Lifting windscreen wipers when parking?

Hi bro,

 

Always see people lifting their front windscreen wipers when parking their cars under hot sun or rain, heard that this will prevent the wipers rubber from sticking to the windscreen.

 

Does this method really work or is there for other reasons?

erm.. what I heard is that if u park too long under the heat & U try to use the wipers if it suddenly rain, they might judder, so its better to lift them up...

 

Its only wat I heard other pple saying hor... Don't know how true it is...

 

But as better to believe it, I always lift up my wipers...

hi bro.... dunno abt that will cost juddering to yr wiper or not..... but it does prevent bigger particular frm settling onto yr wiper if u always park at dusty places.... cost if thats the case.... high chance the windscreen can get scratch if u juz use the wiper without checking.... cheers

I always lift up all the wipers for 2 reasons:

 

1) The extreme heat in the car cabin/windscreen will cause premature hardening of the wiper rubber.

2) Leaves, sand trapped on the windscreen wiper will cause scratches when the wiper is activated.

 

That reminds me of an ex-neighbor, who'll wash his own car, and purposely lift up the driver side wiper, because the blanghar would do that for the cars he wash!

I need to park in a un-sheltered car park at my work place, so I lift up my windscreen wipers...

 

I think by default the wiper blade may not rest perpendicular to the windscreen, the rubber or silicon blade is slanting to one side due to the wiping motion. Therefore if under the heat and over time, the rubber or silicon may "deform" and thereby causing juddering... By lifting up the wiper it gives the rubber or silicon a chance to resume its 'straight' form, thus maintaining its performance. I think this works cos my current set of wipers is with me for more than 2 years and still working ok.

I do that becos my grandma old house car parks got cats and many of them who like to sleep on top of bonnet or roofs bcos of the warmness of the engine. So one way to deter the cat from jumping up is to open up the wiper. When the cat see there is obstacle and something sharp which they might poke themselve if them mis aim, they avoid your vehicle.

 

You may say its stupid but it works. I only find out after seeing paws print on my windscreen and bonnet and some scratches on my bonnet which is caused by the cat holding on when sliding down.

 

Especially those car with short bonnet like honda jazz or honda city. Its more steep, smaller surface area, so when faced with 2 wipers pointing out, cats really avoid them. That is also the reason why cats prefer to climb onto mercs or cabs or bmws. Its not bcos they recognise these luxury car's brand. Its bcos their bonnet is longer and flatter, easier to climb up without sliding down and can sleep on top.
