Legan 1st Gear October 18, 2010 Share October 18, 2010 Hi everyone, I'm driving a Latio (CVT). For the past few months, I experience pinging when going up slope and also at low rpm. Last week I changed to RON98 and the pinging is gone. But I would like to go back to RON95 or even RON92. Anyone can advise what to do? I read that need to adjust ignition timing? Thanks ↡ Advertisement
Watwheels Supersonic October 18, 2010 Share October 18, 2010 Carbon deposits can also cause pre-ignition in the combustion chamber. Maybe you can try using fuel system cleaner & do an engine flush also. After you used these make sure you change the engine oil & filter.
XALmoN Neutral Newbie October 18, 2010 Share October 18, 2010 try to floor your accelerator once in awhile, this gets rid of carbon build up.. italian tuneup, thats what its called.

Thanks What is e recommended ron fr yr car? As long as u stick to it, u sud not need to adjust anything. Retarding yr ing timing wil cause yr car to lose power n it wil feel sluggish. Legan 1st Gear October 18, 2010 Author Share October 18, 2010 TCM engine flush is quite ex I think. Cos my servicing is done by them due to package. Bo bian maybe have to ask them do it. I do rev it to near redline sometimes.... Didn't seem to help Wanted to change plugs but apparently Latio's design is such that to access the plugs, have to do a lot of work. Hamburger Hypersonic October 18, 2010 Share October 18, 2010 modern engine will retard the ignition timing so as not to cause pinging. your worry is unfounded.....
Melvyn Neutral Newbie October 18, 2010 Share October 18, 2010 Since it's a CVT and the pinging occurs during going up slope or down slope, it should be at partial engine load and not full throttle right? Cuz changing to higher octane is useful to rectify WOT pinging and not for partial throttle. Yours shd be a case of carbon buildup as it insulates the cylinder head and prevents cooling. This raises the temp inside and induces ping. Plus this in turn raises compression. What ya need to do is clear the carbon deposit and it shd happily go back to drinking RON95. Plus it would be a good idea to check the spark plugs to see if they are operating fine. One faulty one may misfire and the ECM may have detected this and leaned out the AFM to the other cylinders thus pinging the engine. It would be most useful if you could state how old your ride is and what plugs you are using as too cold or hot plugs could also affect the setup and some other more tech-inclined forummer can contribute. My ride used to have a misfiring cylinder 2 and this in turn induced pinging. Wasted nearly a day trying to rectify the fault when all I had to do was just to change the stupid plug in the cylinder. Legan 1st Gear October 18, 2010 Author Share October 18, 2010 Wow. Long reply. Makes sense to me though :) My car is 2.5 years old and using stock plug. Now I've done 68935km on it
Kb27 Supersonic October 19, 2010 Share October 19, 2010 Try a cheap fix first. Drop a bottle of Redline fuel system cleaner SI-1 into your petrol tank of 98 and drive it finished. Then use 95 to see if it still pings. With modern day engine, I don't think you can easily retard timing since it's controlled by ecu.
Legan 1st Gear October 19, 2010 Author Share October 19, 2010 I've done it before. Even adding small quantity of 2T but doesn't work.

Thanks Check if the recommened petrol is Octane98, or Octane95, or Octane92 I assume the pinging was heard when using Octane95 petrol: May not work well by adjusting the ignition timing, since your car is with CVT (engine may have other problems next). For manual transmission, I simply take more time to change to higher gear than on flat/level road. After a while, I use Octane95 to avoid the hazzle with Octane92
Dtitan 1st Gear October 19, 2010 Share October 19, 2010 Hi bro, I drive Latio too (4AT) 130k km, 4yrs car Used to pump RON95(Mobil), then started to ping. Changed to 98 (mobil) still ping. then try caltex 98, ping stops. Spoken Tan Chong adviser before, ask me to clear carbon on h'way.

Very difficult to find Redline fuel system cleaner on the shelves of petrol kiosks. Even Autobacs, Carrefour and Giant don't carry them. Is there any reason? Trying very hard to look for one in the western part of this island, anyone has a clue? BTW, how does Redex compare with Redline?

Legan 1st Gear October 19, 2010 Author Share October 19, 2010 Like I said, Latio's spark plug is difficult to access. Seems like must take out manifold before they can access. So I'm hoping to see if there are easier ways to solve the problem. :)

I'm using the product from 3M, comes in 2 bottles. Can be found in supermarts like Giant or Carrerfour. Although the instruction is to use the 2 bottles at once for a certain big capacity of fuel tank, it's more advisable to use use 1 bottle at a each full tank otherwise you will experience loss of power. ↡ Advertisement
