Fitting Wider Tyres

Hi Guys

 

My current tyres spec is 21560r17. Looking ard for suitable replacement but not many options for the exact fit.

 

I could prob find more if i choose a wider tyre. Question is, is this possible and what will happen if i fit in wider ones.

Bro you asked same question in QQ chat.
I am one of the QQ change to 235/55x17 and it is totally fine. Some more the diameter of this size is same as 215 so it wouldn't affect the speedo reading.

changing the tire size is acceptable is conversion is a recommended one by vehicle maker or tire maker

For QQ case it is ok to put 235/55/17 instead of 215/60/17 and some one had  high lighted the overall diameter is same (so speedo meter reading is not affected )

MY view is If you original size is available so no reason size change ( some WS might just simply pushy because they do not have them in stock  )

putting 235/55/17 my concerned is can your currecnt take the wider tire? ( base on my technical research this 235/55/17 can mount on rim width from 6.5 to 8.5 inch

ideal width for 235/55/17 is 8inch

In Tyrepac, i found:

Both cost $212/pc

If going from 215 width to 235 width.

i assume u are changing rims also to at least 17 x 7.5 , or 17 x 8.??

 

if not the tyres wont fit nicely.

as what bro marcostan said, it is ok to change to wider tyre (as long as your rims follow appropriately) because will not affect speedo reading. It's only those that change to larger diameter wheel (rim + tyre) that must pay attention to more things like wheel well clearance etc.

 

But! do note that the handling of the car will change because suspension geometry changed due to wider rim (not so much of issue with a bread and butter car);

 

However, your fuel consumption would also be higher because got more rolling resistance due to wider tyre contact patch (a bit more issue with bread and butter car), though the increase wouldnt be SO significant.

 

in car, all parts of the car affect some other part in both big and small ways. as long as you dont push your car to the limits and drive normally, a bit of change here and there will be ok.

Do not, I repeat, do not use wider tyres n bigger rims unless yr car has sufficient torque.  wider means more rubber touching the tarmac, and increases FC, road noise, slower, difficulty in revving.  Some cases, tyre may even hit the inner fenders(front tyre) when you steer.

 

Wider tyres only can feel the benefit of stability if u drive like 150kph or above, where that extra cm helps.  If u dont drive up north, forget it.

 

Just follow maufacturer specs.  Been there done that.

using wider tyres dun mean more contact surface , or more grip.

 

it only change pattern of the contact surface. example. rectangular to square. or to rectangular another direction.

 

wat it does improve is the corner stability. cos of the width .

 

but the result of lower profile tyres mean a more bouncy ride. more often then not. it decrease the grip, instead of improveing it.

 

f1 is a great example. see their tyres where got low profile. ( they still testing)

 

if talking about grip, low profile mean more 'chio' , nothing else.

I didn't know buying a tires lots of thing to consider

so if you worry

Follow what is fitted originally (from Car manufacturers)

Or optional tire size from your car manufacturers recommendation (check this info from your car owners manual or Label on your car) 

to me

bigger is not necessary better

speedo meter reading is not everything

Quality is the most important and my priority
