Happily1986 5th Gear March 3, 2012 Share March 3, 2012 any comments for Lenovo? Particularly the U400 model.. Here is my opinion. If you get a U400, inevitably people will ask you WHY didn't you get a U300 because as far as specs and the eye goes, there is a lot to show that the U400 is in fact an iteration of the U300, albeit with some important features left out e.g. SSD which is supplanted by a sedate 5400 SATA HDD. if you are looking for a midrange notebook, its size is what you should be looking at. 14 inches is the sweet spot as it provides the least screen real estate which gives you enough space for a standard notebook keyboard size. Yes, there IS a standard for notebook keyboard sizes. Anything else is actually substandard or non regular. To speak of the keyboard, it is exactly the same size as that found in U300 despite the fact that the latter is a good few inches smaller in dimensions. I am not impressed that Lenovo did not try to make good on the extra spacing found on the U400 vs the U300 which could have translated to a roomier keyboard layout as well as larger individual keyboard keys. Build quality should be good as the market has responded in kind by moving away from flimsy notebooks toward solid anodised aluminium monocoque designs. Think the HP DM3/4 with the chiclet keyboard layout. My other issue is with buying a notebook with an i5 which is based on Intel's Sandy Bridge. With Ivy Bridge just probably months or even weeks from launching, it may be wise to consider thinking twice. If you think Sandy Bridge is good, Ivy Bridge is even better as it represents a die shrink from 32nm to 22nm manufacturing architecture. Die shrinks automatically means power consumption goes down which is a big deal since the TDP (Thermal Dissipation Power) rating automaticallys goes down as well translating into energy savings and better battery stamina. 2009k Neutral Newbie March 3, 2012 Share March 3, 2012 Me paid 850 dollars for acer 4830tg running 17-2640m, 8gb ddr3, nvidia geforce, dvd with very lasting cell. Don't think the new ultrabooks can beat the balanced performance I get out of my acer yet. There are like 4 computer fair in a year, I believe by the forth computer fair we can get better and cheaper high specs devices.
SimonTan 2nd Gear March 4, 2012 Share March 4, 2012 Any expert and experienced advice. Are the prices there really cheap? Once I go to a normal Harvey Norman shop looking at cameras and laptops, the salesman said they can offer better price or more gifts instead. The salesman took out the day newspaper, and show me the ITshow prices advertised, and said he will match even better. He will match even if you bring the ITshow brochures to his show to buy from him! So my question is...is it really worth it to wait and buy from such ITshows??? Not very worth the trouble if you ask me. The difference is at most $50. Retail shops elsewhere will try to match the difference as they wanna do the sales and earn the money instead of paying for the stall at the IT fair.
