Ticklish8 3rd Gear July 20, 2010 Share July 20, 2010 A MAN was crushed to death when a tree, uprooted by strong winds during a heavy shower on Tuesday afternoon, fell onto his car and pinned him to his seat. The man was driving on a quiet slip road in the Upper Thomson area at about 2 pm when the accident happened. Rescuers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force took 20 minutes to extricate the body of the man from the crushed car. He was pronounced dead at about 2.50 pm. No one else was in the car. In June alone, about 240 trees fell, largely because of adverse weather. This is 170 per cent more than the same month last year, said National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan on Monday, in a written response to a question from an MP in Parliament. Mr Mah said over the years, the National Parks Board (NParks) has effectively reduced the number of fallen trees by close to 70 per cent - from about 3,100 cases in year 2000 to about 1,000 in 2009. He said NParks regularly inspects its trees for signs of poor health, disease, pests or structural defects, and takes preventive action where necessary to minimise risks of tree failure. 'Wind forces and sodden soil due to heavy rain, as we have experienced in June this year, can weaken the stability of all trees, even the healthy trees, and cause them to be uprooted. Such forces of nature are beyond NParks' control,' he said in response to a query from Mr Mr Baey Yam Keng, MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC. He added that NParks progressively replaces roadside trees with hardy species that are able to grow well in urban environment, and develop resilience against adverse weather conditions. 'NParks also identifies storm-vulnerable species that grow in the wild and removes them where necessary. In addition, NParks carries out regular tree pruning to remove weak or overgrown branches,' said the minister. 'It has also implemented an improved technique of crown reduction pruning which reduces the weight of foliage in the tree crown and achieves a more optimal crown to root ratio to enhance the stability of trees against rainstorms.' Scion Turbocharged July 20, 2010 Share July 20, 2010 RIP in a storm last month, i passed by YCK road and also saw a tree fell (luckily it fell into the bush, not onto the road) i estimated the tree to be abt 4 stories high... it wasn't uprooted, it broke its trunk... Atonchia Supersonic July 20, 2010 Share July 20, 2010 (edited) RIP and Condolences to his love ones. I was passing nearby along the Upper Thomson Road near the other fallen tree, Tagore lane junction around the same time. Its was really pouring then. This mid year quite a few incidents either caused directly or indirectly due to the adverse weather that happen once every 50 years. 1) THE Singapore Flyer was shut down on Sunday after being struck by lightning. 2)The Flood last Saturday, the NEA Meteorological Services said the downpour was caused by unstable weather conditions in the region, partly brought on by Typhoon Conson. 3)A BUS commuter died on Friday after the crane boom of a lorry smashed into the upper deck of the bus he was in. (Because the crane was there to trim the huge trees there) 4) The fallen tree on north-bound CTE that cause massive jams on one of the weekday afternoon. The statistics provided shown: Cases of fallen trees reduced by up to 70% last year SINGAPORE: The number of fallen trees dropped by up to 70 percent last year compared to nine years ago. Last year, some 1,000 cases of tree failures were reported. Edited July 20, 2010 by Atonchia
Nolicense Turbocharged July 20, 2010 Share July 20, 2010 unless can prove that the tree falling is cause by NEA lack of maintenance and hence negligence think there was a case about a lamp post fall on a boy and killed him. think the judge ruled negligence on the part of PWD. the logic should be the same for trees planted by the road side.. no? anyway the choice of trees are typical rain forest trees. these trees are meant to grow fast, and drop deadwood to the ground from time to time.. I'd be surprised if no branches or trees fall after heavy rains.. NEA should really choose trees that grow slow and steady rather than rain forest trees for road side planting of trees.
