Some things I noticed

Every culture have their own beliefs and practices. One may find it interesting or wasteful but before questioning others, do look at what your culture is doing and think if it's the same on one way or another.

[laugh] If this one has a culture to follow he wouldn't be asking and not "getting it".

Different strokes for different folks. Some do it out of respect, some do it out of fear. Others do it because they truly believe; yet others do it because of familiarity and tradition.

Every individual has his own set of rights and wrongs that are built upon his perceptions, knowledge and awareness. One man's meat is another's poison.

IMHO, society functions because there is tolerance, empathy and understanding. When these break, society breaks. We each can do our little part to keep the fabric of society glued together.

Often we look at others and the invisible finger of blame points at them. A vicious cycle of blame and anger then begins. To break the vicious cycle, the ones with greater awareness need to make the first move to empathise with the others. Only with that can there be harmony.

This morning when I came to work, the whole carpark was littered with 7th Month offerings that had blown from the incinerator.

This I don't understand. I'm just an ignorant furriner but it seems to me that there's a couple of takes on this

1. The offerings are burnt to send them to the "otherworld". If you are supposed to burn them, but don't - isn't that like throwing away stuff? Wouldn't be equivalent to drawing money for your parents, and then flushing it down the toilet?

2. If I did something like that, my grandparents would haunt me mercilessly

3. If you don't really believe, and are just doing this for the sake of tradition - don't you care that you are making one hell of a mess all other the place?

It just perplexes me. I don't get it.

By the way -

the part I don't get is the littering part, the part where people let offerings blow all over the place.

I totally get the making the offerings part. And do it myself.

Sorry if there was any confusion.

Havelock/Tiong Bahru. Maybe because mature estate. You'll probably see less of this in the newer estates such as Jurong West, Sengkang, Punggol, Sembawang and etc..

U got to be kidding me!!!! Sembawang has the hottest getai show!!! Doing impromptu pole dance revealing black undies. [:p]

You probably have not visited the Vatican meuseum.

Some of these very-telling Sumerian artifacts are kept there ... for theological reason.

The Vatican museums? Err yeah twice in my life. Once when i was young, once when i was older. It was very nice, although much of it was way too highbrow for my peasant brain and all i remember was the stupid piece of art on the ceiling and some holy crap and stuff. It was so dark that i couldn't even see clearly and they didn't allow photos to be taken.

I certainly did not remember any Sumerian shite... can buy and eat boh?

Less burning and offering. Recession time?

Also noticed that not many getais as before? Sign of things to come?

i also noticed that when there is no funeral, whole neighbourhood quiet for some time..

but when someone dies, there are usually a few funerals that will also spring up in close proximity around the neighbourhood. Do you notice that from a professional point of view?
