285/25 or 265/30 for a 22" 9.5J rim

Need some advice regarding tires.

 

I have the 2 tire size options, either a 285/25 or 265/30.

 

285/25 has only a 1% difference to my current wheels overall diameter but due to the low profile, load rating is only 95 (690kg)

 

265/30 has only a 3% difference to my current wheels overall diameter but due to the higher profile/sidewall, load rating is 97 (730kg)

 

Is 285 too wide for a 9.5J rim? I'm going to fit this on a 2ton MPV so not sure if load rating 95 is going to cut it.

Check the min load rating for your vehicle.

 

If you tend to drive f&f, take the 285/25.

my mpv is "only" 1.8 ton kerb weight and it is already specced with load rating 98 XL tires

 

on a separate note, i cannot imagine what your FC would be like on 22" rims....3-4km/l?

On the contrary, I have these wheels on my SUV now. Before upsizing, I was having 8km/L. After upsize, I'm getting 7.5km/L

 

This is still acceptable to me. I have driven worst at 7km/L on previous cars.

 

I did check the Gross Vehicle Weight of my MPV which is at 2600kg. Assuming load rating 95 is 690kg which makes a total of 2760kg. This is 160kg more than the max rating of the vehicle. Only issue is I'm not sure how 285 will sit on a 9.5J rim

could only find one tire for 285/25/R22. which is pirelli. seems that 265/30/R22 is an exact fit. 285 needs a 10.5 in wheel. 285/25 might be too thin to allow a range of rims widths. it states only 10.5 and nothing else

Think you are wrong.

 

Gross is the weight rating

 

Curb weight is weight of the car without passengers. My MPV is rated at 2075kg. Lets give it 2100kg which means I'm left with 500kg to the max rating of 2600kg. Makes me wonder how 500kg can accommodate 7 person....

 

285 definitely too wide for your 9.5 inch

265 is just acceptable to me

I have been using this rim for years so quality should not be an issue.

How many ponies does your 2 ton MPV have? If nothing more than 250 horse.. go for 265/30-22 which is just nice wide enough to wrap 9.5j rims. 285 maybe the tyres will bear hug the rims?

I dont know what MPV you drive but 25 profile tyres would be quite harsh on SG roads I think.

 

Rule of thumb for tyre width to rim width is just take rim width x 25.4 (1 inch is 25.4mm) and the wheel should be at least as wide as the rim.

Actually 285 should fit into a 9.5jj rims. I had 275 on a 9.5jj it looks pretty ok, but it about the max it can go. Am on 19" thou. 1 of the tyre shop had made mistake before by installing my 275/30 tyres on my 8.5jj front rims. And it fits.. Just look a little fatter.

Btw, am on staggered setup

I used 265cm on a 9.5J rim before, but it was a 19 inch rim.

 

I think you could go up to 285 on a 9.5J but what for?
