yeah ... this is a little trick the sales always use. Esp 2nd hand cars .... Last time no internet no MCF. My first car I was duped ... bought a f*cking lemon.

But there are also indeed honest ones lah. A SE from a 2nd hand dealership actually taught me how to spot resprays and possible accident cars when I didn't buy from him. He even let test drove me around in a GTti !

resprays are easy to spot. accidents for front end also not too tough. its the rear end where they do a cut off at the C-pillar section to replace the whole rear section that is more tricky to spot as there is much less metal area for you to spot the welding marks.

something like this.

Not sure ... Anyway, happy family, happy life .. Dont want to chiong with them ..Dont mind Jap Brand since quite easy to find spare parts .. haha

Sure, Japanese cars are good but I have a safety concern if they are too small.

In SG it may be difficult to make out much from showroom visit and short 5-15 minutes of test drive.

Hence, always check out the youtube overseas reviews of the car.

This is because the reviewers have ample time to carefully examine the real-life use of car. You don't have to agree with the views of the reviewers, but important to take note of their observations, which you can also try to test for yourself while in the SG showroom.

For me, I just buy a car I feel comfortable with. Comfortable in terms of looks (exterior, interior), car brand, costs (upfront and running).

It’s been almost 6 months since I first started driving with my first car, and I must say the running costs adds up to be more than the cost of my car....

My approximate monthly running costs:

Petrol - $200

Carpark - $250

Insurance - $140

Maintainence - $100

Road tax - $60

Total - $750!!!

Means in 10 years, I would probably need to spend at least $750 times 12 months times 10 years - $90k -> more than the cost of the car.....

Japanese have big cars , likewise European brands have small car too.

Add financing (or what you could have done with the money used to buy the car, let say 3K returns on 100K car), plus another 90K depreciation (Assuming 10K PARF), the total would be 210K over 10 years.

The country definitely salutes you for your contribution to nation building.

Dont count or else you will give up driving in the end. But think about it, you enjoy some private space and time when you are driving, and having the convenience of going to places you like, anywhere, anytime.

I booked my test drive.

Test drove the car on the scheduled day.

Listened to SE blah blah blah . . asked a few questions.

Nod head and signed on dotted line.

One hour it took.  [laugh]

But of course many hours of research and watching you tube review videos prior to seeing SE.

Neutral Newbie

Is it possible to buy a car without sending a mechanic to inspect it? Found 6 steps to buy online on iol.co.za. Is this enough? Do you need to go yourself or send someone for a test drive? It costs money to check each car, I don't want to waste every time.

Also, what service do you prefer as a vin decoder? It advise VinDocs and CarFax. Which should I use?
