Stop-Start Systems

I don't like the surge either when stopping at traffic light. I find it difficult to lock down any specific data/report how much petrol such a system realistically save me.

I have ever from a passerby point of view seen (and hear) a diesel volvo S40 with lady driver trying to park..... she took multiple points adjustment just to get into the lot... all the while the engine is being stopped and restart..stop and restart..stop and restart with every adjustment... :D Gosh ...the amount of fine particulate generated.....I pity Mother Nature.... <_<

I pity the spark plugs.

we all at one point in our driving "career" hated seat belt.

today if I drive without seatbelt I feel like what chryst would feel when she goes out without wearing a bra.

No ley not me. I quite used to the security the belt gives especially when braking hard to a stop and the belt holds me back.

Anyway if any of you don’t wear and belt and get into an accident, please make sure you stay in the car and don’t fly out and dent my car and mess up my paint work! Best is fly into a drain. Makes the wash up easier too. Hahah.

Ya. Volvo one seems to stop very fast. Once the car stop, the engine stop also. I walk my son to school and always encounter this volvo queuing to go in to the school and the ASS was working really hard. Every time she inch forward, the car starts then stops.

On rainy days when I drive my son to school instead and need to get into the queue to go in, I look for that Volvo. Cuz it can't move off fast unless the driver lets it keep on creeping.

Is there more particulate emissions when stopping and restarting than during normal running? I didn't know that.

I think Start Stop do save some fuel.

UK LTA Carens Diesel with ISG reported 127g/km

SG LTA Carens Diesel without ISG reported 135g/km

A difference of 8g per km.  6% Saving

Assuming CO2 constitute half of the emission with the other half as Water.

Then hor we are expecting 3% saving.

Assume you use 1500ltr of Diesel per year, you save about 45 ltr per year lor

Diesel engines don't use spark plugs :XD:

You got me there. Frankly I don't have scientific proof but it's based on rudimentary assumption that engine is the most inefficient when being started up where the combustion of the air fuel mixture/temperature are not the most efficient.

Doubt that emission would be worse. Engine is already hot and catalytic converters are at proper temp too. The engine is most efficient at its hot operating temp.

Which is why during cold start up, all engines try very much to increase revs and inject more fuel to heat everything to operating temp ASAP.

Contrary to popular belief that a cooler engine is better. Which is why old school uneducated mechanics always loved to remove to thermostat, thinking colder is better.

10years save 450l. And with diesel at $1.2? That’s $540. Hardly enough to cover any repairs should the starter or battery die faster vs a non stop start system.

Stop starts are primarily meant to beat emission tests. In order to drop to a better tax band in all countries.

That's why I don't bother with stationary warm-up.

Start engine, on lalio and move off.

Key word here is operating temperature.

think hybrid electric system is better, just switch to electric engine...

No need all the way to hybrid.

New gen of cars will have mild hybrid where starter and alternator is combined.

Same. I just don't ram the accelerator till it reaches operating temperature.

Haha.. similar to what I saw some time back , but in a Mazda 3.

This uncle I saw at Pioneer Mall was taking more time than some of us would, trying to park into the lot. And it seemed to me that he either was not familiar with that car, or with automatic transmission altogether. He was looking down at the gear lever every time shifted from D to R and back.

And so, the engine started, and stopped, and started, and stopped, and started, and stopped... Until I lost count haha

Similar to Subaru. After getting use to the control depression of the brake pedal, i can avoid triggering the start-stop throughout the whole tank of petrol. Agree that this feature is useless in Singapore.

Is it safe for me to that you shift between D and R and back without stopping your car completely? :)

Agree. I just need a simple point A to B car without ASS complexity. What current models are available on the market that are ASS-less?
