For Hong Kong movies I only go for 杜琪峰 directed movies. E.g.. PTU

Recently just watched a latest from John Woo. Super cheesy dialogue and waste of eyes power.

Unless you are a super fan of flying in mid air with bullets spraying from a pistol, save the world, save more electricity.

Creatively, John Woo's peaked in 1987. After that, just $$$.

One of my favourite. All events took place within one night. The Cantonese version still better.

Same like PTU.

HK nowadays too many ugly and unreal CG. Cannot make it.

Last time they depended on real brawn.

Now, they just take the easy way out and try to be artistic when they are not.

Infernal Affairs trilogy is probably one of the lasts of the best in HK film history.

The first Project A and Police Story with Maggie Cheung were quite entertaining and novel at the time of release. Can still see the passion in doing own stunts and carefully choreographed action scenes.

倩女幽魂 is a classic hard to surpass even by the director and producer. Again, the same pair created ‎笑傲江湖 which set new standards for Wuxia choreography that became Ching SIu-Tung's signature that would later become too much.

For mainstream HK movies, I would categorise them into the 粵語片-era up till mid 60's, the Shaw and Cathay-era, the post 80's (Golden Harvest,  Cinema City and D&B peak era) and then the post-1997.

Much of the discussion seems to be from the 1980s. Post 80's new wave directors - Tsui Hark, Ann Hui, Patrick Tam, Mabel Cheung etc. started the  modern style.

My own most impressionable HK movies from the 80's:

鬼打鬼 - Dir: Sammo Hung, sets precedence for HK vampire movies (GH)

鬼馬智多星 - Dir: Tsui Hark (CC)

投奔怒海 - Dir: Ann Hui, very Ann-style realism and no happy ending

烈火青春 - Dir: Patrick Tam, mentor of Wong Kar Wai - starring 夏文夕  )

A計畫 - DIr: Jackie Chan (GH)

最佳拍檔 - Dir: Eric Tsang (CC)

英雄本色 - Dir: John Woo (CC)

秋天的童話 - Dir: Mabel Cheung (D&B)

倩女幽魂 - Dir: Ching Siu-Tung (CC)

Next time then talk about 90's.

We should not forget about the Hui brothers for the contributions to HK movie industries in the 70s and 80s.

Kung-fu and martial arts theme begin to flourish, mainly all thanks to Bruce Lee in the 70s.
