Apple Watch

I wear a watch because, when my phone die, I can still see the time...Now a watch that last shorter than my phone....

Also (correct me if I am wrong). There is no GPS, & the watch need to be connected to the phone for most stuff like GPS & Music to work. I do not want to run with a phone in my pocket or arm!

Hi u r right there is no built in GPS into the Apple Watch and GPS related data is taken from the iphone. Infact the apple Watch is very very reliant on the iphone.

GPS sync itself takes alot of energy. You can see this in many running watches and if this is left always on, it will reduce battery charge to less than 12hrs. Very few watches can manage this in an energy efficient manner. The Seiko Astron is one fine example where the GPS sync is paired with tough solar recharging technology. But this watch is also not cheap ($3-5k) and the GPS sync is once a day automatically for date and time adjustments.

If you really want a stand-alone smart watch, try looking at the android wear watches. There are quite afew. These watches have many more functions that stand alone and allow the watch to function independently from the phone. Latest updates to the Google watch has wifi functionality for more stand alone features like music streaming and email notifications.

Fer me, i will never get used to reading data from a small watch screen.

It needn't be tethered to the phone constantly... having said that... this is ver 1 so I don't see myself buying it either... this or any other smartwatch for now.

A very balanced review below... guy gives the positives and negatives succinctly;

and now they want us to read from smaller than previous screens...

dun waste money on this la...follow the saying, BIG is always BETTER, buay sala one. with that money just buy another budget phone if u really have the need to supplement your daily phone (1 phone not enuf).

I mean..wtf can u do on a small thing that needs frequent charges.

these people so rich always spend money then torture the product [:(]

Ok Now who is gonna take the leap

For me, it is a no brainer. I believe it would be coupled sometime with BP monitoring and that would be good considering my condition. Other things are analytics of my tennis game/progress etc.

Maybe not immediately, but as and when the system stabilises and matures!

The Apple Sg Store says available in 2015 but did not say exactly when. Do you know when it will be available in SG?

actually, the trick to the drop / bend test is to buy apple care before hand.

you spend $100 on the apple care ... slam the phone on the ground, pay another $108 and you get a brand new phone.

with apple care, you can get a replacement twice.

The Apple watch is not really a watch per se, it is part of a bigger eco system. As some bros already pointed out, it connects with your iphones etc, and very soon it will start your car engine. Apple is not just selling gadgets, they are creating a world of synchronized user experience, and this is something which the open source Android cannot even try to imitate.

But it also means; in order to fully enjoy and appreciate the world of synchronized user experience, you will have to buy, and keep buying, the latest, newest Apple gadgets.

Don't get me wrong, I am not an Apple user, and definitely not an Apple fan boy (or rather, fan uncle). In fact the only piece of Apple I ever owned was the Macintosh II back in the 80s, Since then I have always been a Windows guy, 486, pentium, pentium II, 2000, XP, Vista, and now 7 (haven't even got into 8 yet, that's how slow I am). But I take a lot of interest in how Apple conducts its business, how it shapes its world.

Like I said before; Jobs was one great dreamer / innovator, and Cook is one hell of a CEO. [thumbsup]

p.s.; as interested as I am, I will never understand those people who do those internet grind tests... I mean who the hell in their right mind would nuke their phones in a microwave or boil them in boiling water?

The reviewers don't just carry out the destructive tests on apple products alone. And it's not really about the money, I feel that it is unnecessarily wasteful to prove or test something not really useful. No doubt alot of youtube reviewers are trying to get as much viewers as possible, some even have retailers sending samples for them to test but still...

Do Apple give brand new products? It's been many years since i bought apple stuff. My old gen 5 ipod had alot of problem, went to the store to change and the exchange i got was a refurbished one.

As for the watch alone, I have totally no interest in it. Not sure where Apple is going with this eco system in the future and if the watch plays an important role in the system. If it is something like what Tony Stark is using in the movies then [thumbsup] .

WIth android, its already possible to start the engine of your car and control parts of it using your phone. With certain OBD2 devices, you can control alot of functions in the car including starting the engine and aircon.

Apple is smart. Instead of making a watch, he is going create a need for it. It will slowly evolve to a ecosystem if more firms participate and engage it.

I like the link up between porshce and apple

Yeah, no doubt the Android's got some cool stuffs going on for it, but that's about it.

With Android, anyone and their second cousins can be an Apps writer, and a lot of people do, that's why you can always find an abundance of Apps ready for you to download cheaply, if not free. But precisely because anyone can be an Android Apps writer, people write Apps that are inline with their own interests, or serve their benefits, but rarely with a common goal in mind. It's like you get a bag full of jigsaw puzzle pieces, they all seem to be from the same box, but somehow you simply cannot get them all to fall in place to form that one, bigger picture.

That's where Apple differs. Every move (well, maybe not every but at least the bigger ones) it makes it makes towards a common purpose; the bigger Apple Eco (iEco maybe?), and that is why everything can be, and in fact is, specifically engineered to form a seamless big picture.

Imagine basketball, on one hand you have a team of 5 made up of members who were just assembled off the streets and had never really played with another, and on the other hand, you have a team who's been training, eating, and staying together; assuming each player is equally good individually, which team would you think has a better chance of winning the game? In fact, the teams's so strong that everyone else wants in too. IBM is now working with Apple to develop hospital utilities for the ipad, heck even Blackberry, who was "supposedly" ran to the ground by the iphone (touchscreens vs tiny keyboards anyone?), is now asking for a piece of the Apple pie. [laugh]

But please, really, don't get me wrong, I'm not singing Apple nor am I bashing Android (or anyone else for that matter), in fact I'm not even what I would call tech-savvy, I'm just a regular guy on the street who likes to stand by the side to watch and observe how the world goes about its business. Yeah! [thumbsup]

edit to add: Of course, all the above are just my personal $0.02 worth of ignorant ranting, just an old guy seeing the world as he is. [:p]
