Why only look at that pretty lady? [:p]

I had a chance to catch the debate and was kind of impressed with Shanmugam holding on his own during the show.

Unlike other channels when you often see a team of speakers/"experts" or whoever to share the debate, he was like on a one-man show.

Shanmugam literally had to think on his feet over this hot-button issue.

At least it was better than Teo Chee Hean asking "What do you think?" :D

Typical way of avoiding a question while throwing the same query back - it is like an indirect admission that one has no solution or simply clueless without compromising one's statesmanship.

The only person I know capable of pulling off such deflection trick is LKY and even sometimes using the same question against the asker (aka opponent) .

And I am saying this with admiration of this Man's political shrewdness. [laugh]

This shamu is good. Think n answer quick and rather truthful.

Sad to hear the example of those big mnc wanting to hire many of their own ppl rather than singaporeans.

But i m against the notion of cApping the fw, we all know jolly well that these fw are more urgently required than an avg ft....

We still need cleaners, construction workers, but not so much on educated ft, coz we have a pool of grads to fill in these roles. Unfortunately the govt is still not doing enough on this

Agreed, they should be capping FTs instead of FWs.

Kinda reminded me of this incident FT vs FW.

Sometimes, the word "talent" can be misconstrued as being "civilized".

So this is not just about generalization of foreigners, it is the person we should be looking at.

first of all....all government sectors must employ Singaporeans.....

....when they require lots of manpower....they will sub-con to companies who hire many FWs and FTs....

Go one big round to fart. :D

Then PA must be of MNC's status 'cos I rem the racist Aussie woman who kena sacked after posting her racist remarks on FB....... [laugh]

I won't blame the MNCs if they wanted to hire foreigners in some positions but I wonder if a garment-linked organisation like PA should lead by example to hire locals.......... <_<

A minimum wage would solve the problem of hiring foreigners. Other than top positions, mnc gladly pay less to foreigners to do the job. If Shammu means what he says, implement minimum wage for various job types, if not, everything else is just nice to hear.

Have to agree Shamu is good.

At the early part of the show, the participants were fiery and conversations were highly interactive from both sides.

After Shamu came out to speak, everyone kept quiet and diam diam to listen.

Feedback from some of my local Indian clients and butties, most top level fts brought in from India are mainly the fair skin upper caste Indians, our local majority are the dark skin, considered the lower caste to the fts, thus local Indians apply for positions or securing any contracts from this executives are not easy, which we other races don't directly felt it, they do. Most don't like the idea of bringing the caste system here .

you go into most marine and offshore companies in sinapore....mostly engineers and managers are indian and china foreigners....only 15% singaporeans....mostly older folks..

our future generation will pay for this.....

I also agree. I mean lets not forget that most of our ancestors who came to Singapore were also of the same level as the FWs and they worked very hard to make to help build and support this nation.

In comparisson, I've seen quite a number of FTs who appear to forget that they are guests here.

so why then are new graduates not interested to work in those industries? I've got a couple of classmates who are working in the industry and the pay is not bad. But they have to start work early and travel further. (companies are in Tuas)

And what about the technician level who are supposedly to come from the local ITEs? Where did all the ITE graduates go to?

I will do the same if I am in their shoes. What is low tax compare to the snowball medical bills that might happen to you when you are old. I rather pay higher taxes and know that once old age, my medical health is well taken care of.

How true this is....whatever prescription from the doctor's..just go to pharmacy and pay a few dollars(less than A$5 if ircc)....to get the heavily subsidize medicine, in turn the pharmacy will get their full $$ from the Govt.
