Engine oil change DIY

I use a fumoto valve. Anyway still have to crawl under the car to change the filter and have an oil pan to catch the oil. If the filter was on the top of the few cars I DIY I would have bought the extractor. Else it's extra work to drain both the oil pan and then also extractor.

I used the sucking method once on a Avante.

After which, I removed the drain plug just to see, and nothing comes out. It's completely dry.

It's like trying to suck a drink from a straw.

If the bottom is held flat, you can suck until you hear the slog..slog,..slog..sound of air instead of water.

Normally, if you use the drain plug method, you would have to wait until most of the oil drip stops.

You may have to deal with hot oil rushing out and burning your hand once the plug is loosened and land in the pan later to be covered full of oil, and you need to go fishing for the plug.

You may also have to replace the plug and/or gasket, depending on its condition.

On some cars, you may have to remove/replace plastics "protecting" the oil pan.

Whether it's more efficient, it depends on whether you like to carry that thing around and then empty the oil or you like to carry a jack, maybe a stand, get under with a pan, to do the oil change.

OK so maybe next time a ws wan to use the suck method, I give it a try then.

I just so used to using the drain method cos thats how it has been done from the first day I started driving.

The suck method is not 100%. It depends on the car engine design.

On some engine, the tube can't be inserted all the way to the bottom due to a baffle or plate blocking the way, so it can't suck out everything.

For those that can, you would be surprised how much oil it can sucked out.

I have a Mityvac vacuum pump. There's marking on the container so you can see how much oil it sucks out.

Of coz, it's always lesser than what the engine spec, due to lost or consumed oil.

Whether ws wants to use it or not, I guess it depends on their convenience, and how they drain the oil.

I read somewhere that Mercedes engine are designed for oil to be sucked out.

Ya I also thinking of the baffle palte blocking the tube.

Anyway its something different so maybe after some time, all ws wil b using it........if its good.

Actually having those equipment that makes the job easier is increasing productivity which sud lower running costs fr the ws.

After they invest in these items, their labour charges sud come down not go up.

You see, when you spend money on more equipments in your business, you will want to recur the investment ASAP.

So usually, they will increase the price some where to quickly earn back their investment.

As we all know, the prices once up, never comes down.. :(

I think there is hardly any ws that uses the suck method. As I believe a simple pump will take longer than drain and a good pump may be too "costly" for them.

some more like what Kb27 said, not all cars are able to use the sucking method.

Nevertheless, do let me know your experience if you find one!

1) But improvments in technology is supposed to increase efficency n reduce workload which sud lower costs. If it doesnt, then its no good n sud b junked. Just stick to the old drain by the plug method then.

2) Ya so far I only had the suck method on my ATF when it was flushed by a machine.

Maybe the ws already invested in the same machine to flush the autobox(ATF) so r trying to find other uses for that machine to increase revenue.

Yeah.. the cost saving should pass to consumer like us.. I agree with both arms and legs up..

but i do understand that it is very difficult for business operator to lower their price just because they break even the machine cost. they can simply use it as a good excuse for better margin..

In SG the safest place to dispose yr old EO is at a ws. Cannot throw in drain or sewer.

Container u can use some petrol to rinse it. Leave it in the open to dry b4 u keep cos the petrol fumes can cause a fire hazard if store in a closed place.

Just did my diy oil change yesterday, manage to pump out 3.5l of EO using the pump. also manage to replace the oil filter after some hard time , the only thing I can't remove is the oil plug. It should be of the anti-clockwise direction rite. But no matter how I try still couldn't get it to move and now the nut is abit out of shape. ANy advise. Driving a Suzuki SX4.

Not only the nut screwed, the threads on the hole probably up lorry also.

Common issues here as w/s mechanic simply loves to over-tightened them.

So what can be done?

Either go to a workshop to let them remove or you use a proper tool.

6 point socket with flank/side drive that does not round off the edge and a long ratchet or breaker bar.
