Fiat124sport Neutral Newbie October 11, 2005 Share October 11, 2005 current owner of a Korean car, thinking of changing to a conti car. Considering between a VW - polo and Fiat - Punto. Test drive both cars today. I like the Fiat Punto when it is on manual mode. When it is on auto - it is not as smooth as the VW - POLO. However, I am leaning towards to Punto for the fuel economy (if it is really true as stated on paper). How is your Punto performing? I am worried about cost of spare parts and workshop support. You know, after hearing so many things about Fiat....... I would like to get some opinion from a current fiat owner. Well, I was told to expect to pay abt 10% - 15% more on the parts. How reliable is a fiat? I travel to KL on business trip nearly every month and a reliable and safe car is my consideration. My current Hyundai Accent 1.5M is my second accent and I must say it has served me well. I dun want to be seen squatting along the N-S highway waiting for a tow truck? Need to come up with a decision soon...... Hi there, Forget the stories you hear out there about Fiat, it simply is not true. This is my second punto, if it is unreliable, I wouldn't have bought myself more trouble would I? I have not driven the new Polo before, so I can't comment on it. My Punto is running fine so far. Petrol consumption is at 13.5km per litre - but that's because the car isn't fully run in yet, and add to the fact that I am running on 15 inch rims(GULP )with 195 section tyres on a little 1.2!!!! Stick with the OEM 14 inchers and you should see fantastic fuel consumption figures. Local garages that handle continental cars should be able to handle the Punto. Spare parts expensive? Total nonsense. From experience, parts for some Jap cars can be equally expensive! To be safe, just bring it back to TTS should any problem arise. Look forward to seeing you in a Punto soon!! Hey bro! Sorry couldn't meet up with you guys the last time, work has been freaking hectic lately[sweatdrop] Anyways, any difference after volt stab and grounding? Felipe 3rd Gear October 11, 2005 Share October 11, 2005 fiat is a low maintenance car. if not, the insurance wouldn't be so cheap. if worry abt price of spares, the only component i can think of thats costly is gearbox failure. but that can happen to any auto car after sometime. at the curent HGT price, i think its the best bang for the buck. plus it comes in manual. Mona_goh Neutral Newbie October 11, 2005 Share October 11, 2005 Hi Felipe, Thanks 4 the info. My cousin is currently driving a 8-year old fiat punto - auto. He was bothered by the gear transmission problem initially but now is rectified. And he also had a fuel leakage problem - some valves under the back seat did not work well. But now, the car is okay and gives no problem. I am leaning towards the fiat punto more. I thought since the dualgear is in the market for 6 years already, the teething problems would have been resolved by now. Felipe 3rd Gear October 11, 2005 Share October 11, 2005 the version sold here is not dualgear i think. dualgear (sounds like dualogic to me) is a selespeed type transmission and clutchless manual. the version here is a CVT sequential 6speed.& as u noe, CVTs are really very smooth, not to my liking though. i almost bought the punto, but changed my mind after testing & finding CVTs arent my cup of tea. Switching from a manual to a CVT sure takes some getting used too The revs don't climb but the speed sure does!! thankfully the speed limit warning function is there to constantly keep me in check! Mona_goh Neutral Newbie October 12, 2005 Share October 12, 2005 oops now you know I am such a 'car idiot' you are right, the version I test drove is the CVT sequential speedgear - well, kind of like it - quite fun to drive. I am never an auto driver, have been driving manual since I got my licence. The Fiat Punto will give me the options of driving on manual (clutchless - that's why I like it). One of the reason why I chose fiat punto is of the fuel economy - if it is really what it claimed on paper, it is more fuel efficient than my current hyundai accent (clocking about 12km /l for combined). You know, fuel price is getting higher and being a "typical auntie", always looking for corners to cut. Wanted a conti car and yet looking for fuel economy...... Felipe 3rd Gear October 12, 2005 Share October 12, 2005 just my opinion, u may seriously wana consider the HGT since uve always been manual driver. its a lot more powerful and its at 60k+ which is reasonable. but of cos, FC wun be as good. but dun forget, a manual gearbox is fuss free to maintain, which is wat i like. also, it looks more striking than an ignis sport for instance with better top speed. if ure really getin the punto cvt, maybe ask the SE to throw in 15 rims as fiat rims are hard to get. Hmm.....when I went for my first rotation of tires for my Aveo at 5k, my regular tire shop man already found uneven wear and advised me to bring it back to SA for an alignment check.
