Elfenstar 3rd Gear February 3, 2012 Share February 3, 2012 until now, I am still puzzle why the barrage of unfriendly comments being thrown at the principal. Every principal has his own vision for the school and that's why they are given some freedom to decide what is best for the school. So, each school has its own charactor and produces students with diversity. Taking them in totality, Singapore will become a more vibrant society and attractive to investors globally. Kids of very young age are already exposed to electronics gadgets like Ipad. So, what the RV principal does is the adopt it broadly. What's wrong with that? There will be section of society that may not be able to afford Ipad. So long as school has assistance scheme in place such as pay by installment or T-loan from computer labs, I think on the part of school, they had already done more than enough. The world is moving. Country is progressing. We cannot stop our progress just because a small group of citizen is struggling to catch up. Instead, we should be pressing on with helps and support schemes for people struggling to catch up. In schools, there is financial aid scheme (FAS) available to all in need. Free uniform and shoes, free textbooks, free school fee, free transport, free recess break. All the schools ask for from the receipents are to please come to school everyday, study hard, submit your home work promptly, behave well in school etc. But most of the receipents are not even doing half of what is expected of them And you see their parents carrying latest iphone, smoke a few packs of cigerattes a day, can't hold on to a proper day job and their kids are under FAS. KPKB no money for kids education needs. What you want me to say???? The Financial Assistance Scheme does not apply to things like iPads. Thus far there is no assistance at RV for those that can't afford it. If the principle really wants iPads for all students, he should find someway to give/rent/loan them all iPads. He's an educator, and thus should make do with what he has to work with, rather than to place a burden on others for things to be the way he wants it to be. Anyone got more news ? hmm you must have misread the article. i read it too, didnt say it was compulsory - it was encouraged. and it was not implied that students who dont get iPads have to transfer sch? they can get subsidy or even rent one for free from the sch... u should brush up your reading and comprehension skills! another issue overblown by both traditional and social media ... smrt, ministerial salaries, scdf cnb case, false accident that killed recruit ... such issues are important, but sg need to learn to think thrice before commenting ... it is too easy to fall into misunderstandings and exaggeration traps. Fat_slayer 4th Gear February 4, 2012 Share February 4, 2012 I worry for the students using gadgets for their studies as those equipment unlike textbooks or notebook might breakdown one day and if it happens during the exam period then how? Conversely, a student can just use the excuse that the gadget refuse to work when he was busy playing or just plain lazy to do his work and submit online. More cons than pros. Mkl22 Supersonic December 20, 2012 Share December 20, 2012 SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has redeployed the principal of River Valley High School Mr Steven Koh Yong Chiah. This comes after MOE received information by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) that Mr Koh is assisting in its investigations. MOE has appointed Mrs Teo Khin Hiang as the new principal of River Valley High, with effect from 20 December 2012. Mrs Teo, 54, is an experienced senior education officer. She was the deputy director of the Programme Coordination Office in MOE HQ, and previously the principal of the Singapore Teachers' Academy for the Arts (STAR). Prior to her stint at STAR, she had held appointments as cluster superintendent and principal of three schools - Chua Chu Kang Secondary, Pasir Ris Crest Secondary and Commonwealth Secondary. A ministry spokesperson said MOE will work closely with Mrs Teo and her team at River Valley High to ensure that school activities and programmes continue to be carried out smoothly in the best interests of the students. MOE will be redeploying Mr Steven Koh to MOE HQ as principal (special projects). The spokesperson added that MOE is unable to comment further on the case, as investigations are ongoing. - CNA/ir is the probe related to the ipad saga? Toothiewabbit Supersonic January 21, 2016 Share January 21, 2016 Four weeks jail. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/mobile/singapore/ex-river-valley-high/2405832.html AA SINGAPORE: A former principal of River Valley High School (RVHS) was sentenced to four weeks of jail on Thursday (Jan 21), for lying to the Ministry of Education about his sexual relationship with a vendor. Another charge for giving false information to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) was taken into consideration in sentencing 61-year-old Koh Yong Chiah. Koh's lawyer Lawrence Ang said they plan to appeal the sentence. In the meantime, the former principal is granted bail of S$15,000 pending the hearing. Koh met Ms Ivy Loke Wai Lin, 55, in 2000 when he was principal of The Chinese High School. They eventually developed a sexual relationship with each other. Ms Loke was the director and majority shareholder of two companies that provided schools with education-related services, such as the organisation of overseas school trips. MOE’s Director General of Education received an anonymous complaint about Koh’s extramarital affair with Ms Loke in November 2005, alleging the two were behaving inappropriately on school premises and on overseas school trips. Koh denied the allegations when interviewed by MOE about them, and continued to award Ms Loke the contracts after the incident. At the time, he had already awarded her six contracts worth S$162,491. He subsequently awarded Ms Loke another 87 contracts, worth about S$3.2 million, from 2005 to 2012. In mitigation, Mr Ang had said that no financial loss was suffered by MOE, and Koh did not benefit financially. He also said that it appeared Ms Loke had "delivered satisfactorily" on the contracts. He called for a fine to be imposed on his client. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor G Kannan pressed for a jail term of between four to six weeks for Koh. saying that even if Ms Loke delivered on the contracts satisfactorily, it did not detract from the fact that the contracts were still "improperly awarded" as Koh had failed to declare the conflict of interest. He also noted that Koh was a senior public officer who lied to an "even more senior public officer” over his relationship with a vendor. - CNA/mz
