Past years history have already proven every years the coe value is dropped by about 15k for each following year, minus away the noise. It is those that couldnt afford or not willing to pay that keep hopng there is miracle like crisis to drop even further. If based on norm, this year lowest coe value will be around 35k to 40k (assuming lowest for last yr is 50k w/o noise) unless intervention come in

The $38k COE already here in Feb.. Question is will it be back this year..

Maybe... i smell recession liao...... construction sector axing ppl liao. Retail quieter also.... market mood no good liao.

But ppl still need to replace cars. Demand will still be there. Maybe slightly lesser but not like 30k coe anymore

That is what i classified 38k coe as noise. How many time do we see 10k drop in coe in a single bidding? If it is extraordinary, we dont benchmark from it. Expert don't base on 1 time noise to become the norm for in Forecasting/prediction.

In 2014, those who brought were those whose COE were expiring in 2014.

In 2015, those who brought were those whose COE were expiring in 2015 and 2016

In 2016, those who brought were those whose COE were expiring in 2016, 2017 and 2018 plus Uber, SMRT

Come 2017 (ending of peak COE supply), those who buy will be those COE expiring in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 plus maybe Comfort, SMRT, Transcab etc.

Hence, COE will remain high

Mine old expires on 2017 and I got my new in 2016. You are right.

Most car buyers are discerning and prudent and they will only buy a new car in one of the following circumstances:

  1. Their existing car's COE is expiring soon; or
  2. They perceive that COE price has reached or near its bottom

otherwise they will continue to hold on to their existing cars.

That is the reason why for the past few years, most of the buyers are replacement buyers whose car's COE were expiring in that year or next while others adopt a wait-and-see.

The COE supply is expected to peak around 2018 and those waiting at the sidelines may start to rush in to buy in 2017/ 2018, including those whose cars are around 4 to 8 years old cos they do not want to be caught in a situation when COE supply diminishes again. If all these buyers like a tsunami start rushing into the market in 2017, it will be difficult for the COE price to drop even with the increase in the number of COEs.

Just my 2 cents.

And I have never encountered any living soul who previously owned a car and has now gone driverless (without a car).

I have a few colleagues who scrapped their cars, adjusted their lifestyle and just moved on to public transport and taxis. Especially those whose kids have grown up and money for car is now channeled towards higher education for kids.

Besides those who have sold their cars wouldn't be coming to MCF anymore to post....right? [:p]

I replaced my 9 year old car due to the fact that I could still get back more than 10k cash and use it to top up the cost of new car. The depreciation cost of the old car is about the same even if coe drops in a year later.

Your experience is news and an eye opener to me. I was under the impression that this is more difficult than kicking an addiction .. There are ppl I know who even borrowed money (don't know where) to renewed Coe.

And I refer to my relatives and friends and discounted everyone from mcf.

Sounds good. Look like 2017 is best time to buy car and car prices will be all time low.

Just that its used car and not new car.
