  3. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/premium/forum-...ia-moh-20130326 Brain-death diagnosis based on stringent clinical criteria: MOH Published on Mar 26, 2013 THE Sunday Times reported on the case of Ms Suzanne Chin, who recovered from a coma ("Back from the dead: 'I have been blessed with a second chance'"; Sunday). We are happy that Ms Chin has made a recovery. However, we are not able to comment on the case as we do not have access to specific information on her medical treatment in Hong Kong and what exactly was diagnosed and communicated to her family. Brain death is diagnosed only when there is catastrophic brain injury. When brain death has occurred, blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain ceases irreversibly and all brain functions are lost and will never return again. Brain death is determined according to strict clinical criteria. Once diagnosed, it is recognised both medically and legally in Singapore as death of the person. This definition is similar to those used in countries such as Australia, Canada, Denmark, Britain and the United States. Brain death implies the irreversible cessation of consciousness, loss of capacity to breathe and other brain stem functions, and is accepted as the termination of a human's life; correspondingly, the diagnosis of brain death is very important. The neurological criteria for diagnosing brain death in Singapore are based on current best medical evidence and knowledge, and are similar to those adopted by countries such as the US, Australia, and Britain. In Singapore, all criteria have to be fully met for the diagnosis of brain death, including absence of pupillary response to light, absence of corneal reflex and absence of respiratory drive or spontaneous breathing, to cite a few; and when one or more of these tests cannot be done, additional tests to demonstrate the absence of brain circulation need to be performed. In addition, two doctors are required to certify brain death, at least one of whom has to be independent and not involved in the care of the patient. Doctors accredited to perform brain-death certification in our hospitals are specialists who have had appropriate training to certify brain death. We would like to reassure the public of the highest standard of medical practice in our hospitals, and that correctly diagnosed brain death is not a reversible medical condition. 5. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_697331.html Mindef should spell out NS deferment criteria DR PATRICK Tan's deferment of his national service (NS) for 12 years ('Patrick Tan on his medical studies'; last Saturday) brings to mind the stories of many other talented Singaporeans who were not allowed to defer their NS. Some are talented musicians, sportsmen or artists who have qualified for prestigious schools or have trained hard enough to don national colours for competitions. The Ministry of Defence's (Mindef) stock reply is that national servicemen are granted deferment only in rare and exceptional cases. After reading Dr Tan's clarification, I cannot help but ask what the thus far unspecified criteria are that would allow for discretionary deferment. Dr Tan's case suggests to me that budding musicians, artists or sportsmen are deemed less important than future doctors or scientists. If Singapore is to be vibrant and enriching, talented citizens in any field should be supported. What are the necessary conditions for deferment? Mindef's transparency will set the record straight and help in future appeals. Lim Guay Cheng (Ms)
  6. need inputs from bros and sis here..... what it takes to become one?? -where to study -whom do we approach for help if interested to take up as a career? Thks
  7. When choosing a car, do you slam the doors shut to test their feel and quality? I think a solid "choomp" makes you feel real good compared to one that does a hollow "pang" isn't it? Interested to know which sub $60k cars gives a good solid feel when closing the doors? (Aveo, Cruze, Avante, Getz, Forte, Lancer, Sunny, Impreza, Swift........ just to name a few)
  8. I have some questions which i hope some pros can advise, I been searching around past few days for a new car. My current ride is nissan sunny which i will not be renewing the roadtax and insurance due on 18th Aug. I be selling away due to sunny has really has bad fuel consumption, i can tahan 4 years... already sibey gd le.. 325/39 litres. Next is a headache. My CO likes the avante due to cheap and looks quite nice. she do not mind me buying 2litre 1 but overall i still prefer the lancer ex due to its my fav car, but its $15000 difference. I was quoted Lancer Ex 2010 sport edition at $69988 while avante with S/R is $54599... Lancer was with free 3 years service and avante is without. The pro and cons i guess its common. Looks versus budget. The problem is i don't want to buy and regard i scared the lancer ex is also a drinker because of its 1250weight and only using 1.5 engine. So if you were me what will you go for? My first choice is still a Honda Civic but its too overpriced which is kinda sad. I have a budget of 30000 upfront and the rest on 7 year loan which i cannot fork out more then $600 (budget set by CO) so is these 2 car only choice??? I avoid toyota because i had very bad experience with toyota before. therefore is there any other car which is my price range and highly recommend? Or should i get a 2nd hand civic that also came to my mind. I also need to act fast as Aug 18 is due soon. 1 More question is if i already paid 3 months in advanced for my season parking can i cancel and will hdb refund the balance?
  9. What is the criteria companies use when deciding who to retrench? Is it performance? age? salary? seniority? attitude? FT? ball carrying? tikam tikam?
  10. the housing market is managed by hdb. and they can rent the 1 room flats to you or not is up to them. although they are building more rental flats, and stopping retirees from selling their 3 or 4 or 5 rooms to downgrade, is it fair? i mean the retiree may be single and old, he may have zero income, so why is he not allowed to sell and rent but instead must use the reverse mortage? if he sell, he will increase the resale market supply of 4 or 5 room hdb resale flats. and he only needs 1 room for himself to stay, let growing families take the 4 or 5 room flats. if he takes the reverse mortage, he will not get the full amount back and he gets it in small installments. plus he needs to top up the cpf first before he can draw down. where is the logic?
