you seem very well versed in roof racks especially for bike carrying.

I have been trying to find out, how easy (or difficult) is it to lift the bikes onto the racks? I assume there is some special method?

for sedans/wagons, the height of the car roof racks I also envisage some problems (more worried about the bikes accidentally denting or scatching the car) if we lose concentration while mounting the bikes. SUVs  with the increased height I assume will be even harder!

No, not well versed, just used to cycle a lot and everywhere in the past when my kids are still kids.

As Bro therock mentioned, initially when i start, i do prepare a stool.

But once you are familiar how to lock the bike on the carrier, one hand operation is possible, even without any stepper.

Dont worry, normal height adult should be ok.

Unless existing car is very tall like starex/alphard/triplets (Voxy, Noah, Esquire), old fortunner, prado etc.

Be careful with the bike pedals, yes can scratch cars, dent unlikely, bicycle tyres not so easy to dent the roof.

However, for securing the bikes in the middle row (eg 3 bike carriers), may not be so easy. What i do is to park temporarily near a kerb to gain some height. Same with unloading, stop near a kerb first.

1st of all, can you lift your bike above your head on the floor?  If yes, no issue.

Just get a folding ladder to do the job.  Folding ladder is more stable.

I have been watching how ez to pack bike with this:

on to the roof of Merc Vito.

An average non carbon fibre bike under 2k will weigh about 7-10kg..

One must be able to lift it cleanly, or risk scratching the car...

I am getting old, so I use a stool...

YMMV

Non carbon bike under 2k will weigh at least 10kg.

My Cannondale CAAD10 already weigh 7.7kg.

Ability to lift has nothing to do with age unless it is an untrain muscle.
