FT86 and BRZ!!

Has the price for this basic car at $170,000. Looks like its beyond my dream.

 

Looking likes as expensive as the mercedesC180 and BMW318. I mean at anything above $150,000 I would surely get a branded conti.

 

Guess it will not be a mass market seller, as there are many other Conti cars that are turbo charged and rear wheel drive below that price point.

Don't forget a 2nd hand TC Conti car will be a reliability nightmare and expensive to repair out of warranty. TC Golfs and Scirrocos are all FWD/AWD and still can't drift/power oversteer like a well set-up RWD car can. The only Rear Wheel Drive Conti car that most approximates a FT86/BRZ's handling characteristics will be a Porsche Cayman and that is approximately TWICE the price of a FT86.

There you go, the keyword here is used. The same can be said for buying a used GT-86 when they are available in the resale market which is still cheaper than any of the used conti cars mentioned above. Different people have different utility when it comes to comparing used and new vehicles.

I go with depreciation. Yes used but if a used 125 and a new 86 have similar depreciation, you might go for the 86, I'll go for the 125i

$170,000 for a basic Toyota just because of the drivability and RWD fun is not worth it.

Might as well get a Mark-X or some PI Caymen and BMW.

A brand new 86 is going for 170k, take into account an rough OMV value of $32,000 (i'm just guessing) , your depreciation is $15,240. Even if optimistically, OMV is $35,000, your depreciation will be approx $15,075. Quite similar to the BMW no? But of course a big disadvantage of the BMW will be the road tax.

 

I really like the 86, but one of it's selling points and key development milestones was to have it at a price point within reach of young people. Unfortunately, at $15,000+ a year depre, there are many other cars out there worth considering. MX5s, RX8s, Fairladies, BMWs and maybe at a stretch, Elises, 1st generation Boxsters. If you want to go even further back in time, FC/FD RX7s too. All great cars to drive and have fun in. All RWD.

 

If talking about warranty of new car vs no warranty of old cars, imo, buyers of the 86 are probably gonna throw the warranty into the bin once it steps out of the showroom. And BMWs without warranty, there are many competent BMW specialist workshops out there. If warranty bugs you, then by all means go for the new car.

 

I'm not the only one comparing the 86 with used cars, even the latest issue of REV SPEED is comparing the 86 with a selection of new and used sports cars at different price points and where the 86 fits in.

In other countries, its perfectly normal to cross shop between used & new cars. The main selling points of getting new car are better spec, updated looks & equipment, & of course warranty & freshness.

 

When my Iphone 3GS started to show sign of dying, I will get the lastest Iphone, or maybe some other smartphone, no issue, as they will be better.

Like people will change for last generation 7 series to new one, because its an improvement.

I think the point is that it is much more value-for-money to buy a used car. The premium you pay is lower, and hence the depreciation is lower as well. But for this reason, we should not be comparing the depreciation of new cars with used cars...

Assuming the exact same car (not facelifted nor improved in any way), if you buy it brand new, your depreciation is much higher than if you buy the exact same car if it was 3 years or older. The value of a car does not decrease linearly. It is a sharp fall from new till about 5 years old, but much more "gentle" till it is 10 years (assuming no big variance in COE).

 

So comparing the depreciation of a new and used car is not an apple-to-apple comparison, much more so if you're comparing cars of different makes/models.
