Kar_lover Supercharged April 22, 2014 Share April 22, 2014 The F1 season currently favours the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS due to their superior engine and skilled drivers (more a Lewis than Nico fan). I was glad Alonso took third place in the Shanghai GP, he is one of the best drivers out there. I hope the playing field will even out quickly, if not, it will start turning to a year where Mercedes AMG PETRONAS dominates and wins the Driver and Constructor Championship. Similar like previous years where Redbull Racing consistently outperforms the rest of other teams. Several years ago there was this series called A1 GP which sought to eliminate the car from the equation. All teams used the same car and engine and only difference is the tunning and setup of the car. The rest was all on the drivers. But after 2 or 3 seasons, closed shop as far as I know. So since same car format didn't work, I guess we have to accept the different car format which is what we have in F1. With rules that keep changing, advantage will also change. Maybe by 2nd half of the season RB will come good and catch merc depending on how big the gap is. Wondering when will it be Ferrari's turn? ↡ Advertisement
Tommisan 4th Gear April 22, 2014 Share April 22, 2014 This season, renault engine lost its competitiveness. Provide competitive car to the driver, I would hope the top teams can achieve this. Driver performance, most are great, some are just extraordinary. Ferrari, RBR and McLaren (including Force India and Williams) are the underdogs. I hope tides will turn in their favours. Between A1GP and F1, I have to go with F1 for the glam, fame and popularity.

GP2 has made it mandatory for all of the teams to use the same chassis, engine and tyre supplier so that true driver ability is reflected. we got to see more contacts driving in GP2 than in F1.
Vega Turbocharged April 22, 2014 Author Share April 22, 2014 Begs the question whether F1 boils down to average F1 driver in a very good car / poor car; very good driver in very good / poor car. its all about right car at the right time but engine power and its package is more impt than driving skills as top F1 drivers have very limited differentiation. Beregond Supersonic April 22, 2014 Share April 22, 2014 i would love it if they return back to the old time, when each team use their own tyres, from bridgestone to goodyear michelin, all running in the same races
Wt_know Supersonic April 22, 2014 Share April 22, 2014 (edited) use similar specs provides as equal level playing field as possible however, if every team is same old same old, it makes the sport boring in fact f1 is much more boring compare to old scheme where there was refuel, light fuel heavy fuel strategy, v8 engines, etc for the last few years, f1 is already in the downhill in terms of fan base.as bernie said, the fans are drying and the more he want to sex up f1 with more rules changes, the worst it gets. Super7 Turbocharged April 22, 2014 Share April 22, 2014 this is not true. GP2 has made it mandatory for all of the teams to use the same chassis, engine and tyre supplier so that true driver ability is reflected. we got to see more contacts driving in GP2 than in F1. It also depends on what the fans want. In some one-make races, the teams use identical engine and chassis, tyres, fuel, etc. The competition is really between the drivers' racing skills and strategies. These races have their fans and are relatively low cost to take part in if the cars are inexpensive to begin with eg low end race cars. For high end one-make races, the costs shoot up. These races tend to offer spectators the excitements of watching close fights, fender to fender racing. On the other hands, F1 etc allow different engines / chassis to compete within a set of rules. Teams with the bigger budgets usually stand a better chance to win as money buys technologies and/or driving skills. Personally I find races like GP2 more interesting as it allows the team with better drivers to win, not the teams with the fatter wallet..

Just OT a little: In terms of level-playing fields, the SuperGT series in Japan seems to go to the 'extreme' in that the winning teams will be given weight disadvantage in the next race ie ballasts will be added to the cars. Other series adopt a reversed grid in a 2-race format where the winners in race 1 will start at the back of the grid in race 2. Somehow, the truly fast teams still manage to win despite the weigth penalty or reversed grid. These races usually have closer fights and more overtakings.
