Next door to Novotel and The Straits is a row of shophouse where chicken rice ball, indian coffeeshop, etc... food. There got one modern provision shop liao. Setup like 7-11 store. No need ask bellboy.

I know the area well lah.

It is for ppl who don't know about that place.

May i ask if you guys drive around malacca or park in the hotel and travel around on foot or by taxi?

How is the parking at jonker street and other tourist hotspots? roadside free parking?

Driven to Malacca about 4 times past few months.

Usually parked car in hotels like Estadia, Hatten, Straits Hotel & Suites & Novotel.

Taken Estadia shuttle bus to Jonker & walked back.

If I drive out to Jonker, will park in areas manned by private operators in unpaved open air carparks marked on maps below. Pay by cash on the spot, per entry, abt RM4-5, depending on the day of the week. Less than 50m walk to the weekend night market/foodstalls.

Couldn't use google guide or GPS; as the routes provided by them have too many turns & small roads & possible traffic congestions.

Discovered this route myself by trial & error.

At junction where there's a prominent building ' Public Bank' signage, turn Right, go straight.

Then turn Left into Jln Kubu. Have to turn left anyway becos it's a oncoming one way beyond this.

After this, take Left fork. Go straight & turn Right towards Hallmark Hotel.

No more turning until u see carpark signs.

Happy exploring !

Just take Grab car to Jonker area. Only RM 8 per trip. No need worry about parking in open or unguarded public area. I rather leave car in secured hotel car park.

BTW, I found someone on another Forum page selling OneXOX Prepaid SIM Card. Special thing about this card is the long validity of 28 months unlike the usual 50 days or do. At least for this card, when you top up value, chances are the value will not expire as likely readers of this thread will make at least  1 trip to Malaysia once every 2 years.

I find this extremely convenient as I use it to Google stuff when I'm outside and also the traffic situation (www.causewayjam.com) at both Immigration checkpoints before deciding which one to take. Per Day data usage is only RM3 for 150MB of data. More than enough for simple and basic use.

Depending on where you are staying and whether you can walk or not.

I stayed at Equatorial, Fenix Inn, The Straits Hotel and parked my car upon check in and never drive around.  I walk (including my 2 young kids) to Jonker Street and tourist attractions (Christ church Malacca, Taming Sari Tower, Cheng Hoon Teng temple, Ductch Square and St Paul ruins.

Just back from my 2nd trip to Melaka in 3 months and happy to share some notes :

Straits Hotel

Having stayed at Novetel last time, decided to try Straits Hotel since they share the same car park and great location. Booked 2 rooms for family and received one free upgrade to Suite whilst other room was as booked. Although the additional space was nice, I prefer Novotel for its ambience and room fittings. Straits felt more like apartment with its wooden flooring and a price list of the items in the room. Very local style listing for deterrence and you don't find this at the international chains. Still, it was a clean and safe hotel .

Daily Fix Cafe

We planned to return to Sun Hiong May Satay but sadly shop was closed for 2 days. As it was a Saturday and super crowded, decided to check in to hotel first and take a Grab car to avoid the jam and parking.. Short journey took almost 30 minutes and that was without even looking for car park. That rant aside, we were very glad we came by this cafe. The Pandan Pancake with dash of gula melaka and a small bowl of coconut gratings soaked in gula melaka was heavenly. We also had the carbonara and it was nice too.

Tong Sheng

Dinner was at Tong Sheng and enough has been written about the Cheese Bee Hoon. Do try the crispy honey pork as it was nice complement to the bee hoon and other seafood stuff. Outstanding memory of this visit was the long queue even at 9pm. Waited for close to an hour and finally got a table for 4 at 10pm. Worth the wait and so glad we did as when we drove past the next day (Sunday), shop was closed. So if we didn't queue that night, we would have missed it .

Eggtra

Was googling for some nice breakfast places and came across mixed reviews. . Whilst they served the standard American breakfast fare, it tasted great and we were glad we came. What's unique about the A B/F here was instead of a fixed order of eggs, baked beaks, tomatoe, bacon, ham etc, here you can choose your individual. items. 3, 5 or 7 items to mix and match what you really want instead of being served stuff you don't like. Simple but brilliant concept !

In my case, its always a waste of baked beans and tomatoes as I don't like them. What would have taken it up a notch would have been the use of pork bacon and ham instead of beef bacon and chicken ham, But wanting to cater to a bigger catchment, we can understand the reason. Will come by again on my next trip.

Hard Rock Cafe

Usual HRC fare and band was mediocre. Nothing much more to add

Grab Car

Took a total of 4 trips and fare ranged from RM4 to RM8 each way depending on time, Felt fare was way too low, especially for the long jams and wait heading to Jonker area, Paid all of them RM10 each and even then, it was great value for money without having to be caught in jams and looking for parking.

All in all, another wonderful trip to Melaka and whilst we didn't get to do all the things and eat the stuff we wanted, probably gives us another reason to head up again soon  [:p]

Told me wife about hiring grab car but she dont really trust a private car ferrying us, so we paid for taxi. 4 trips as well, rm15 both to and fro for the 1st day and rm20 both for the 2nd day... Last trip was by a tattered proton saga without aircon and hell of a driver cutting here and there. My next trip definitely would be a grab car

:a-m1212::a-m1212::a-m1212: .. i'll be there this weekend.

I am starting to think u have a 2nd hse there

With Grab, user can see feedback about driver unlike taxi.

Nowadays, it is safer to use Grab/Uber in MY then taxi.
