Run Flat Tyres

Am considering to change tyres for my family's car - but am undecided whether to go with run-flats or regular tyres.

Likely that we will need to head north in the car within the next six months, so it's slanting me more towards RFT. But is that a valid consideration or just get a space saver and throw it into the boot?

Thoughts and ideas for discussion welcome.

To make full use of RFT, your rims are required to have a extended hump at the edge:

The designation is called EH2 or EH2+ (EH stands for Extended Hump).

This special design is to prevent the RFT from slipping off the rim in case of loss of tire pressure.

The corollary is, if your rims are not designed for RFT in the first place, fixing RFT may not be beneficial.

how to tell whether its a EH2 rim?

engraved on to the rim?

Yes, should be stamped on the inner side of the rim.

There is a nail in my run flat tyre, the threaded part, not side wall. I went to the tyre shop and they say cannot mend. RFT cannot mend one, need to buy new. Even internal patch also cannot. He said the internal patch will not stick to RFT rubbers properly. I have not removed the nail, it is still holding air pressure pretty well but the reading is always lower than the other 3 tyres.

Can RFT be able to mend/patch?

As quoted in another thread, even Stamford Tyres do not patch RFT..

Maybe you can use those tyre sealer instead?

It’s a rather obscure fact, because the “common” thinking is that by installing RFT without the correct rims, you’d still reap the benefits of the RFT, which is untrue.

By the way, most tire shops in Singapore are not retailing rims with EH2 or EH2+ designation, so if your car comes with RFT, better hold on to the original rims.

My beemers always on stock RFTs all along. Kenna punctured by nails a few times, happened to a new week old one too. Internal patchings done.

However, if your tyres are old (3 yrs = hardened ) or nearly worn out (40,000km after last change), I'd suggest you change to new ones for safety & peace of mind.

My RFT are less than 2 years old and about 20,000km on them.

just to share my personal opinion.

1st , can runflat tire be patch ?

depending who do ask and who does the repair ?

Premium brand tire manufacturers does allow repair but strictly Internal repair only (only this way you can know at least visually that is no Internal damaged or injury). is very dangerous to run on a injured tire especially at high speed.

Car maker like BMW or PML will tell you NO NO NO , Why ? they can not endorsed any work not done by them, and in their dictionary has no such word Repair only 1 word inside is Replace

2nd , Material and compound between regular and runflat tire are different (but I do not know the actual diff )

3rd , is it truth that runflat tire required rim with EH2 flange? ans is Yes and No .i doubt how many workshop or tire shop knows about this? from i know you can actually  seen visually from the shape of the flange. Original factory equipped you are 100% sure (exclude those locally fitted).

remembered i read an article from Bridgestone they claimed that their runflat tire can be fitted on regular wheel.

4th most workshops do not do internal repair (patch) i believe is they do not want to work more to remove from wheel and also risk of breaking the tire Bead especially your tire is too old like more than 2 years.(anyway changing new tires better MOney and no risk breaking your old tire bead after repaired. external repair like Poking or insert requires force to execute thus could enlarge the hole or tear.

5th are you doubt can EH2 takes regular tire ? Answer is YES 100%

6th , they are some wheels in open market designed and made for runflat tire (look up for wheels from Europe especially) or you can request seller how to see the diff btw regular wheel and wheel designed specially for runflat tires.

Frankly speaking if one put runflat tire on regular rim should not have problem (let me do some research )

your last point, i just recently got a friend driving XF 18' tyres, his dealer run out of his pirelli normal tyres, in the end recommended him to put on RFT mend for 5 series ( exactly same size )

he went for it, still driving happily now, about 3 mth already.

last time i got 1 friend honda civic, car left  year look for used tyres 16'  , in the end dun have left 1 set of 3 series 16 rft tyres, he wack also, complain very bumper only, in the end also use until car scrape.

but i dun know if their rims got ' EH2 flange ' or not [;)]

anw if listen to factory say RFT tyres cannot patch , gg liao, every small hole replace tyres??

of course they will say like that to cover their own back side, and scare driver into replaceing more tyres.

they assume all RFT user are driving big car and got deep pocket.

Main reason why tyre companies discourage repair is because once the run flat tyre get punctured the sidewalls take the weight of the car and pending how long you drive without pressure may compromise the sidewall hence safety may get compromised if repaired.

However if you detect the puncture and pump air quickly enough you can retain your sidewall integrity, either way internal patching it recommended for rft not only because its a better seal but it also allows the tyre shop to inspect the sidewall for any rupture (see below)

I've been driving a patched (twice!) RFT tyre since Sep 2016, 3 months after collecting my new car. Have clocked 43,000 km to date. So far so good. *fingers crossed*

Found a tyre shop willing to do internal patching, South East Tyres. However on removal of tyres, realised i had destroyed my tyres with my type of driving. Too many hard launching from traffic stops. 390Nm on the two front tyres.

Found the nail but the tyre is useless. Lucky they had spare exactly the same take off tyres for me. Just nice, changed both front tyres. The rear tyres are perfectly fine.
