While more rail lines are being built, bus services are being greatly ramped up.

I had the impression that LKY preferred bus model rather than MRT. Too many buses also slow down the traffic on the roads significantly...

Tough balancing game.

Looks like high chance of train breakdown really much higher than bus now, our train system really beyond hope. Like this how to encourage people to give up car?

They follow car lite by being train lite. I.e. Use less trains. Haha.

We seriously need an overhaul in lta and SMRT. Too many NATO people around. How long has it been since the woman left and we are still struggling to fix.

You forget that you see advertisement everywhere in train and station that they are telling us that they are working on it. Maybe they need another 10 years to get things fix.

That's why in order not to slow down traffic on the roads, they goal is to have lesser cars on the road, so that can give more road space to buses lo.

Lol, you are right. The faregate also handles a huge number of people, and yet never breakdown, and deduct the fare correctly.

Bukit Timah schools get DTL2 boost
Published on Jan 14, 2016
PANG XUE QIANG AND CHITRA KUMAR

DTL2school-ST.jpg?itok=HPPUQfvETHE opening of the new Downtown Line 2 has eased morning congestion outside the schools in the area.

Methodist Girls' School (MGS) and Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) (Barker Road) said there was a let-up in the long queues that usually form outside their schools, causing a massive gridlock on Bukit Timah Road from 6.40am to 7.30am.

ACS' (Barker Road) principal Peter Tan said: "The traffic situation appears to have improved after the first day of school. It is quite apparent that the traffic flow is better."

ACS (Barker Road) is near Stevens and Newton stations.

MGS vice-principal Diana Goh added: "We have noticed a slight improvement in the car congestion because it is really bad in the morning, usually.

"But we expect it to get better. I believe many of our girls live along the Downtown Line so it should be a direct train for them."

MGS at Blackmore Drive is next to the King Albert Park station.

A Straits Times poll of 50 students, from Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), Singapore Chinese Girls' School (SCGS), ACS (Barker Road), MGS and National Junior College, found that 40 per cent have been taking the train to school since classes reopened on Jan 4.

Of these, many used to take the bus previously. Only five of the students, who now take the train, used to get their parents to drop them off at school in cars previously.

Schools were confident that the congestion would improve further as more students become familiar with the new transport option.

SCGS teacher Melissa Loh said: "I think we have to give it some time to see how it goes. But we are very happy to have a station opposite us."

The all-girls school is opposite Stevens station.

The 16.6km Downtown Line 2, comprising 12 stations, opened on Dec 27 and connects residents from Bukit Panjang to Bugis.

Secondary 3 student Foo Li Ann from MGS, who lives at Lorong Chuan, said her travelling time to school has been reduced by 10 to 15 minutes and that she now wakes up later for school.

"My dad used to fetch me to school by car. We had to wake up very early in the morning because we wanted to avoid the jam. With Downtown Line 2, I take less time to go to school and I don't need to face the congestion," she said.

Schools said some parents were not very keen on letting their children take the train as giving their children a lift to school was part of their morning commute.

HCI student Yu Shin, 18, and her siblings, who live in Boon Lay, get a ride from their father as they all study in the Bukit Timah area.

"The 'daddy express' is faster and more convenient than taking the Downtown Line," she said.   [laugh]  [laugh]  [laugh]

with the new DTL2, can really see that EW line has lesser crowd toward town in the morning.

Lesser crowd towards town in the morning at EW line? Don't think so leh, crowds still depends on the frequency of the train come down from joo koon side. If the train can come about 2 mins per train, crowds will be lesser, if not crowds still the same whether got DTL2 or not.
