  2. Living with stage 4 cancer: a father and daughter’s story Just received this today, and was very touched and inspired by this true story. Above is the excerpt. If you have 20 min to spare, it's a very inspiring and touching read of how a younge man's world (almost) collapsed on him during his prime, but battled back to overcome the illness, and live his live - differently from what he originally intended but still a journey that he cherished. Now recovered and successful, he's living a full life now. Click the link above to read the whole article. Thought this worth sharing with all here. In particular, those who are fighting similar illness, or if you know anyone in that situation, can take inspiration from this. @Lala81

  4. watched this movie in plane to seoul. true story about navy seals in Afghanistan, trying to capture a certain taliban leader in a village. Ops Code name 'Operations Red Wing'. it was a failed mission with n many deaths. the mistake was the recon seals team captured few shepherds near the taliban village, and they debated on whether to release the shepherds or silenced them. just one old man and two teenage kids. the mistake was they released them. they can't kill them coz they are unharmed. one of the teenaged kids ran and told the talibans abt the navy seals. they hunted them down. couple of things impressed me so much abt the Seals. the team leader sacrificed himself, in order to get satellite signals and comm to the base camp, by climbing to the highest level, while exposing himself to enemy fire. secondly, one team member told another, "tell cindy (his wife) and he loves her so much, and don't feel too sad for him coz he dies with his BROTHERS'. I really teared when he said this. they deserved every respect
  5. Was listening to the radio, Class95 this morning and they were talking abt this survivor of the jet crashed in 2007. http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/front/arch...5/12/2003360493 Fighter crash kills crew, Singaporeans FLIGHT MISHAP An air force fighter plunged into a building housing military personnel from Singapore, killing a total of four people and injuring several others, some severely By Jimmy Chuang / STAFF REPORTER An Air Force fighter jet crashed into a military complex at a base in northern Taiwan yesterday, killing its two crew members and two Singaporean military personnel. Nine Singaporeans were also injured, two critically, when the two-seat F-5F Tiger fighter jet slammed into a building housing the Singaporean personnel, partially destroying the facility and engulfing it in flames. The Air Force confirmed that the F-5F took off from its base in Taitung County at 9am to participate in training for the annual Han Kuang series of military exercises at a base near Hukou Township (湖口), Hsinchu County. Three F-5s were involved in the exercise, but none of the pilots onboard the other aircraft witnessed the accident, because the jet that crashed was at the rear of the formation. As the jet finished its final run and prepared to return to its base, it suddenly lost control and crashed. Several eyewitnesses said they saw the jet fly by before crashing. The plane appeared to be heading toward factories and residential areas, but the pilots seemed to have attempted to avoid them and turned the aircraft toward a military complex nearby, eyewitnesses said. The plane exploded into a ball of fire on impact, instantly killing the 34-year-old pilot, Major Wei Tsu-yuan (魏子淵) and his co-pilot, 27-year-old Captain Chan Chia-chun (詹嘉鈞). Minister of National Defense Lee Jye (李傑) immediately grounded the Air Force's remaining 34 F-5s after the crash, but said that the Han Kuang exercises would continue. cause unknown "We need time to determine the cause of the crash," Lee said. "We have retrieved the aircraft's flight-data recorder and will examine it as soon as possible." "Meanwhile, the military exercises will continue, although we have grounded our remaining F-5 series of fighters for further examinations," he said. When the F-5F crashed into the military complex, it also killed two foreign military personnel and wounded nine on the ground. All of the ground personnel belong to the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). SAF personnel have been training in Taiwan under the "Starlight Program," a military cooperation agreement between Taiwan and Singapore. Singapore has operated three military training camps in Taiwan since 1975: in Hengchun Township (恆春), Pingtung County; Douliu Township (斗六), Yunlin County; and Hukou Township in Hsinchu County. Each year, Singapore would send approximately 15,000 SAF personnel to Taiwan for training. In the past few years, however, only about 7,000 SAF personnel have continued training here as Singapore has begun to focus on closer ties with China. "Two wounded patients are in critical condition," said Dr. Chen Tim-mo (陳天牧), chief plastic surgeon at the Tri-Services General Hospital. "Both of them suffered serious burns." "One of the patients has burns over 50 percent of his body," Chen said. "The other has burns over 40 percent. The patient with 50 percent burns is in a coma, while we induced sleep in the other, so he would not feel so much pain." The Ministry of National Defense (MND) refused to release the names of the Singaporean military personnel, citing the confidential nature of the Starlight Program and the sensitive relationship between Taiwan and Singapore. Ministry of National Defense Spokesman Rear Admiral Wu Chi-fang (吳季方) also refused to comment on the Singaporean personnel when questioned by reporters. The Singaporean Ministry of Defense issued a brief statement yesterday confirming that two SAF personnel were dead, two were seriously injured and seven others were injured. It said it would be investigating the incident. Local firefighters only confirmed that "at least three heads and many body parts" were discovered at the crash site and sent to the hospital, but said that none of bodies were identifiable. "We lost two pilots. Singaporean troops also lost two, while another two are in the hospital," Lee said. Lawmakers were quick to interpret the crash through a political lens. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Hsueh Ling (薛凌) told a press conference that senior MND officials should step down to take responsibility for the accident. Saying that such a crash was a "terrible" loss of human life, Hsueh urged the MND to stop all exercises immediately. Hsueh said "some soldiers" had complained to her before that the military insisted on conducting exercises despite the military's "outdated" equipment, saying that Lee should therefore assume responsibility. Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Lin Yu-fang (林郁方) said that Lee should bear responsibility for the accident. "Accidents happen too often, and that has to do with the government's paying too little attention to the task of training pilots and to mechanical maintenance," Lin said. Lin said that the DPP government should focus more on maintenance and less on pushing the legislature to buy expensive new weapons. Additional reporting by Flora Wang,Shih Hsiu-chuan and Angelica Oung The survivor : Man gets prestigious scholarship, 6 years after brush with death SINGAPORE — Mr Karthigayan Ramakrishnan barely escaped with his life when a Taiwanese fighter jet crashed into the storeroom that he was in during National Service training on that island six years ago. Burns covered 45 per cent of his body and he spent almost 60 days in hospital, “walking the line” between life and death. Yesterday, in a clear testimony to how far he has recovered, the 29-yearold was among five Singaporeans awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship by the United Kingdom government. Known previously in Singapore as the Raffles Scholarships, the programme offers bondfree scholarships to promising young Singaporeans. Mr Karthigayan, who will be the very first Chevening-British Alumni scholar, said the scholarship came as “a real boost”. “It will drive me to do even better,” he added. The scholarship, funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, will help to pay for his master’s degree in public policy at Sheffield University. Explaining his choice of study, Mr Karthigayan, a sociology graduate from UniSIM, said: “When I was doing sociology, I realised that it is public policy and governance that affects every part of daily life … If you want to be part of the change, you have to be part of (it).” Mr Karthigayan, who is currently a senior executive of student affairs at NUS’ Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, has also been working actively to inspire other burn victims through the Singapore General Hospital’s burns support team. “When you are a burn victim, your features change. Sometimes there is skin discolouration or celluloid, but when we meet each other, we reinforce to one another that life goes on. The kind of message we want to give is to accept it first. Coping happens later,” he said. Indeed, Mr Karthigayan’s recovery from the May 2007 crash, which killed three Singaporean soldiers and two Taiwanese pilots, has been fraught with much pain and difficulty, although it has influenced the way he views life. “The accident reinforced one thing for me, that life was fragile. There is only this limited time that I have to do what I want to do ... So that’s what I keep telling myself every day — to make the best out of everything,” said Mr Karthigayan, who got married earlier this year. 2806_AP_page_30.pdf

  7. Bishan double tragedy: jumper "appeared normal" Posted: 15 September 2011 1600 hrs SINGAPORE: Forty-eight-year-old Ng Sock Luan, who jumped from a height at a Bishan apartment block early this year and landed on another woman, was known to have had a history of harbouring suicidal thoughts. Coroner's inquest into her death however revealed that she appeared normal and did not seem to be in any form of distress just hours before her fatal leap on January 10. Her 21-year-old daughter noticed that the administrative assistant had changed into her work attire and seemed to be preparing to go to work at around 7.30am that day. Madam Ng, who was diagnosed with anxiety-depression, had told her loved ones on several occasions that she wanted to commit suicide. As a result of this, her family members had never left her alone since December last year. But she decided to jump from Block 179 Bishan Street 13 at around 11am on the one day they left her alone. Madam Ng landed on 54-year-old Lau Fong Kien who happened to be walking at the ground floor near the block of flats, killing herself and the older woman. State Coroner Imran Abdul Hamid said Ms Lau was a breast cancer survivor with a strong desire to live having beaten the cancer two years ago. He said that she was a "tragic victim" in the incident and did not see Ms Lau as someone with suicidal tendencies. But Coroner Imran said that Madam Ng was the "exact opposite" and her "balance of mind was disturbed" when she decided to make the fatal fall. Both women succumbed to multiple injuries. State Counsel Agnes Chan pointed out that injuries suffered by Madam Ng were consistent with a fall from height. Ms Chan also told the court that Ms Lau's injuries were similar to those sustained by individuals hit by falling objects. Paramedics who arrived at the scene pronounced both women dead within minutes of each other. - CNA/ck
  8. Mr. Mendoza was already upset even before he saw on television what the policemen did to his brother. The other tourists who remained inside the bus were complaining. Wei Ji Jiang wanted to go to the bathroom.Dao Chi Yu was hungry and the rest were just groaning and whining like they have forgotten that our lives rest in Mr. Mendoza's hands. The hostage taker, as you know him was really nice. He treated us okay and even let the elders and the children leave the bus. He said your policemen treated him unfairly. He was a policeman too and was accused of doing something he had no knowledge of. But your government didn'tlisten so he used us to get everyone's attention. Things would havenever turned for the worst if he didn't see how his family was dragged out of their house and taken into custody. He was watching the news all the time as we huddled around each other behind the bus. He shouted some words in your language then started shooting in the air. A girl about my age started screaming. Mr. Mendoza demanded her to stop but she didn't understand English. God, he had to slash her neck with a knife just to put her to rest. Her boyfriend who tried to hit him was shot in the head. Tension was rising. You can see in his face how scared and confused he was. The bus driver ran away leaving him alone with strangers from a distant land. I can see him walking across the aisle, sometimes pointing his machine gun to one of the tourists. But he tried his best not to hurt us, especially those who really cooperate. I guess its in your nature not to inflict pain on others unless it was necessary. I remember him saying that he will free us before sundown and implored us to forget everything when we return home. But his words don't matter now. The policemen were trying to force their way in, while we all lied down to shield ourselves from bullets. Mister Mendoza blindly shoots at his enemies which I thinkkept them from rescuing us. I hear sobs under the chairs. Some were even shouting the names of their loved ones even when the air merely eat their words. Kevin Tang tried to escape when the glass door was was shattered, but one shot and he slumped on the floor with blood gushing from his mouth. Heavy rain pitter-pattered on the rooftop. In old Chinese saying, it means an end to a struggle. Finally, somebody wa sable to open the escape hatch at the back of the bus. Freedom. But I knew Mister Mendoza was still alive. I knew he was just waiting for a chance to strike back at his enemies. So I told those around me not to escape. Let the authorities come for us instead. Then there was gunfire. He was firing at his enemies with a machine gun. Those who were at the escape hatch fled abandoning us once again. It's like a nightmare with no end and to wake up means a certain death. Then somebody from outside the bus threw a canister. It forced out a black smoke that is so painful to the eyes and putrid smelling to the nose.People started screaming. We cannot breathe. Some ran in front of the bus but Mister Mendoza warned them of stray bullets. It was too late. One was hit on the head, the other was hit on the shoulders. Bullets were now flying. Its like the authorities thought we were all dead.Mister Mendoza finally admits his mistake and said sorry to everyone, dead or alive. He then ran towards the front of the bus where he would meet his maker. As he passed by my chair with bullets whistling overhead, I clutched my hand on the velvet curtain and wrapped it around my face. All I could think of was to stay alive - for my child who is waiting for me back in Xinjang. I know I will survive, I willcome home.
