What this guy proposed, those current normal plate cars owners who never kenna ERP daily like me will convert to OPC.

Then the scheme is not OPC. it's Non-ERP Car

I am all for OPC ownership where owners know what they got into

But please don't buy economy seat and expect business class seat citing there's unsold seats

All-day driving idea for off-peak cars

I REFER to Wednesday's report, 'High COEs cool demand' on the drop in off-peak car (OPC) sales. Enhancements such as full-day Saturday use and electronic licences were added to the OPC scheme recently and I would like to suggest another enhancement.

Allow OPCs to be driven at any time, subject to this restriction: the first time each day an OPC is driven under an operational ERP gantry, the daily charge of $20 is deducted in addition to the prevailing ERP charge. In other words, the daily licence is applied for and paid simply by driving under an operational ERP gantry. No other application is necessary.

Subsequent passes under ERP gantries on the same day are charged at the prevailing ERP rate - the $20 is deducted only once. The technology of ERP gantries and in-vehicle units should allow this to be done easily.

An OPC driver who is careful to avoid ERP gantries will be able to drive his car free and be charged the daily licence fee only when on roads with high usage - where ERP gantries are located. Indeed, I believe such an enhancement will capture the true intent of the OPC scheme, which is to restrict car use during peak times and in places of high usage and allow free use at other times and places.

An OPC owner who lives in a suburban area with low road usage during the daytime, for example Yishun, Sengkang or Jurong, will be able to run errands, take children to and from school and drive elderly parents within the area without clogging up the roads.

Another advantage of using technology to deduct the daily licence fee automatically is that it does away with the need for the driver to apply for the licence and eliminates the need for enforcement.

I hope the Ministry of Transport will consider this suggestion.

Tan Soon Meng

I think this suggestion is fantastic.... Only if you add it on top of the current $20 for 7am to 7pm use for OPC, on top of the current $20 for day use, the first time they pass under ERP deduct $20 extra.... Hell make it each time they pass under make it $20 extra, that way they will really think twice before driving during peak hours into peak areas....

Really a case of give an inch and take a yard....

Surprised to spot an Audi A6 reg as a OPC, bring driven during weekday day time.

Owner could have got an A4 or cheaper Jap 2l car like Camry, Teana reg as normal plate. Costs less than an OPC A6 and dont have to pay $20 to drive

Nothing wrong, I ve seen a red plate red ferrari.  These are probably the 3rd or 4th car in the family, that are normally driven on w/e to country clubs or at night to functions at hotels.

But I do see more n more red plate BnB cars these days.  At today's car prices, it not worth to own red plates in my view.

Neutral Newbie

Given so much COE rebate, road tax rebate, full day saturday and selected public holiday eve, you will still have these people who can't really afford to own even a OPC car to come up with idiotic ideas to save money..

BTW, I also do not go through ERP.. ohmy.gif

Yes agree. I think many people in SG assume that OPC owners money no enuf to buy normal plate cars! :D

How wrong they are.

Of my 4 cars, 1 is an OPC (for weekend show off cruises and CC use).

Will be getting a second OPC for weekend marketing only.

Not to mention the really really low road tax for this Cat A ($50+ per year nia!!

It's really works for me and wifey, since we cannot possibly drive all our cars at the same time right?

The 4th one oredi earn $17,000 from garmen.

So will the 5th one, another $17,000!

Total 2 bites of the garmen cherry, saving $34,000 (significant!!) - shiok and tasty man ðð¼

Why even think of 'donating' such an amount to the LTA? ð

You already donate to them when you decide to buy a car, opc or not.

But red plate does comes with its perk for some users. Especially night shift workers or ppl buying a fun car for weekend drive.

Yup precisely. Only small minded people think that owning OPC is because one cannot afford. But little do they realise it's also the rich who benefits as they do not see the point in enriching LTA more when they have so many spare cars to use.

To those small minded people. These People have too many cars and not enough days to use them. Understand or not? The richer people are the more ngiao they are. That's why they are rich in the first place and you are not.
