so then, does made in japan = japan R&D + japan QC system manufactured parts from various awarded subcon in various countries + ship back japan for final assembly?

understand the need to source for cheaper manufacturing / labor. so now doesn't matter made where - we're just buyin based on our past experience / believe in certain brands i suppose?

understood. in fact, becos of airbag issues, i should stop shortlisting jap cars. however, when i compare what is the greater evil, i avoided vw all the way until i'm proven wrong. no worries bro, asking such a qn doesn't mean i'm gonna shortlist vw. it's just for my knowledge seeking.

side note, gotta admit vw interior fit n finish still good, post-ownership rattling notwithstanding.

On air bags , this is a issue originating from a supplier distinct from the manufacturer itself. Not a case of a dishonest culture within the manufacturer (they may not know what was happening at their suppliers) Edited by EricChan

The VW DSG dry clutch DQ200 for the 7 speed is the one infamous is made by LuK not Borg Warner. Mechatronic didn’t corrode. The mechatronic

failed due to heat dissipation problems and fluid selection issues.

Did you just make this up?

that's 5+2

5 forward gear + 2 reverse gear

So comparing on the same platform against the VW Audi and BMW, that's 5 speed.

sorry bro... that's a downgrade.

Are you referring to 5G-Tronics...that is 5 forward+2 reverse gear.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_5G-Tronic_transmission

For 7G-Tronics, 7 forward+2 reverse, refer to here...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_7G-Tronic_transmission

For 9G-Tronics, 9 forward+2 reverse gear, refer to Page 28 here..

Can see this E350 hit 240+kmh with 9th gear.

Lol... read the website carefully.

Then there's another person rushing in to say DQ200 the dry clutch for dsg 7 made by borg warner.

I'm tickled from reading these.

To those who know it. Now you know why. You know who you are. Lol...

ur point noted bro. but the probability of experiencing the effects of a faulty gearbox is higher than defective airbag activating locally (touchwood) from my limited knowledge / awareness..

Just saying...

Takata and Honda Kept Quiet on Study That Questioned Airbag Propellant

This one kills people and yet some forumers here are indifference compared to the endless ruckus over the non-lethal (and fixed) dsg issue.

人命關天- definitely a single serious injury is a tragedy that is totally unacceptable and must be condemned and criminals punished never mind the loss of a person's life.

My point is the car manufacturer is the customer of the supplier just like a car buyer is the customer of the manufacturer. Does the manufacturer as the customer of the supplier knows everything about the supplier product safety, quality, reliability (do we)? The answer is both yes to some degree and no because it depends on the information and tests that the supplier made available to the manufacturer .

If the supplier is dishonest about the performance of the product, does it means the manufacturer is dishonest too?

Yes if the manufacturer knows for certain and then ignores it, covers up or goes along with it.

But what if he suspects but the tests to confirm are not that conclusive, does it makes him dishonest ?

So if a man commits a crime , does it make his son a criminal and guilty of and a party to the crime as well, if the son was unaware or only suspected that his father had committed a crime? Does the son disown his father (manufacturer breaks off his contract) or does he keep quiet and investigate further or accuse the supplier (father) at this stage ? See the point ?

You will find that someone who cheats on fuel consumption cannot be simply trusted not to have taken a short cut on other areas. Such as in reliability, quality control, teething problems .

In my opinion, this is also an issue of integrity and/or ethics.

Well just saying isn't the dsg designed and made by another manufacturer?

From the article it seems like takata and Honda knew about problem but hide it until things blew wide open. Is this any different to vw trying to deny the issue until the issue has been brought to worldwide attention?

Just saying...can we ever trust Honda cars now since they kept quiet about things that can potential kill you?

Wonder why it is so hush quiet on this "killer" issue here compared to the huge amount of noise generated by the dsg issue?

I think the difference is here Honda largely suspect there is a supplier problem and tried to do tests to work with the supplier and to conclusively confirm (and engaging supplier plus outsider lab in the process) .

Whereas VW case is they knowingly and intentionally went about to cheat ( on the emission), so then the question is since they are less than ethical on this , what else are they willing to take compromises on their and their suppliers' design, production, reliability and quality ?

Becos "it seemed" takata n honda knew about the issue, but didnt confirm they knew the issue. Anyway, if either or both r charged n made to compensate, we will comment accordingly.

Another issue is the dsg probably affected much more owners locally n possibly worldwide, whereas locally i didnt read about airbag related news, nir any local car forum has such feedback. Naturally, more discussions will b on dsg n vw.

Imagine ur ride keeps acting up when compared to ur previous, how would u feel.

Yes, one intentionally lied to cheat (the authority) but has limited impact on buyers. The other kept quiet about things that can potentially kill the buyers.

I can straight away tell which one is worse. You can't?

must you be so condescending and refuse to say things without adding some sort of proof?

For your sake I will at least verify your statement about DQ200 being made by LuK.

http://ae-plus.com/technology/luk-slims-down-its-dual-clutches

It does say that LuK supplies the dual-clutch pack for DQ200, but it seems other sources suggest that DQ200 is engineered by VW as a derivative of DQ250, which is the original "BorgWarner DSG". I cannot find any information that suggests the entire DQ200 is supplied by LuK.

Be a discerning consumer and make your due diligence, not a hater nor a fanboy. As a brand new Audi A3 owner I can understand your reaction
