COEs mainly for the rich? That's life

AS ITS designation states, the certificate of entitlement (COE) is an entitlement and assumes that as every person feels he is entitled to it, a price must be levied to show that one truly needs it ('COE domination by high-end marque buyers an unhealthy trend' by Mr Johnnie Chia; Wednesday).

In a meritocracy like Singapore, one earns more if one works harder and smarter than the other person. If an average-income earner wants a car badly, he will have to lift himself to a higher income bracket by working harder or smarter.

That is the COE's first benefit: as a spur to improving one's lot in order to secure a car.

Except for the peak-hour crunch, public transport is first-class. Without the COE, the roads would be clogged, and this is the COE's second benefit: freeing roads for efficient public transport commuting.

Mr Chia laments that stiff COE prices favour the wealthy, who can afford to buy more than one car.

What is also true is that a rich person can drive only one car at a time, so the second car is kept at home, and is not out on the streets causing pollution.

And that is the third benefit: fewer cars, less pollution.

Furthermore, the wealthy person pays a hefty premium to own a car he keeps in his garage and we should be thankful for his tax contribution: It helps pay for public conveniences.

My point is, one should always consider both sides of an issue.

When a person is wealthy and drives a Ferrari and is busy forging deals, he will be only too happy to have an Electronic Road Pricing system in place, so he can zip around and close another productive deal - and pay the salaries of his average-income employees.

That's life.

I hope ICA takes note of this FT guy and not approve his PR application....it obvious his aim here is to earn $ and nothing else.

FT/PR contribute to the economy? Mind you, you don't work for free! You get paid just like everyone else, so wat do you contribute? You paid taxes? So does everyone else! What's the big deal with your tax payment huh!

Oh yes, if u really want to look for an alternative, pls go to Indonesia, heard houses there r cheaper n much bigger....:D

Won't be called a cooling measure if FT are happy. What's going to happen is the regular FT will continue to leave, rent or convert themselves to PR. The wealthy FT will continue to buy.

Or they apply for PR..

Nowadays its no longer easy to apply for PR and Citizenship. Govt has tighten the criteria (they should have done that long ago!)

So this FT talk like as if he sure can get PR when he applies for it, one year later. Dream on lah!

FT came here for less than 1 year and dare to talk about contribution.

Many local uncles here have been staying and contributing for the past 40 years, in this case should we deserve some National Day award or something?

Orbi good. Gahmen doing *something* right at last.

Good, good, PAP, do more, do more. Lots and lots more to penalise ephemeral FTs and incentivise the born and bred Sgreans. This is only a start, and it's a long road ahead, but you may actually be able to win my vote come 2016 if you keep doing more stuff like this. ^_^

Suggestion: take a leaf out of the OZ book and force FTs who leave Sg (and that includes PRs who leave Sg and don't return for more than one cumulative year out of three) to sell their properties. To Singaporeans.
