  1. CNA : Recent spike in bacterial infection cases: Authorities probing link to raw fish SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Health and various agencies are investigating the increase in cases of Group B streptococcus (GBS) infection, which have been linked with the consumption of raw fish, the ministry said on Monday (Jul 13). One of the larger hospitals in Singapore saw an average of about 53 cases of GBS infection each year in the past five years, with a range of 31 to 73 cases a year. However, it has treated about 76 cases so far this year and in 10 of these cases, recent consumption of raw fish was reported, MOH said in reply to queries by Channel NewsAsia. "Investigations are ongoing as to the reason(s) for the increase in cases," the ministry added. Earlier on Monday, MOH said it was aware of a message circulating claiming there has been an outbreak of GBS due to consumption of contaminated raw fish. The message said all the people who had taken ill had consumed "yusheng", a popular dish at hawker centres, where raw fish is marinated in sesame oil and garnished with red chilli and ginger. link : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/recent-spike-in-bacterial/1982524.html
  2. Car buyers can start planning their purchases next year. Let's just hope the loan rule still applies, just to dampen the demand a little. http://m.sgcarmart.com/articles/articleinfo.php?CT=n&AID=11131 With a maximum of about 52,000 cars, which can be deregistered between now and mid-2015, dealers are preparing for a big spike in Certificate of Entitlement (COE) supply within the next year, reported The Business Times. Deregistrations are the main component in determining each new COE quota and over the past four years, the number of cars scrapped has been low. This, and a lower allowable vehicle growth rate and COE clawbacks due to previous oversupply, have put a squeeze on COEs. As a result, the number of private passenger cars registered in 2013 was just 22,008 units, while only 27,000-plus new cars were put on the roads in each of the preceding two years. The director of a volume dealership quipped, "Compared to those lean years, 2015 will have at least 50 percent more car COEs, if not 75 percent more.'' The situation looks even rosier beyond that. According to the Land Transport Authority, from mid-2015 to mid-2016, a maximum of 107,000 cars are due for deregistration, or double the preceding period's figure. And this pool remains about the same size for the following 12-month period from mid-2016 to mid-2017. So it is no surprise that many distributors are ramping up operations. The Mitsubishi brand, for example, is returning to Cycle & Carriage's Alexandra Road showroom. Some brands are expanding their model lineup. For Opel and Chevrolet, distributor Alpine Motors is bringing in two new models each. The four cars will be Alpine's first new model launches in two years. But others may be more cautious about over-extending themselves. Over at Borneo Motors Singapore, the authorised Toyota distributor is said to be streamlining its Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) operations and securing new facilities to handle the expected rise in sales. But it appears investment in other areas may take place only when the actual boom materialises.
  3. A spike barrier is a security control measure to prevent perpetrators from using vehicles to dash through the Checkpoint. It can cause severe damage even to heavy vehicles. According to the Stomper, her friend was then told to file a claim against the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). However, no assistance was given to the driver nor was he advised on how to proceed. Hence, he is now at a loss as to what to do. Jen, a Claims Officer, said her friend had related the incident to her. She told Stomp: "My friend was exiting Woodlands Checkpoint on Feb 20. Suddenly, the 'Cat Crawler' was deployed without any reason and caused damage to his vehicle. "He was at the ICA office for few hours after that, and all he got was his vehicle towed away and being told to make a claim against ICA. "But there was no indication of who to approach and how the procedure to make a claim should be like. No one was there to advise him. "We call up ICA and referred to a Woodlands Checkpoint officer, who could not even give us a clear direction. She replied that she was not sure as well." Jen added that they are still waiting for ICA's response and as such, the car is still damaged.
