I think it depends on individual needs.

 

Scheduling and changing a battery every year is probably a minor inconvenience.

 

For me it's advantages far outweight the cons.

 

1. I have tenants. I used to duplicate keys for them, sometimes they lose it. With digital locks, no need to do that anymore, even when tenants changed.

 

2. My house keys were attached to the car key. When I left the car at a workshop for overnight repairs, I took public transport home to find that I have forgotten my house keys, still attached to the car key. By then, the ws has closed. It's a panic trying to find someone with key, when nobody's at home. Not anymore with digital lock.

 

Even if my current digital lock dies, I'll probably replaced it with another one.

 

The convenience it offers is just too great.

you have to understand how the locking mechanism for the digital vs traditional lock works.

 

once bolted and locked, both are equally resistant or prone to brute force entry.

 

If you are concerned about the security from the breeching of the locking mechanism, picking a traditional lock is easier than picking a digital lock. Finger prints recognition is not as easy to breech as popularly thought. You probably need to have some picasso or a few crates of gold bars stored in your house to make it worth the while to even try.

 

 

Yeah digital lock sounds weak, but it's still a full deadbolt, against brute force entry.

 

I agree it's probably easier to pick a manual lock then try all the number combinations of a digital lock.

I just switch to Yale digital lock 4109 and find it so much more convenient.  Now I don't have to lock my door when I leave house, it auto lock. It also auto lock when I get it to my house which I tend to forget locking my door after I get in.

I bought together with other stuff for free shipment above 125USD.  

 

Select the 5/8 size if your letter box is similar to HDB letter box type if you are buying.  This lock comes with 3 cams, 1 long straight, 1 long bend and short straight (too short for my letter box).  I cut the long bend cam with a saw. Just a few minutes job if you have the right tools.  

 

There is a youtube video to teach you how to install, search combi-cam in youtube.

I don't know about you guys but the yale ones I use actually have contact points at the base for a 9v battery to be used for emergencies in case I'm an absolute idiot and ignore the "low batt" warning chimes.

these cam locks are low security locks.

 

Even the traditional key operated ones on your mailbox can be opened in under 10seconds by a professional locksmith or an amateur lock enthusiast.

 

Question to ask should be: is there anything in my mailbox that I foresee someone specifically targeting my mailbox to steal? For my case, no. Unless someone wants to pay for my bills.

Anything of importance or of value will be via registered mail anyway.

You expect the lock to last life time? After gaining access to the master unit( control) just replace with new batteries. The lock are as good as new for another year or two.

 

Frankly speaking after using for 8,9 months I find it very convenient especially when I am carrying groceries.

 

The downside I still need to carry a key for my letterbox. Sigh.

I keep one at my mum place (anothe unit at the same block), one inside my car.

Actually, I also don't trust my car remote lock so I still have the key with me and have a hidden switch in the car to kill the alarm if the remote not working. Lol. Happened to me twice already so I don't want to take any more chances. Had to drive home with the car alarm ringing cuz the remote stopped working. Anyway, no one seemed to care that I was driving a car with the alarm on.

Yes, correct. It's the cheap aftermarket version.

 

It decide to do a last thing to screw me before the battery died.

 

Otherwise, it has never done that before.
