Rtth84 1st Gear October 6, 2009 Share October 6, 2009 Why do I see only Japanese brand sedans being used as learner cars? Must a learner car be a sedan? Since its for learners, why not use a Korean ride which is cheaper? Or a small car that consumes less petrol? ↡ Advertisement

Benarsenal Turbocharged October 6, 2009 Share October 6, 2009 (edited) More reliable I guess, since learner cars get "abused" a lot. And I guess sedans are used because most cars are sedans, so learners can get used to the dimensions of it, when parking etc. Edited October 6, 2009 by Benarsenal
Rtth84 1st Gear October 6, 2009 Author Share October 6, 2009 nope. but why not a Hyundai Avante instead of a Mitsubishi Lancer?
Unfair 3rd Gear October 6, 2009 Share October 6, 2009 These cars are also used as their means of transport. They prefer Jap cars to drive daily or perhaps this says something about the reliability of Kimchi cars.
Albeniz Turbocharged October 6, 2009 Share October 6, 2009 During my father's days as a private driving instructor, he used a Nissan Pulsar 1.0DX (which was a hatchback) as the instruction vehicle. The problem with using a smaller cc car was that there would be a significant power loss when the air-con was turned on. Usually the examiners liked to turn on the air-con when they got into the car, the inexperienced learner would find it difficult to balance/move-off on a slope. Hence, mid-size sedans are typically used to ensure reasonable passing rate.

It's actually about perceived reliability

Rtth84 1st Gear October 6, 2009 Author Share October 6, 2009 since the cars are to be abused then should use the most economical car possible mah, thats what i think. if the instructor use cars like subaru R1 then the passing rate sure very high. Friendstar Supercharged October 7, 2009 Share October 7, 2009 its also for their marketing. My female colleagues prefer to learn in a vios or city rather than an accent they deemed these cars as standard cars
Pcslim Neutral Newbie October 7, 2009 Share October 7, 2009 Ideally the learner car has to be similar or close to the size/make to the TP test cars used at the driving centres. I recalled BBDC used honda civic last time for TP test.

Mcke Neutral Newbie October 7, 2009 Share October 7, 2009 Why do I see only Japanese brand sedans being used as learner cars? Must a learner car be a sedan? Since its for learners, why not use a Korean ride which is cheaper? Or a small car that consumes less petrol? If you say so, why don't they choose even more economical car, china made? Japan car has a strong brand name and reliability here, so imo, they choose it for their reliability? Not only sedan. To my surprised, I saw some are using honda jazz. IMO, I learn driving using a Mazda 2. Hatchback and passed 1 time. What's wrong with learning with a hatchback? TP does measurements before they approve the types of cars used for learning. Therefore I don't think there is a huge problem out there, maybe just a lil' more training and it will be fine driving a normal sedan car. ↡ Advertisement
