Thanks.

indeed i think they mention "press" so matches with your mention of hydraulic press.

i use stock rim.

usual damage due to turning too early hit kerb for a few times  etc , but nothing seriously hard until rim also crushed.  can  the parts at the wheel (not just the ball bearing) withstand these common driving mistakes ?

at about 40k-50k km. car mileage, i had the bearing repaired at borneo. it only pasted to about 70k km. means quality of ball bearing is still not the only causing to the early damage ,  i still worry something else is damaged and causes the wheel noy to spin the way it should ( it may be my imagination but i feel the problem wheel vibrates when I drive )

Hitting kerbs - maybe your wheel is deformed/warped and out of balance, causing additional stress and wear on the bearings.

my Altis has only done 90k km, and now the 3rd set of wheel bearing on the front left tire is starting to make noise again.

a month ago, i noticed the front left tire thread was very worn out and change a new set of tires.

Probably the new tires are more quiet and I hear the wheel bearing noise immediate after the tire change.

the last repair was less than 20k km ago!!  these things are suppose to last long enough for our 10yr COE in most cases.

I believe changing the wheel bearing is not solving the root , and the bearing will fail again in next 20k km.

what else could be the cause and cost to repair?

You already mentioned. You front left tire thread very worn.

What it takes for the whole thing to work properly is the turning shaft need to be ok, next is some say the bearing hub, I would as bearing. Then fit the wheels. Bearing alignment and wheel alignment has to be ok too. How about your drive shaft alignment? Drive shaft might be causing the wheels to no go straight even if wheels are align. It may affect too.

What I can conclude is your bearing is suffering from some forces (at certain direction) from the above that is causing it to breakdown. You need to go to someone you trust to confirm all the above. Rolling issues, alignmnet issues, direction issues, all can break the bearing. For easy of troubleshooting, I suggest you start from the inner most all the way to outside which is wheels and wheels balancing last

I think he is referring to the wheel hub for the bearing , not the housing(rongs) for the balls.

I am referring to the the wheel hub. Not the bearing housing.

Go for proper (laser) alighment first... make sure camber and toe all follow manufacturer recommendations.

Maybe can also check your lower arm... that one just 1 piece of stamp steel may have been slightly deformed so change some of the angle/position causing more stress on the bearings.

Anyway it is a long and very difficult process to troubleshoot. But yes altis bearings should be bullet proof for many many years

Hitting the kerb a few times caused the front left assembly to be bent out of shape.

This is why the tyre and the bearing got abnormal wear.

Find the part that is bent out of shape and replace it.

The bearing should come together with the hub assembly itself.

Depend on the design.

Alot of jap car front bearing. Even if u buy original.  U still need to perform the press out/in step.

Maybe the mechanic mangled the hub? Buy a new hub and bearing together.

good one 👍

that's what I thought too

You are feeling rich? Why do it at BM?

Here in mcf got the Toyota parts sponsors. You just give them a call but must get your e-logcard ready as they will ask for chassis number. After purchasing the original part go to your regular workshop and get them to replace.

it was during warranty.

after warranty, i went outside workshop. but problem persists.

yep, simple things like wipers, air filters i go to stockists on online and DIY (DIM to be precise 🙂 ).

Actually with some older design..

( the bearing hub got a small cap. Some time by accident the mech make a small hole  on the cap  and water drip in)

The new altis design should not happen. But if by accident water slip in, bearing spoil super fast.

The next time u go replace. Can ask if the the old bearing got rust. Ask them check . Etc

Frankly I have not come across shops in Singapore doing  proper grease packing on axle taper roller bearings. Failure to do a proper grease packing job only result in premature bearing failure. To know more about axle  roller bearing grease packing procedure , google youtube

Another very important task when installing the grease packed roller bearing into the axle is to do pre-loading ( that is to tighten the bearing nut to the require torque so that the bearing rollers are in perfect contact with outer bearing casing and there is minimum free-play when the wheel is assembled into position).

Some things go back to AD is good, some may not. If you need their expertise, go to them, if not outside got many good WS.

thank you everyone for your advices.

going through all posts I figure the below

  • wheel alignment
  • check lower arm
  • check turning shaft
  • change bearing and bub

are there workshops that can (and will) do all? i mean, if I go comfortdelgro to do wheel alignment, then another workshop to check the arm / shaft, it costs a lot of time... in MCF/internet I see a handle of 'toyota specialist workshops' . Any clue if these workshops (or any wheel (?) workshop) can do all of the above (I am ok even if it means they send my car to their neighboring workshop with the required machines to do wheel alignment, for example, at least saves taking a day off and run around)

Go to those places like Sin Ming,Kaki Bukit or Ang Mo Kio,Autopoint, the whole Cluster are Workshops, sure have everything under 1 Roof.

For those who talk about greasing bearings, please go and readup or watch videos on how it is actually done for modern cars with bolted in bearings.

There is no where to grease lah, and certainly you will not see the exposed rollers or balls🤦‍♂️
