Exercising without a gym

Thanks for chiming in bro.

Need people like you who have experience in this. I don't do marathons so I won't know the first thing about preparing for it. As i suspected, carb requirements must go up for such a long drawn out activity.

I enjoy running too and I run 10k's fasted (no food prior to the run for 15-16 hours) with zero problems. But I don't go further than that cos I don't really have the desire to although I still feel fresh at the 10k mark.

Hmm, maybe I should push and see how far I can go before I can't take it anymore... I'm guessing I should be able to finish a marathon but slowly...

I've taken part in 3 full marathons, and plenty of halfs. It's doable for somebody like you definitely with some long runs throw in. I found that it's really the spirit's willing the flesh is not. Without proper and enough training, it's not your stamina or will power that gives up, it's your muscles and flesh that's not been taking the pounding that gives up. That's what I found from experience. I certainly have done my share of walking cos i just didn't have the strength to lift my legs, not even to shuffle and it's not because I'm out of breadth. Cramps is another monster that we need to fight. Without sufficient training and right amount of hydration before and during the run, cramps will come. And when it hits you, you just've to stop.

Challenge yourself CBS, see if you can do a half this year! [drivingcar]

The only opponent /biggest that you will need to fight and win against, is and has always been, yourself,

one has nothing to prove to anyone how fast, how strong, one is, by pitting against others. One will know ones own limitations, but going past that pain barrier is a good sign, and most of the time, bad.

CBS. may years ago, during my younger days, we were on a very intense mission, 2 weeks, and it involved a lot of leg work, stamina, endurance. Cut the chase, I ran on my last day, with full load, till my feet were bleeding from all the blisters, and pain was intense, but I shut off the pain and went on, it was 24km.

The whole team had to be hospitalized for feet/leg injures, my feet were all bloody, that they had to cut my socks off.

What did I learn from that, well, that if I want, I can shut off all pain and push myself way past my own and other's endurance, but looking back, was it worth it? Yes and no, for me, at that age, yes, I know I can do the impossible, no, cos now my legs /feet are farked when it comes to running. I ran my last run 3 years ago, SC with my old team, and we all called it quits.

Life's short, live it, to the fullest, and live it strong.

BTW, I had a broken right toe as well, when I was running on full load. When we meet, I'll show you, up to this day, I can still see the scare of where the bone came out thru the flesh.

In short, it's all in the mind, the body can do anything. Just like Aristotle, you know I'm also on the zero carbs diet, and my mass has been shaved by so much now. People can go and contest as much as they want, no such thing as zero carbs yada, yada, yada. It will never end, but only when you have GONE on it, then will you know the REAL results. Aristotle in reading, yes, I too dropped weight like flies to baygone, 10kgs in 10 days, and thereafter, slow but steady, 1kg every 3 days.

Thanks guy, especially CBS, Aristotle,Topgun, MO for your tips and comments. This is my 1st full marthon, though I have done Half once but with carbo loading.

What do you guys drink energy drink(100 plus) along the way? They are sugar and carb laden, but it seems we may need it to replenish the loss energy and salt fast (being liquid, should absorb fast).

Anyway while googling, came across a book, The Paleo Diet for Athletes . Will be searching for this book locally.1

During active service and before my last few CS runs, we'd load up on carbs,

not any carbs, potatoes, baked, stewed with pork whatever, 48hrs prior.

Tried and tested. Drink, don't make things difficult for yourself, water is still and will

be the best.

Hi bro CBS

just realised that Farmer Union Greek Yoghurt comes with sugar [:(]

It has about 7grams per 100grams...

Is that bad or still okay?

Thanks for all the words of wisdom and experience topgun and MO.

I have no doubt it is possible to do a marathon on my current physical condition with more specific training, which was an impossibility just 1 year ago. I mean which is harder? Losing 35kg or training for a marathon? Maybe my love for running will increase to a point where I'd desire to train for a full marathon.

As for now, I'm curious to see if I can finish a 1/2 marathon without extra training from what I do now.

Bro. Nothing to prove, like I said, only one to beat is yourself.

Nothing more, injury in trying is not worth it. The bravest part and

to know your own limits and not injure yourself.

I have far too many demons in me now, at my age, pains in my knees,

my back, due to jump accidents. The price I paid wasn't worth it.

I'd be happy if I could just slip on a pair of slippers and enjoy the nice sun at the beach,

with a nice cold drink. (no sugar) :D

Why pay to run a marathon, when you can do it FREE on your own. [;)]

Lai, lai, lai. join us on the Singapore Bay Run aka Army Half Marathon. http://www.safra.sg/page.aspx?pageid=301

Sometimes we need some motivation to train or else it gets tiresome if becomes just routine exercise..

Half marathon for you should be easy. I can't even do half of what you training right now.

Yes, join us! I am doing the 1/2 marathon also in the SBR. 1/2 marathon is less than 1/2 the effort for a full marathon!!! [;)]

They don't add sugar. It's from the lactose in the milk.

It really depends on your goals. Do you eat 100g servings or more or less at a time? What's your carb intake like in a typical day? Are you still looking to lose weight? What's your exercise like?

Personally, I have no issues with 7g of milk sugar with my diet/exercise regime.

Hmm, in that case, I guess it's okay for me...

Have already consciously cut out sugar in my diet...

So a little probably won't hurt...

Still trying to stay in the losing weight phase - probably human nature - a little more probably won't hurt...hahah

Thats a good point!

Running on your own cannot create the same atmosphere and excitement as a race. The adrenalin makes you run faster than what you expect. It is totally exhilirating I tell you....At our level, a race is a race against yourself; whether a PB can be achieved.

For me, preparing for a race helps me in my daily runs. Otherwise, it gets kind of boring.

Also, for a Full Marathon, one usually trains up to 32km. It is the adrenalin and excitement during a race that will carry you for the next 10km! I doubt many people can actually run 42km on their own without a race.

Maybe I am lucky, but my company pays for almost all the races I enter ^_^

To add on, if there's no marathon race organised, don't think by myself, I would do 10km or 20km run monthly, gradually increasing towards 42km. There's a goal for me, and I'm training for it.

Nothing wrong with getting a few friends and having a run together.

Turbocharged

Ask all of you here.

If you have not signed up for any races/competition, will you still religiously do your workouts week in week out?

I have had 2 person asked me what am I training for/what race I had signed up for as I was exerting myself as much as I can w/o conking out in the gym. I told them: Nothing. I did not sign up for anything. [laugh] I only exercise because it keeps me more alert and generally better sense of well being.
