Lala81 Hypersonic October 18, 2014 Share October 18, 2014 This is very true... Many ppl tend to use the depre figure for new car for 10 years.. Of cos this figure will be much lower.. However, they didn't take into the consideration that the car may be sold for whatever reason way before the 10 years. When one sell the car before scrap, the depre figure actually went up due to all the losses and commission/margin to be given to the 2nd hand dealer.. It's just a comparison. And i think it's the most objective one. Among my friends, only 2 of us calculate the depre/year when we look at any car, new or used. Honestly, most pple don't use depre/year in calculating car price. They see, they like, they think price is fair, they buy.
Chowyunfatt Turbocharged October 18, 2014 Share October 18, 2014 manuals are much easier to maintain.. Of coz you are right ... But Singapore's bumper to bumper traffic daily makes Auto a more comfortable drive ... But I also like Manual GB.
Lala81 Hypersonic October 18, 2014 Share October 18, 2014 You meant this one? http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=431234&DL=1000 Drive for 3 1/2 mths till scrap on 1 Feb 2015, depreciate $3,500. This translates to an annual depreciation of $12,000. Rather get a used Camry which depreciates only $10,000 annually. http://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=430576&DL=1281 why get this model of camry. The prev gen camry 4 yr+ old can be found at high 12k/depre/year.

It doesn't matter the amount of leverage taken and the loan period and overall cost over the entire ownership period, hence, used cars are popular now as cash flow for a new car with 5 years loan is tough for most these days. But if you calculate based on depreciation, new car is more value for money.

But if u think something is going to change in next few years eg. family composition and family need, then go 2nd hand. My friends are all generally conservative with money and not high spenders. But haha still not many will look at absolute depreciation/year as the guideline. Edited October 18, 2014 by Lala81
car138 2nd Gear October 18, 2014 Share October 18, 2014 Haiz.... if everybody renew their COE.... Then the tsunami will not come next year but 6 years later... If too many people renew COE, then there will be a lot old cars. More old cars, more pollutions. Then policy may change to incentivize one to change new cars. Or tax the old car owner more to discourage to own such cars.

Or tax the old car owner more to discourage to own such cars. already have if you are not aware.. 110% - 150% road tax from year 11 onwards. max cap at year 15. and inspection every year where they seem to be molesting the car only.. lol Car ownership cost is not only depreciation. It is certainly not just monthly instalments either. No real comparison can be made on a dollar basis between two cars with different coe life unless you interpolate and include time value of money. So bottomline is that, car is an expense. You buy what you can write off. Those who borrow to write off, i can only say "duh". Those who insist if they borrow, they can make better use of the money, i say, perhaps but its a different risk taken. Those who say they cant buy a car unless they borrow, i advise you not to buy a car, period. At the end of the day, there are cars at $20k, $30k, $50k etc.... Most of the time Singapore lang buy a car to feed their own ego, so no need to lie about that. If at the end of the day, i am wrong, please pardon me. So whats your story? Is that contributing to the official statistic that 70% of Porsches ever built are still on the road today? very good point made... i can only afford cheap jap car.. no luck for porsche in singapore.. haha
Quantum 5th Gear October 18, 2014 Share October 18, 2014 Fortunately roads conditions are not bad here. Wear n tear is slower than some other countries. Replacement of shocks, bearings, clutch, pads, rotors etc are part n parcel of owning older cars as these items are considered consumables to me. Different mindset from others who change their cars every 3, 4 to avoid such inevitable replacement costs. I have used a gearbox for 23 years and it's still going strong, an old school manual box. Agreed with you that if the owner needs to use his car uninterrupted, workshop time is no no. Fortunately for me a day or two without the use of my car seems to work fine with me. Different circumstances. My time is inexpensive also. :-) for COE cars, mechanically it's not problem as long as replaced wear and tear parts, only concern of 10 years ago car, its safety feature, electronic accessories etc, should be much outdated, such as number of airbags, traction control, touch screen, keyless, etc,

Not just you. I am sure there are others who will share the same sentiments as you. I am one of them. I like manual transmission cars but it is getting hard to find new cars these days equipped with one. I felt more in control with a MT car as compared to an AT version. Plus, the manual transmission has been proven over time and reliable so long as care and servicing is accorded to them and the car at the stipulated intervals. COEed cars are ok to own if you choose the right one :-) Uncle, where to find COEed cars these days? They are probably getting lesser and lesser. This of course doesn't mean it's as safe as a modern car, but for low cost motoring it gives me, I just drive as safe as I could and give lots of margin for errors.
