True, trends change and funding needs to be re-directed towards whatever priorities the management may have.

But to renege on agreements that are in no way ambiguous isn't exactly the best way to earn the trust of your customers, especially when you consider the AUD$250,000 dollars was Australian Taxpayer money.

So picture this, they took a suitcase full of YOUR money, promisted to invest in the plant, keep the manufacturing industry in your country alive, and employ hundreds of fellow Aussies, and then kept the money, backtracked on all their promises. How would you feel as an Aussie?

You don't buy products from a company you cannot trust.

IMO business wise there is no attachments and is not personal. It's down to what is written on the agreement.

Of course it's nothing personal. It's an agreement between the Australian Government and GM, not between an individual taxpayer and Holden.

Btw, I made an error of several zeroes on the amount they got from Australian Taxpayers...

General Motors gave Prime Minister Scott Morrison just three minutes' notice of its decision to axe the Holden brand after 72 years.

Despite receiving billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies over many decades, to keep its manufacturing afloat, GM showed little loyalty to the Australian government.

Mr Morrison has slammed the American car giant.

'I am angry – they let the brand wither away on their watch,' he told reporters.

And you wonder how, this isn't like lining up every single Aussie in a file and giving each one a kick to the nuts as hard as one possibly can.

Toyota & Ford was sensible enough to pull the plug earlier

Vietnam's Vinfast to the rescue!

https://paultan.org/2020/02/28/vietnams-vinfast-enters-australia-eyes-holden-assets/

VinFast has its sights set on Australia, and is eyeing assets of the just wound down Holden. According to carsales.com.au, the young Vietnamese carmaker – which set up shop in Melbourne last December – has hired Holden engineers, and has showed interest in GM’s unwanted facilities.

According to the report, VinFast, which has global ambitions, moved into Port Melbourne in December 2019. VinFast Engineering Australia aims to initially employ a few hundred engineers at the centre, which is very close to Holden’s headquarters.

“Australia is a developed automobile market which has available suppliers, skills that VinFast wants to tap into. VinFast Engineering Australia is responsible for product development for some of our future car models,” VinFast deputy CEO Jim DeLuca said.

VinFast also reportedly has interest in acquiring GM’s design and engineering facilities that are about to be closed down along with the Holden brand, including the Lang Lang test centre. “We currently work with business partners to do vehicle styling and validation. We are interested in any type of vertical integration that makes us more efficient and the business more cost effective,” DeLuca said in response.

According to carsales, VinFast has already hired prominent Australian automotive execs of late, including manufacturing global VP Shaun Calvert, who worked at Holden and GM between 2001 and 2017.

Other senior hires include 25-year Holden and GM veteran Kevin Yardley, and chassis and powertrain integration chief Joe Sawyer, who has been at Holden for 23 years. It is said that up to 800 people are currently employed at Holden, including hundreds of engineering and design staff, so the pool for VinFast is big.“We have many Australian colleagues in our plant in Vietnam who have joined us right at the beginning of the project. They have been a critical part of our family and contributing to the success of our company,” DeLuca said.

Maybe they aren't really to blame for Holder's downfall. It's the pay master (GM) that called the shots. Maybe they are working with their hands and feet tightly bound.

to buy over the brand name for a token fee of 1 dollar is easier to get market acceptance than to push VinFast to the global stage.

Don't think it'll be easy for the Vietnamese to replicate the PRCs success in turning around a dead brand

First of all, there's no sizeable domestic market for the Vietnamese to flog a dead horse

Secondly, the racist white aussies would probably not take orders easily from the viets

Thirdly, brands like Volvo, MG, still have brand heritage value outside of it's home country. Holden simi heritage value outside Oz?

The article didn't say that VinFast want to resurrect the Holden brand. They are more interested in pushing their own brand.

They just want to leverage on Holden's facilities and the design/manufacturing abilities to hasten their development.

Do the Bogans have any other choice of car make which is indigenous after the departure of Holden?? ........ so the brand name Holden will still ring in their hearts n minds
