One of the most interesting things we did for our recent Hong Kong trip was to join the queue at Jenny Bakery (Tsim Sha Tsui) branch, for the famous cookies. We stayed at a nearby hotel (Hotel Panorama), so the bakery was about a 5 minute walk away. After checking in at our hotel, we went out for a walk. Made our way to the bakery and we were confronted with this line. Seeing is believing. And the weather was really hot! They were standing in the sun. Went inside to check out the store. This place accepts cash only. Be prepared to know exactly what to order. The staff will rush you, understandably so because there is a non-stop line! We returned to the place later in the evening and managed to buy some cookies. Here is our experience. Were the cookies good? Yes, very. Kids loved it. Adults loved it. We bought a few small tins back to give friends and they really loved it. Would we buy again? Yes, but we will go close to closing time, when the line is much shorter and at least you don't have to wait in the sun. It was really hot earlier in the day, and you could see the people in the queue were rather uncomfortable!

Source: https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/super-typhoon-lashes-hong-kong-with-hurricane-force-winds-and-heavy-rain HONG KONG - Super Typhoon Ragasa, the world’s most powerful tropical cyclone this year, lashed Hong Kong with hurricane-force winds and torrential rain on Sept 24 as the city shut down and more than 700 flights were cancelled. Roads were deserted as authorities instructed people to stay indoors and surging waves topped over parts of the Asian financial hub’s eastern and southern shoreline. “Areas which were previously sheltered may become exposed...seas will be phenomenal with swells,” the observatory said. Packing hurricane-force winds of up to 200kmh, Ragasa will be closest to Hong Kong early on the morning of Sept 24, skirting around 100km to the south of the territory. It is expected to maintain super typhoon intensity as it edges closer to the coast of China’s Guangdong province, home to more than 125 million people, where it is expected to make landfall from midday to late Sept 25. Ragasa swept through the northern Philippines on Sept 22 and Taiwan on Sept 23. The typhoon sparked panic buying this week, with people piling into supermarkets, leaving little on the shelves and in some cases queuing for hours to purchase goods amid fears that shops could be closed for two days. As the typhoon approached, residents across the city taped their windows in the hope of minimising any danger from shattered glass. Hong Kong issued the typhoon signal 10 - its highest - late on Sept 23, which urges most businesses and transport services to shut down. Authorities also issued the Amber rainstorm signal, expecting heavy rain to continue, with some streets already partially flooded, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP). Authorities have warned of rising sea levels, saying they could be similar to those seen during Typhoon Hato in 2017 and Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018, both of which caused billions of dollars in damage. “The water level will reach the maximum around noon, generally to around 4 metres,” the observatory said. A woman and her five-year-old son were swept into the ocean on Sept 23 after watching the typhoon from the waterfront, according to the SCMP, which said they are now in intensive care after being rescued. The financial hub has already opened 49 temporary shelters in various districts and 727 people have sought refuge at the shelters. Hong Kong’s Stock Exchange will remain open. It changed its policy late last year to continue trading whatever the weather. Ragasa will maintain super typhoon intensity as it edges closer to the coast of Guangdong, mainland China and Taiwan, after sweeping through the northern Philippines on Sept 22. It is expected to make landfall along Guangdong's coast from on Sept 24 midday till late. Guangdong authorities evacuated over 770,000 people, state broadcaster CCTV said. In the gambling hub of Macau next to Hong Kong, authorities issued the No 10 warning signal at 5.30am on Sept 24.

23 years on, Infernal Affairs remains the best gangster movie I've watched
jeresinex posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
TL;DR It's over two decades old, but Infernal Affairs remains THE gangster trilogy. *SPOILERS AHEAD* *SPOILERS AHEAD* *SPOILERS AHEAD* The Hong Kong Police and a triad have placed moles in each other's ranks. Tony Leung is Chan Wing Yan, an undercover cop desperate to leave his assignment. The antagonist is Senior Inspector Lau Kin Ming (Andy Lau), a decorated policeman who is actually a mole for Hon Sam (Eric Tsang), a triad boss. It's a game of cat-and-mouse, with policemen and gangsters trying to uncover the moles before their opponents do. Setting the stage Infernal Affairs is a trilogy. To me, it requires three movies to finish telling the story. Infernal Affairs is the main story, but it needs Infernal Affairs 2 for context. It explains the characters' history and the events that shaped them. Others complain that Infernal Affairs 3 is "bad". It is not. It brings closure to the tale. Without it, the villain never gets his comeuppance. In this context, Infernal Affairs 3 is neither short on emotionality nor poignant moments. I have watched the trilogy at least five times, and after each viewing, I still learn something new. There are nuances and subtleties that can only be gleaned with each viewing. That is a hallmark of a well-told story. It's too much to cover all three movies in one post, so instead, I'm highlighting seven moments from the first film that I found unforgettable. 1) An unending assignment Wing Yan is ordered to undergo psychiatry sessions to deal with his anger-management issues or face jail time. Exasperated, he yells at SP Wong (Anthony Wong), reminding him that this assignment was originally three years, but it's been almost 10. Wing Yan lives a double life: As a gangster, the police chase him. As a mole, gangsters are after him. It's unending psychological and emotional torture. Sam smashes open Wing Yan's cast 2) Tap... tap-tap... tap-tap-tap... During operations, Wing Yan and SP Wong communicate using morse code to avoid bugs and circumvent the fact that they can't call or text each other. As the deal between Sam and the Thai traffickers goes down, SP Wong stands with his eyes closed. At the triad hideout, Wing Yan stares pensively out the window. Our eyes are drawn to the cast on his arm. At the scene's climax, the police ambush Keung (Chapman To), one of Sam's henchmen, as he carries bags of cocaine ashore. Sam yells at him over the phone to dump them. The deal falls through. Sam glares at his men, his seething gaze an attempt to uncover the traitor. As Wing Yan begins to speak, Sam grabs his injured arm and smashes it on a table to shatter the cast, suspecting that it contains a bug. It's empty; Wing Yan's cover is intact. Later, we see the mic taped outside the grubby window he'd been staring out of. Nobody suspected his finger-tapping to be morse code. Kin Ming executes his boss 3) Betraying his boss One of the most brutal scenes in Infernal Affairs is when Kin Ming betrays Sam. The police ambush Sam in a multi-storey carpark and Sam flees on foot, desperation on his face. Sam calls Kin Ming. The sound of a ringing handphone pierces the silence, echoing off the concrete walls. Kin Ming appears and shoots Sam dead, revealing him as a two-faced, cold-blooded and remorseless killer who stops at nothing to get what he wants. Sam was a criminal, but he was also a father figure. But Kin Ming executed him without a second thought. 4) Keung was undercover, too Keung was shot and mortally wounded during the gun battle between the cops and the triads. He and Wing Yan flee. Behind the wheel, Keung grows visibly weaker. He loses control and crashes the car. Dying, he tells Wing Yan that Sam said, "Whoever didn't show up today was the mole. I didn't tell him you went for a massage." Keung was a loud and sometimes naive character. But the surprise is that he was a police mole, as confirmed by the news report in a subsequent scene. Mary makes a painful allusion to Kin Ming 5) Mary learns the truth Mary (Sammi Cheng) is Kin Ming's fiancé and a writer. Kin Ming comes home and sees Mary sitting on the steps, visibly upset. The sampler CD plays Forgotten Time by Tsai Chin. Suddenly, a recording of a conversation between Sam and King Ming plays. Mary says she can't finish her novel because she can't decide whether the main character is good or bad. Tearfully alluding to her fiancé, she says, "I think only he knows." 6) SP Wong dies Wing Yan's expression is priceless. In that moment, his whole world came crashing down – SP Wong is the last and only person in the department who knows Wing Yan's true identity as an undercover cop. It is a look of despondent horror. For the first time, his character knows not what to do. The iconic rooftop scene between the villain and the hero 7) Wing Yan dies Wing Yan arrested and handcuffed Kin Ming following their rooftop meeting, but suddenly, another policeman confronts them, gun drawn. Using Kin Ming as a shield, Wing Yan backs into the lift. But as he turns his head, he provides a small opening to the cop, who shoots him. It turns out the other cop is also a triad mole. The lift descends as gunshots ring out. The doors open to a bloody scene: The other mole also lies dead; Kin Ming shows his warrant card to the waiting policemen. There are many other moments in Infernal Affairs that are equally memorable, from the revelation that Wing Yan has a daughter to confessing to the psychiatrist that he's actually a policeman (it was painfully obvious he was serious but he pretended it was a joke) to Wing Yan's funeral. But these seven struck me the most and are ultimately the ones that made me eager to watch the next instalment. -
So my lil 'un is now a toddler and we are taking the meatball on a trip to HKG in November for five days. I will be meeting them in HKG after a work trip in China and rendezvous with them. Thus far we have booked the Hotel - AKVO hotel at Sheung Wan. Other than that, things are pretty open. I did do a search, but nothing similar came up and some of the threads are much older too.. So what I need help on please: - toddler friendly food places near Sheung Wan and attractions - toddler friendly attractions, bearing in mind the lil 'un still needs a small afternoon nap - places for wifey to shop that are also toddler friendly near Sheung Wan I'm not big on Disney and the queues are nuts, so it's ok not to go there... Maybe one larger excursion, eg the Peak? The outer new territories and such? I have three Octopus cards thanks to a friend. One more important thing is to go for a special dinner with the wife as our tin anniversary is coming up soon too so maybe something special yet kid friendly close to our hotel? Many thanks bros

https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/society/article/3182426/hong-kongs-iconic-jumbo-floating-restaurant-capsizes-south Hong Kong’s iconic Jumbo Floating Restaurant has capsized in the South China Sea, following its departure last Tuesday for a new home in an unannounced place, its owner has confirmed. In a statement on Monday, the Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises said: “On Saturday afternoon, it was passing Xisha Islands [Paracel Islands] in the South China Sea when the vessel encountered adverse conditions … [water entered the vessel] before it began to tip. “Despite the efforts of the towing company responsible for the trip to rescue the vessel, unfortunately it capsized on Sunday.” “The water depth at the scene is over 1,000 metres, making it extremely difficult to carry out salvage works,” it said, adding that it was “very saddened” by the incident and was seeking further information from the towing company. Tragic! End of an era for an icon and symbol of Hong Kong. It was never going to end well with the kinda condition it was in. Kitchen barge started sinking on 1st June after its announcement to depart Hong Kong. Singaporeans will say "Huat ah! Can claim insurance liao!"

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/asia/hong-kong-orders-hamster-cull-after-covid-19-hits-pets-2442871 The outbreak of Delta variant cases in humans linked to the shop worker prompted tests on hundreds of animals, with 11 hamsters showing up positive. That has brought a pet rodent clampdown on Chinese-ruled Hong Kong, which is following the mainland's zero-tolerance approach to COVID-19 even as much of the world shifts to living with it. The territory's Health Secretary Sophia Chan stressed at a news conference that there was no evidence domestic animals can pass the disease to humans, but authorities were anyway acting out of caution to ban imports and sales of pet rodents. Still living in the shadows of COVID-19, are we? Maybe we should start culling humans since we are the ones transmitting the virus. RIP my furry friends! Insert two cute hamsters below. ☹️

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/fully-vaccinated-travellers-can-travel-to-germany-and-back-without-serving-shn Fully vaccinated Singapore residents can travel to Germany and back without having to serve stay-home notices (SHN) from Sept 8. They will instead have to undergo four Covid-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, including one to be taken before the flight. It will be the first time residents can go for quarantine-free leisure travel since the Republic shuts its borders in March last year. The development comes after Singapore on Thursday (Aug 19) announced a new scheme in which it unilaterally opens it borders to vaccinated travellers from selected countries, starting with Germany and Brunei. With Germany already unilaterally opening its border to Singapore, those travelling on designated flights from Singapore will be able to fly to Germany and return without having to be quarantined. They will instead be subject to several Covid-19 tests and a short period of self-isolation, replacing quarantine requirements. TRAVEL AT YOUR OWN RISK.

We’re no strangers to street racing here in the United States. It’s an unfortunate eventuality of those wanting to live the Fast and Furious fantasy in the real world. However, no area is suffering from the dangerous past time more than Hong Kong, where 45 vehicles were recently intercepted on multiple reports of suspected street racing and illegal modification. Instead of moving the vehicles to an impound lot, the local authorities opted to simply block off a busy thoroughfare and park them there. We can’t be certain whether it was a flex to send a message – or simply the lack of a proportionately sized parking lot – but images of the fleet have blown up the internet. It’s a tremendous sight to see, but we’d be remiss not to mention the reasoning behind this automotive spectacle. Unfortunately, as is often the case, many residents living near the expressway had complained about the excessive noise being emitted by these luxurious and sporty vehicles. While some might just dismiss this as petty tenants who can’t afford opulent supercars, this is a different story altogether. To the uninitiated, the South China Morning Post reported that calls about street racing-related events rose by 40 percent in the first 11 months of 2020 – adding up to a total of 139 calls. Additionally, officers issued 222,905 fixed-penalty tickets and summons for speeding offenses in that same time period. Opinions aside, street racing is a very important issue that’s been addressed in very different ways around the world. Here in the states, we have a range of programs promoting uber-cheap run-what-you’ve-brung events at the drag strip. Regardless, it takes nothing away from the spectacle of over 40 cars being pulled over on a public highway. Source: https://www.motor1.com/news/490408/hong-kong-police-intercept-racing/

What would you do if money started falling from the sky? People walking along Fuk Wa Street in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong, witnessed the baffling sight of banknotes floating down from above on Saturday afternoon (Dec 15). Videos posted online suggest that the notes were thrown from the roof of a building, fluttering through the air before landing on the busy street below. Passers-by can be seen eagerly grabbing the notes, with some climbing on to the roof of the subway exit to pick up the banknotes. Photos on social media show that the notes were of the HK$100 (SG$17.60) denomination. One Facebook user appeared to have picked up at least six notes. Police were called to the scene after receiving reports of someone distributing money at Fuk Wa Street, and told people not to pick up the money, said South China Morning Post (SCMP). Officers collected around HK$5,000, according to the report. A live video on the Facebook page of Epoch Cryptocurrency that began at 2.42pm showed a man dressed in a black hoodie saying in Cantonese: "I hope everyone here will pay attention to this important event… (I) don't know whether any of you will believe money can fall from the sky." The man is believed to be the owner of Epoch Cryptocurrency, a Facebook page that promotes cryptocurrency. The man is widely known online as "Coin Young Master" and his real name is Wong Ching-kit, reported SCMP. Bowen Press said that the 24-year-old man refuted claims that he was behind the incident when interviewed at his home. However, Agence France-Presse (AFP) later reported that he was arrested on Sunday for causing disorder in a public place, after he drove back to the neighbourhood in his Lamborghini. Wong had said in a Facebook post that he wanted to “help the poor by robbing the rich”.

Hong Kong’s MTR trains disrupted for 6 hours, morning commute thrown into chaos Mass Transit Railway (MTR) train services in Hong Kong were disrupted for six hours during peak hour on Tuesday morning (Oct. 16) due to a signalling fault, throwing the morning commute for millions into chaos. The disruption was said to be “unprecedented” as three lines broke down at the same time. They were the Island, Tsuen Wan and Kwon Tong lines. The signalling fault was first reported at around 5.30am. But at 10.18 am, a fourth line — the Tseung Kwan O line — was also affected. Commuters were told to take other forms of public transport instead. For those who were already inside the stations at the lobbies, they proceeded to the platform in 10-minute intervals. But for some who could not wait any longer, they chose to jump over the railings and leave the stations instead. Train services started to resume at around 11.45am. After the breakdown, operating staff had to drive the trains manually. As a result of the manual operation, trains ran at a slower speed — 23km/h instead of the usual 60km/h. Best in the worldHong Kong’s MTR has been acknowledged as the best in the world. Well-known vlogger NAS Daily even did a video on the MTR, calling it the “World’s Best Metro”. He also cited the HK$1 million fine MTR has to pay if a train is late for more than 30 minutes as the reason why trains are on time for 99.9 per cent of the time in the city. I think Nas Daily is a jinx.

It's been a hectic 2017 , some had enjoyed much , some wished 2018 the new year would be better ! A short trip is indeed a refreshment to perk up your drive for the many days ahead. Hong Kong , a bustling city of people , culture , modernization with an intense blend of the old . A walk down the streets of Hong Kong is never dull albeit the old houses . Enjoy the walk of life through Hong Kong as I filmed the transition of Hong Kong from 2017 to it's new year 2018. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XETBVO7t48 Totally low powered after editing this film, which took 5 days of sightseeing and walking filming the scenes whenever I had the chance. As I took into my shock , I had more than 30 Gigabyte of 4K footage to edit and process. But it was pretty much satisfying to produce this short film as a remembrance for myself and my family to look back in the future. It is all memories. The new year also allows me to inject some spices into my old mediocre style of film production and I departed from my usual in this first 2018 new short film. Hope you ladies and gentlemen will enjoy !
