the crux is not the real margin. it is not in my concern :a-happy:

it's how much we know that we are paying over the cost of the car, and whether we are willing to do that.

i get a feeling that many folks look at affordability and willingness to pay based on the price quantum, depreciation or the monthly instalment. But if they know an additional factor, which is the gross margin, i feel it will affect their buying decision.

everyone has a certain level of tolerance of premium but i'm sure no one likes to be carroted [:p]

it's like if you know a can of coke can be had for $1, i think $1.50 you will still pay lah cos its only a slight premium in absolute terms, but will you pay $4 for the same can of coke?

Or would you rather spend that $4 on a different drink that you feel is more worth it (like not easily available elsewhere, more "exotic" etc)?

Similarly, if you shortlisted 2 cars that you like almost equally, car A cost 250k but the margin earned is 80k, would you veer towards car B that cost 250k with 60k margin?

some will still go for Car A but it will mean that they have considered all factors and are willing to go for it, so we respect that choice but some will benefit with the additional knowledge of margins paid so that they can be sure they made the right choice.

For branded goods, the more expensive and exclusive, the more desirable. ie. high end watches and bags. So not every consumers prioritize margin in their buying decisions.

I shipped my car back from the UK, an E220D W213.

So far I have clocked 2500km on the road during the last 4 weeks, and loving every moment of it.

The interior feels small despite the exterior size. The engine is creamy smooth, and quiet; don't sound like a diesel engine at all. The consumption is outstanding for such a big car, though not as good as what is claimed. But still good. 100% highway at 90 km/hr uses up 3.5l per 100km. 100% pure start stop around the neighborhood got me about 7l per 100km, average speed 18km/hr.

The gearbox is a gem. I like the glide mode, which disengages the gearbox during cruising with the accelerator disengaged. What irritates me is that the car automatically go back to comfort mode and auto start/stop active mode by default after stopping the engine for a while. I never got to see gear 9, it was at 8 when cruising at 120km/hr on the NSHW.

As for all the other features, I am still trying to get the hand of it. I only got the radio, and bluetooth part understood so far. Have not tried the autopark yet. Internet access does not work, and frankly it is useless.

The car autobraked a few time when it detected i was too close to the central divider on the NSHW, and when cars were too close at the causeway jam. It was scary the first time it happened, but I kind of know when it will happen now so not so scary.

I was trying to buy the oil filter for the car in singapore, but no luck so far. Perhaps I have been looking at the wrong shops. I still cannot find the location of the dipstick or oil filter the in the engine compartment. I can read the engine oil and adblue level on the screen though. Maybe they have done away with dipsticks in this OM654 engine.

Early days , certainly this car is a keeper for me.

I bought the diesel as they dont sell the petrol version in the UK. No regrets. The E200 would not have been as perky as this 400nm torque machine.

What are the total cost involved in shipping the car back?

I paid full retail price for the car in the UK. You can get pricing info on the UK merc website. You have to be able to claim back VAT to make the numbers worthwhile. Shipping and insurance back to sgp port is less than 1k pounds, it cost me less to ship all the way from UK to singapore than to get the car out of the PSA port to my workshop. Go figure. All the other cost, u can simulate on LTA website, depending on ur coe assumption. I save enuf to get a very substantial discount for my COE when compared to PI pricing.

I did not import the car to save money. I booked it the moment it was launched in the UK early 2016. Because of the pound's drop after brexit, I save significantly due to exchange rate. The car was on allocation then, and when delivered, there were some issues with it. I guess this is to be expected given that it is a brand new chassis platform, and a brand new engine platform. Merc would not deliver the car to me as they want to autopsy it, and I had to place a new order and wait all over again. At the end, I did not get to be the first W213 in Singapore. Lost the bragging right.  But at least I got a car with all the issues fixed. So far I have not seen any on the road in the north east of Singapore where I am most of the time.

Nice!

How long was the whole process from collection in UK until collection in SG?

U did all the paperwork yourself, i suppose?

Perhaps u may wanna share the contacts used so that some Bros can benefit from your experience too?

2 months from order to merc UK receiving and starting to PDI the car. If nothing wrong found at PDI, then about 3 weeks to delivery in the UK. One week logistics to ship, and then about 4 weeks on the ship. Once landed in Singapore, it took about 6 weeks all in. Cannot be rushed as the processes is sequential; especially all the agencies in Singapore who decides the car's fate.

I wont publish the details on what to do for many reasons and none selfish, but anyone really keen can PM me. All I can say is that any bro who want to try it must have stomach for risk, patience to achieve the impossible, and the resourcefulness to find a solution when all the required boundary conditions to be met, results in a null set. I guess if you are in the trade, you can get those things done. But as an individual, it was almost impossible for me. For the moment, until the diesel car policies are clarified, I would suggest that you hold your horses.

Did you managed to save more than 30k from the PI quoted prices?

If so, itz like more than 60k difference from C&C. Worth a punt for those who are not risk averse.

What's the adoption fee by C&C now? 20k? Still cheaper by quite a bit if you are forced to stump up this amount......

Saved closer to 40$k as compared to pi. Adoption fee at c n c is 10$k. So it works i guess.

Anyway, this thread is about the car, not self import. Ask me the car how lah! Want to gush happiness and how lian also cannot. :)
