Jeremy Clarkson on BMW's X1: It's 'rubbish !

Most of us weren't too thrilled when we first saw the BMW X1 last year in Frankfurt. The reasons were many and varied, but they can basically be lumped into one of two camps. First up is the aesthetics camp. Cries of "ugly" cropped up in the comments faster than they would have in a Susan Boyle Playmate layout.

 

While BMW's particular brand of crossover design has never been anything but controversial, we think the X1 looks pretty much okay. But the second, and maybe more vocal camp, can best be summed up as, "Why?" As in why would BMW bother? According to Top Gear ace Jeremy Clarkson, they shouldn't have.

 

No stranger to stinging reviews, even of BMW products (here's Jezza calling the 335 a "dog turd"), Jeremy really seems to particularly dislike the new X1. He hates the ride, the interior, the name (sDrive in particular), the diesel motor and the way it drives. Is there anything he likes about the small crossover? In a word, no.

1 series is a good car, especially those with the 3L and the 3L turbo, critics say these remind them of the old M3.

fanboys are stupid anyway. many of them are really narrow minded... what "ah sia kia" car or "ah pek/towkay" car opinions.

 

i have no particular allegiance.. i buy whatever i like that fits my budget, and suits my lifestyle/image. That's why i have switched between all 3 brands before and back again and would happily do so for my next car.

i think rankings are a very singaporean thing. it explains our national psyche (one track mind) a lot.

 

i would say they are apples vs oranges vs pears and i like all of them. which one i would choose will depend on what i want and need at that point in time but i have no special preferences nor aversions.

 

but casually speaking, if you have to compare within the same model class, BMW is very nice to drive but don't expect a lot of luxury, Merc is quite nice to drive, very comfortable, good aircon, good sound system, Audi front wheel drive not so nice to drive, but still better than many Jap cars, quite comfortable with very cold air con, nice sound system and dunno why women love it. Sometimes i wish i have one of each in my carpark to drive, depending on my mood.

As for "ultimate driving machine" crap, that's just marketing.

 

It really is that black and white. If making a nice car didn't make $$$, wld BMW bother to make cars? Or does it just want to give people a "ultimate driving experience" for nothing?

 

 

X1 and series 1 is simply along the ideal of making the company money. The cars are nice for what you pay but eventually every company wants to make more money.

BMW following the irreversible trend of mini-SUV/crossovers. look at Q5, qashqai, tiguan, and how well they're selling.

 

X1 is not doing badly given its low OMV of only 27k. luckily the uber-ugly merc GLK not in singapore.
