Chickenbackside 1st Gear April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 Fruits and veges not all they're cracked up to be. Not that we paleo folks don't already know... http://www.theage.com.au/lifestyle/wellbei...00406-rpen.html Cancer shows scant regard for healthy diet KATE BENSON April 7, 2010 Salad daze ... study finds no evidence that fruits and vegetables ward off cancer. An international study of almost 500,000 people has confirmed that eating fruit and vegetables does not ward off cancer, debunking a 20-year-old edict by the World Health Organisation. It also casts a shadow over the federal government's $4.8 million advertising campaign, launched five years ago, to encourage people to eat two pieces of fruit and five serves of vegetables a day. But cancer experts yesterday urged people not to disregard the advice, saying a high intake of fruit and vegetables was still beneficial against heart disease and that some cancers, such as bowel and breast, were linked to obesity. ''We are still not clear why fresh fruits and vegetables would reduce cancer, but we do know that some cancers are related to obesity, so, regardless of these findings, people should be staying within a normal weight range,'' the chief executive of the Cancer Council of Australia, Ian Olver, said. The eight-year study, by researchers in Europe, analysed 478,000 people and found that eating about 400 grams of fruit and vegetables a day offered only modest protection against developing cancer. Published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and undertaken between 1992 and 2000, the study found ''no conclusive evidence'' of a link between cancer and fruit and vegetables despite a review in 1997 by the World Cancer Research Fund that claimed to have found convincing evidence. But Bruce Armstrong, a professor of public health at the University of Sydney, said the study, which did not focus on any particular cancer, masked the results for some types of the disease that were linked to diet. ''Fruit and vegetables definitely do have a protective effect against some cancers, so we have not been giving people the wrong message,'' he said. The results also support a 2007 Australian study that found that staying within a healthy weight range was more important in cancer prevention than following nutritional guidelines. Dr Kurt Harris sums it up nicely: http://www.paleonu.com/panu-weblog/2009/11...l-or-magic.html Plants and plant compounds are not essential or magic TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2009 AT 1:07PM Show me a randomized intervention that shows the benefits of fruits and vegetables. Such trials have been done and they have not shown a benefit. Same as the trials to limit fat consumption. It's "lets see what (olive oil, resveratrol, blueberries antioxidantss - insert name of magic chemical here) does in a test tube or in mice. Look, one of our many experiments shows something! Humans must have evolved to be dependent on this substance to optimize their health. Look, I don't read everything but I read a lot. I am not interested in dying early. The minute I see plausible evidence of some magic supplement working or an essential plant that is not commmon to all humans, I'll be the first one to promote it. Analogical reasoning (wolves eat leaves, therefore,,... ) is not enough. We need a plausible biochemical explanation combined with robust epidemiological evidence (rare) or real proof from an intervention. To overcome the inherent implausibility of a particular compound or plant being essential or uniquely beneficial to health, there must be a high standard of proof. Similar to the level of proof there that there is extraterrestrial intelligence. It's implausible, so good evidence is needed. If we believe, as I do, that the key to health is avoiding neolithic agents of disease and that the common element of all healthy populations is animal products, how can it be that any plant that was not universally available is essential to health? It is not impossible, but in the scientific sense it is highly implausible if you accept my other premises. I am not really that interested in what is possible - more so in what is very likely to be true. Part of this is philosophical as well, applying the 80/20 rule to health. I think the idea that one should micromanage dietary constituents based on speculative reasoning about magic special compounds is not only wrong, it is a big waste of time. There are many other things to occupy your time with. Counting, measuring, weighing and titrating food and and researching supplements and special foods? I have zero interest in that, as I'd rather practice my guitar or read a good book.

Hamburger Hypersonic April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 (edited) Include fruits and veggies for the micro-nutrients in them, not because your brain stops without sugar. Though also allow for the observation that some people function better on a slightly higher carb diet. (Experiment!) so does tat mean we still can eat 1 strawberry n a slice of apple n orange in a day.....???? Edited April 8, 2010 by Hamburger
Chickenbackside 1st Gear April 8, 2010 Share April 8, 2010 so does tat mean we still can eat 1 strawberry n a slice of apple n orange in a day.....???? It doesn't mean anything except that veges and fruits are not as beneficial as touted. They are not some magic food that is essential for your health. They do not stop you from getting cancer. Sure they contain micronutrients. But there are other arguably better sources to get them from. The way I see it is, they taste good, look good, go well with some of my meat, provide some vitamins and minerals (most of which I can get from my meat and organs), but I do not make them the focus of my diet. I always look for fat and protein first. Veges and fruits are second thoughts. Or put it this way, a person eating only animals will be far healthier than a person only eating plants. Chickenbackside 1st Gear April 9, 2010 Share April 9, 2010 He must be out to lose weight. It's not only low carb, it's low calorie as well. If you listen to the podcast episode where Jimmy Moore interviews Courtney Thorne Smith on his Livin' La Vida Low Carb show, it seems that most Hollywood actors eat low carb anyway. No surprise. There's nothing more effective than low carb + low calorie for weight loss or maintenance if they don't want to suffer the effects of starvation. Actually, the reverse may be true. Posted on 7 April 2010 If you want to cut your risk of heart disease, reduce intake of saturated fat and eat more carbohydrate. 1l0v3you Clutched April 9, 2010 Share April 9, 2010 I didn't think i had much issue with carb addiction.. its more a sugar addiction. i don't even like starchy food like rice and glutenous cakes, noodles and maybe potatoes and the lot. but i do crave the tiramisu, mud cakes, hot fudge.. those kind of things.. I guesss mine must be Type 3.. cry... anyway i lost another 1kg today by eating only 1 meal, dinner, which was a duck drum stick, almonds, pumpkin seeds (is pumpkin seed ok?) you eat very little.. i am so ashamed of myself hahaha. i'm a girl and i eat more than you LOL wtf . same as you, i have a sweet tooth. sometimes after working out, the craving for sweet stuff is just.. arghhh. frustrating. if i dont eat sweet stuff, i get headaches. Chickenbackside 1st Gear April 9, 2010 Share April 9, 2010 It does take some time to transform you body to become a fat burner. In the meantime, your body is going to be doing everything it can to resist change. But soldier on, the results and rewards both in terms of physique and health are well worth it. Skunk Clutched April 9, 2010 Share April 9, 2010 Hope this is not an oxymoron... Is lean mass "heavier" than fat mass? If so, then weight should increase no? Lean mass is denser than fat mass, as to how heavy, depends on how much u lose. Lose 3kg fats, gain 1kg muscle, total will still lose 2kg...and look alot slimmer as fats are very volumous. Chickenbackside 1st Gear April 9, 2010 Share April 9, 2010 I have been steadily gaining weight these 2 months. 4-5kg. But I don't worry about it. Why? It's all lean mass or muscle. My pants are slightly looser but my shirts are tighter especially in the shoulder and chest areas. Which coincides exactly with my strength gains recently. So, weight doesn't mean anything once you're no longer obese. Use your eyes, feel of your pants or better still, measurements to determine progress when you transit into the "normal" weight range. Hmm...but what if I want to just lose weight? At my fittest (during army time), I already weigh close to 90kg (I am 1.8m tall) - but I could easily do 20 pull ups, run the 2.4km in under 9 mins and clear SOC under 7.5 mins... But ever since I started working, I have been adding about 1kg every year... While I did managed to reduce my weight back to 90kg about 4 years ago - it was really via calorie depravation and a lot of exercising (jog, swim, gym every day)... But due to my increased workload (which translates into less time for exercising), I have "lost" it all again...sigh ↡ Advertisement
