You are not wrong to say old has to move aside for new.

That said, for football; I feel its up to the coach to decide if the old player is still worth selecting. So if I'm an old player, I won't officially announce I'm not available for selection anymore but let natural process to take place ie if coach decides not to choose me anymore, I'll accept it but I'll never say I'm not playing anymore for my country.

Actually old is not the main criteria to move. It should be form/performance/results. Buffon is 38 and he's still the best choice in goal for Italy. Dino Zoff, Pat Jennings were all also very old when they last played, and nobody complained. In case got protest that goalies are different, Roger Milla was the oldest striker and scorer at world cup. Pirlo was still the best choice playmaker until recently. If they are still playing well, they should still play even if old.

In the case of Rooney, the problem is that he's not playing well, and there are others who have been playing better in the last 2 years, so not selecting him is due to form/performance/results - and not age. In England's case, it's complicated becos as long as he's available, the Manager seems obliged to select him...

Totally agree with you on age and yes Buffon still amongst the best goalies [thumbsup]

Like I said previously, selection is up to the National Coach. Rooney has made himself available which is to be respected, if the National Coach feels he still can contribute that it's not Rooney's fault if he is chosen. It's really anybody's guess if the National Coach is really beholden to Rooney so I won't dwell on this as no evidence to prove it one way or other.

Personally if I were National Coach, I would still choose Rooney as a squad member but not necessarily first X1 player. His experience can help the newcomers to settle down and he can contribute through his leadership as well. Admittedly, he didn't play well esp in the Iceland game but so too younger England colleagues like Kane whose free kicks n corners were a pale shadow of what we know he is capable of doing. Now I'm reading that the England players having a mental issue when they put on the 3 Lions shirt, not sure if this is an excuse but some food for thought!!

football and certain other sports are very competitive and cruel game - only the best will win.  more so telling than other domains and their players.  in the corporate, even the departure of demi-god like CEO is not telling in terms of the waning fortunes of the company as compared to sports games.  for example, when Steve Jobs passed away, Tim Cook and Apple didn't fare too badly.  because the successor can probably get by by continuing the work left by the predecessor without making too much changes and rocking the boat too much.

in sports games, if you field an out of form or mediocre player, or use an average ability manager, it will be very telling in the fortunes of the team especially if the team is previously a world beater.  think of how 2 times Euro and 1 time World Cup winner Spain came crashing down in the last 2 major tournaments.  England's case is slightly less obvious because they haven't been a world beater for the longest of time.  But still, I am also against their picking of players based on past reputation, ties (whether with the manager or the fans) and on individual ability (rather than a good fit to team strategy).  England has made these errors too often the most current example being the selection of Rooney who is out of form, has good past reputation but even then, also played out of position in this Euro.  Even with the selection of players on form, a good manager should not just shoehorn them into positions without regard to fit and strategy like the case of Gerrard and Lampard in the past.  It is clear both player's style make a bad case for being on the field together.  Yet, they have been fielded together because they are the 2 better midfielders England has.  A good manager should pick a style of play and strategy that maximizes the potential of his players.  Iceland players aren't exactly that great but the manager has done a very good job of using the right strategy formed on the basis of his best players.

Poland vs Portugal.

Not much to choose between a Pole and a Portugoose.

Probably end up a draw, followed by extra time and followed by penalties.

Pole won their last match by penalties against the swiss cheese.

This time round, will the Polish well drilled penalty takers repeat their story, or will they they slip up over goose shit?

I think the Pole will grind through somehow against Ronaldo & Co.

Just a random idiosnycratic thought which may by some chance happen. [idea]

Let's see how it unfold after 3.00 am past midnight.

Draw in 120mins. Ronaldo miss penalty and Poland win.

Then Ronaldo decided to quit from international duty

Great entertaining first half with attacking football from both sides.

Love the no nonsense slit passes from the polish side.

Good refereeing too.

Had a hunch when number 16 walked to take the kick. He didn't play well throughout the 120 mins.

Ronaldo missed kick so many times in this tournament...in fact, a fairly common sight in other games too. Ball issue or wind disturbance?
