TVT Supercharged May 22, 2015 Share May 22, 2015 BEIJING (AFP) - A man stabbed three children and a teacher to death and wounded several others on Monday in a rampage at a Chinese primary school that refused to enrol his daughter, state media said. The attacker killed himself by jumping from the building following the carnage at a school in Shiyan in the central province of Hubei, according to the official Xinhua news agency. Five other students have been hospitalised, one of them seriously injured, Xinhua said. A female teacher, surnamed Liu, was stabbed in the chest and stomach and died of her injuries hours later, Xinhua said. The attacker, named as 43-year-old Chen Yanfu, "jumped to death from the fifth floor after he was tackled by a teacher", according to Xinhua. Why attack the children? They got nothing to do with this... Really sad. ↡ Advertisement
WilliamY 4th Gear May 22, 2015 Share May 22, 2015 (edited) This is my personal take on this issue based on personal experience and observation. It is important to go to a good school but how to define a good school. My take is a good school is one that instils the right values into your child and provide room for your child to grow as a human being and at the same time "pushes" your child to explore his or her limits. Every child is different and that is why we have many different type of adults as exemplify by the varied MCF members with distinguish jobs ranging from professional (table wiper) to boss's of their own company. You throw an average child into a top academic school, he or she will be demoralized if he or she is not strong. While in his kindergarten in his neighbourhood kindergartern he was the top student and envy of every mother. But thrown into a top academic school he is ranked maybe at the lower half of the list. Basically, his or her confidence may suffer. I strongly belief that if a child has learnt his or her right values and build a good character, it is these that will guide him or her to know what is right and wrong, what are priorities and what are not, what are important and what are not, EQ and many more. Even if he does not become the CEO of Temasek Holdings, he or she will still be doing well and a well rounded life. There are many parents out there, whose selflessness of pushing their children to do well in education, ultimately destroy their relationship with their children. Is it worth it? Is this the reason why we have kids? Anecdotal, I have seen many children from neighbourhood schools becoming lawyers, doctors, professors and even ministers. Going to an elite school, doesn't guarantee anything but may on the other hand make your child more materialistic and lack of empathy. I have friends who have children study in elite schools, their kids are like this, they don't know the value of money because what they ask they get, they complain because their classmate went to Kenya for Safari holiday and so their parents up man ship must also go, then when they look at poor people around the kids condemn them and say they are lazy and ask them to get a life. Of course, there are some who would do well. The point is, whether, neighbourhood or elite school, should not be chosen because of peer pressure, social pressure, ego pressure, kiasu pressure or even "innocently" wanting the best for the kid. If you truly wanting the best for kid, then choose the type of school through the "eyes" of your kids and not through your own eyes. Education is important but living a meaningful, happy, responsible life and making education just a part of one's life is even more important. RadX Moderator May 25, 2015 Share May 25, 2015 Hmmm...this measure might add to property rental prices inch up hahhaaha P1 registration: Child must live at declared address for at least 30 months from July 2, 2015 PUBLISHED ON MAY 25, 2015 10:57 AM PRINTEMAIL Children who have secured places in primary schools under the home-school distance priority will be required to stay at the address for at least 30 months from the start of the Primary 1 registration exercise on July 2, 2015. -- PHOTO: ST FILE BY AMELIA TENG SINGAPORE - Children who have secured places in primary schools under the home-school distance priority scheme will be required to live at the address for at least 30 months from the start of the Primary 1 registration exercise on July 2. This new rule applies to children entering primary school next year. Previously there was no specific length of time set by the Ministry of Education (MOE). The ministry said on its website: "A child who gains priority admission into a school through his/her distance category is required to reside at the address used for registration for at least 30 months from the commencement of the P1 registration exercise on 2 July 2015." The ministry said that there are a small number of cases where families are unable to remain at the registered address for the entire duration of their children's primary school studies. Even so, a child who gains priority admission into school by distance must still abide by the new rule, it said. "If this condition is not met, MOE reserves the right to transfer the child to another school with vacancies, as the priority admission to the first school was based on the declared address used for registration," the ministry said. "The home-school distance category priority is given with the expectation that the family will reside at the address for the duration of the child's primary school studies, as it is for the convenience and interest of the child," it added. For families which have bought a yet-to-be completed property and plan to move in after it is completed, they are required to live at the new address for at least 30 months starting from the time the family moves into the property. "For example, if the child registers in 2015 and only moves into the new address in July 2017, the 30 months stay period starts from July 2017," MOE said on its website. In March this year, a father who lied about where he lived to get his daughter into a top primary school was sentenced to two weeks in jail. The 35-year-old self-employed man, who cannot be named to protect his daughter's identity, pleaded guilty in February to giving false information to the school's principal on July 30, 2013. A charge of lying to a police sergeant 10 days earlier to change the address on his identity card was taken into consideration. The man had indicated his address as being within 1km to 2km of the brand-name school, when he registered his daughter under Phase 2C of the Primary 1 registration exercise in 2013. This allowed his daughter to secure a place. His identity card showed the same address, but the man actually lived in Balestier Road, which fell outside the priority radius. The address he provided belonged to his uncle's sister, and had been rented out. His subterfuge came to light when MOE visited the place.

There will be people who rent properties near school so as to PV etc to get into phase 2B.
