In United States cars are cheap because of their vast land space. In city like new york the parking (usd20 hourly) and housing is mind blogging expensive.

In big cities, usually driving in city is expensive. Many people opt to use subway or something else. In Germany, which is a 100% toll free roads (but I heard they wanted to have some sort of tolls in some bigger cities), the traffic in the city wasn't all that bad also. Many people either car pool, Park & ride, which I do all the time, & just ride, cycle or something.

If they do not travel far, sometimes, they rather walk or something, its not alike a big deal.

Just because you take train or bus doesn't mean you are poor, which I think is a mindset a lot of Singaporeans have. Many people die die must drive everyday even in occasion when its not need, or can carpool.

If we use cars at more moderate usage, cars would have been much cheaper, traffic much better in Singapore, in my opinion.

But in those place you mentioned, their cars do not have a lifespan or any fees to pay to extend their lifespan. Cars can be driven till they cannot move, but here we have a 10-year limit. Every day the car sits in the lot and is not moving, money is wasted. Of course everyone drives like there's no tomorrow.

i dont own a car yet, but dad's current latio (5 year old) bought at 56-57k with 16-17k coe..

I dont see how i am willing or can afford a new car with current situation.. in future when i go out to work...

I'm not sure if this is done, but why arent people buying like 2 years to COE car and just drive them til COE end.. wouldnt it be cheaper that way?..Image isnt a problem to me though

There is some justification for the ten years life span. without , there will be much more car breakdowns every day and everywhere, you can imagine the congestion as a result. also, it ensures car population growth is proportion to the scrapping off cars. again, in a country of vast land pace is ok, but not in a small country like ours.

yup, same in japan also, everyone takes the train to work, in suit and heels. i make a bold guess the hot weather is one factor that influence the way we commute. we wont want to even walk a few buy stops under the hot sun. maybe in cold weathered places is ok, not here.

Is there a coffee shop or hawker centre selling $20 for a plate of Chicken rice? I will not pay for that unless market price for a plate of chicken rice selling in a coffee shop is $20. :D
