With BYD laying down the gauntlet, Toyota must be feeling the heat ...

In the month of January 2026, BYD sold 1,201 units an increase of 635 more units than the previous year (2025:566 units sold). BYD's aggressive pricing strategy is driving up sales and the loss of VES / EEAI credits at the start of 2026 hasn't hurt BYD's sales at all. Due to the lower OMV of BYD vehicles, the PARF bomb is also going to help BYD sales.

Looking at the petrol-electric ride comparison, future Toyota Harrier owners are going to loose about $49.3k compared to the future BYD Sealion 6 DMU-i owner who's going to loose a lot less at $25.5k over one CoE cycle. That $23.8k difference is going to pay for a lot of petrol over the 10 year period, not including the road tax difference that's in the favor BYD ($0.6k per year).

Looks like BYD is going to have another banner year in 2026. Would not be surprised in BYD retaining the No.1 spot and setting a new sales record.

How's Toyota sales been doing over the same period?

Toyota sales (Jan 2026 - including PI): 671 units

Toyota sales (Jan 2025 - including PI): 305 units

So Toyota had an increase of 366 more units than the previous year - which is okay, but not as good as BYD. There's little hope that Toyota can catch up to BYD now.

Who will want to buy Totota cars now? Don't think there is any attractive car model they have.

I've been to their cervicing center to do servicing of my car (non-BYD), based on my past experience, quite good. That place was used to be many European brand cervicing center, now the counter all change to BYD, and the car park were full of BYD and Denza.

Agree with you that Toyota doesn't have anything attractive model on offer.  However 7,466 Singaporeans did find Toyota attractive enough to part with their hard earned money and buy a new Toyota last year (2025). Another 671 Singaporeans also found something attractive in Toyota last month (Jan-2026). So there's lots of Singaporeans who love their Toyotas and willing to open their wallets to keep Toyota at No.2 position on the podium.

Good know that most Singaporeans are open minded and willing to give another brand such as BYD a try. They not stupid - once they discover the value for money on offer in terms of features, tech and quality.

Any place if there is BYD showroom/service centre, confirmed full of BYD to the brim. Lol.

I was not very serious about the sealion. The SE did not give any discount, the trade in price for my old car was $2k higher than others though.

He say BYD price is fixed...

My wife is super against BYD so we did not really bargain much.

Probably going with Tesla Model Y cat A.

Why your wife super against BYD? Lol.

Anyway, BYD SE would not bother much if you want to buy or not, since there are tons of people wanting to buy their cars. They lose a few customers doesn’t matter at all.

She feels the car is not safe or reliable. Mainly the brand i think. I actually like the sealion 7 because I thought the current discount is pretty big

Software issues are quite common problem for every manufacturer other than Tesla.

Like some people have lot of recurrent issues with VW ID cars in USA, some say its the best car they ever owned.

I think either software bit limited like in BYD, or those with only 2 car models like tesla and almost zero physical controls and doing this long time like TSLA, then still ok.

It is she don’t like China made cars? Or she really only don’t like BYD?

Their bZ4X is nicely spec (7.4sec century sprint), very spacious, and well priced, and have alot of buttons and knobs on the dashboard. Even 22kW ac charging some more. Would have gotten this over Tesla and other China EVs if I am in the market for one that is around $200k. Should have no problem winning back some diehard Toyota fans.
