  1. Parents in Indonesia give toddler 5 glasses of coffee every day because they're too poor to buy milk https://www.asiaone.com/asia/parents-indonesia-give-toddler-5-glasses-coffee-every-day-because-theyre-too-poor-buy-milk?xtor=EREC-16-4[Emarsys_Newsletter]-20190919&extid=6934d0cfb7b252f1ae9f0dbddf5ff88ca8637e77 At first glance, Khadijah Haura looks just like any other toddler her age. At 2 years old, she is capable of walking on her own and actively plays to a point that her parents could not find the time to sleep. What sets her apart from many other kids, however, is that she has been consuming coffee instead of milk since she was 6 months old. Khadijah's parents, Sarifuddin and Anita -- residents of Tonro Lima village in Polewali Mandar, West Sulawesi, had no other choice but feed their daughter with five glasses, equal to 1.5 liters, of kopi tubruk, or brewed coffee. Anita and her husband, who worked as copra peelers, said they could not afford to buy milk given that their daily income of Rp 20,000 (S$2) could barely cover their expenses. "We can't do anything else. Our income is not enough to buy milk. We're forced to feed her coffee every day. She can't even sleep if she doesn't drink coffee; she'd cry asking for it before sleep," Anita told reporters at her house on Saturday, as reported by kompas.com. Both Anita and Sarifuddin said they solely relied on peeling copra for a living, besides helping lift rice from the fields during harvest season, through which they could earn some more money. On their lucky days, Anita and her husband could earn up to Rp 40,000 per day from peeling copra, but that was only if there were coconuts to be processed into copra. Otherwise, they would have to rest at home until there were enough coconuts to be processed. Anita couldn't help but express her concerns over her daughter's health, adding that she had never received milk or nutrition assistance from the local health agency. Polewali Mandar Health Agency's community health development head Mandaria Saleh said the agency had run a health check up on the toddler and found no abnormality in her growth and development. She noted, however, that the caffeine and sugar intake could harm the toddler in the long run. "We've asked the parents and the family of Khadijah not to continue with the coffee consumption. The health agency has distributed milk and complementary food assistance such as biscuits so that Khadijah could drink milk again and grow healthily like others her age," Mandaria said.
  2. https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/toddler-dies-after-mirror-falls-her-fashion-store-jewel-changi-airport SINGAPORE - An 18-month-old toddler died in hospital on Friday (Aug 23) after a standing mirror fell on her inside fashion store Urban Revivo at Jewel Changi Airport. A spokesman for Jewel Changi Airport said that the accident had occurred because a full-length mirror in the store had fallen and injured the child. Staff on-site administered first aid to the child while waiting for the paramedics to arrive. "We are working closely with the tenant to ascertain the details of the incident," said the spokesman. "Out of respect for the privacy of the family, we are unable to comment further." The Singapore Civil Defence Force said they responded to a medical incident at 78 Airport Boulevard at 12.33pm on Friday. Police said the child was unconscious when she was taken to Changi General Hospital, where she was subsequently pronounced dead. Police are investigating the unnatural death. According to Lianhe Wanbao, the child's family, believed to be tourists from China, collected her body from the morgue on Aug 24, accompanied by Jewel staff. PHOTO: LIANHE WANBAO Urban Revivo told The Straits Times it was "deeply saddened by the tragic accident" and that it was assisting the police with its investigations. Both the store and Jewel Changi Airport said they were in contact with the family of the child and supporting them through the difficult time. According to Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Wanbao, the child's family, believed to be tourists from China, collected her body from the morgue on Saturday morning, accompanied by Jewel staff. Pictures taken after the accident show the store was cordoned off and a sign was put up to inform customers it was "closed for stock take". According to its website, Urban Revivo is a Chinese fashion clothing store founded in 2006, with 200 stores in China and across the world, including Europe, North America and Japan. The store has three outlets in Singapore, including Jewel Changi Airport, Plaza Singapura and Raffles City. Several incidents have been reported at Jewel Changi Airport since it opened its doors in April. Read also Boy, 5, injured after slipper gets caught in Jewel Changi Airport's escalator On May 11, a five-year-old boy suffered a minor cut on his toe after his slipper was caught in an escalator. He was assessed by a doctor on the site after the incident. Three cases of injury were reported in June. On June 14, a woman injured her hand after tripping while walking on the sky nets attraction at Canopy Park. A 14-year-old girl required nine stitches on her face after she suffered a cut while playing at the Mirror Maze attraction at Canopy Park on June 19. 3. I came across this article about Ikea cabinets killing children in the US. Ikea USA issued a recall on it some time ago (now "relaunching" that recall). The recall for similar cabinets was extended to China but Ikea Singapore still claims it is safe to use in Singapore. Some questions come to mind: 1. How can the same item be unsafe in USA and China but safe in Singapore? Our children are made tougher than ang mo and PRC children? 2. Ikea Singapore says there are no incidents in Singapore except one from 10 years ago. Are they waiting for something to happen before they act? 3. People have been saying that consumer safety is lacking in China. Guess what, Singapore is worse! (at least in this case). Disclosure: have a toddler and ikea stuff at home
  4. Just watching Crash Test Dummies on Discovery Science. Shows how dummies are used to make cars safer. Made me recall seeing some adult front seat passengers in cars with a baby or toddler carried in their lap. They don't realise...(cannot be don't care right?) how dangerous it can be if the car rear ends the vehicle in front or driver e brakes....the child could be launched forward by the momentum and crash into the windscreen. Child seats are also life savers...i suggest parents be more strict with their children when it comes to seat belts. Even for short drive to school less than 2km away, I insist my kids put on their seat belts. You can be the safest driver in the world, but there are many who are reckless or bobo.
  5. The sad incident happened last year and the report on the ST report on the state coroner's findings was published two weeks ago. MCFers who are staying in old high-rise apartment do take serious note that some of the railing gaps may be wide enough for toddlers to squeeze through. In addition there might be stupid railing or parapet designs with horizontal bars/gaps which allows toddlers or children to climb over. From Straits Times: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...s-life-20130321 Toddler fell to death two months after maid saved his life Published on Mar 21, 2013 10:07 AM Twenty-one-month-old Eric fell to his death after squeezing through the bars of a balcony on the fourth floor of a condominium unit. -- ST PHOTO: SEAH KWANG PENG By Khushwant Singh LAST April, a toddler was saved as he was about to fall from a fourth-floor balcony. Two months later, he was not so lucky. Eric Wong Yu Hao, a year and nine months old, fell to his death after squeezing through the bars of the balcony at a Hillview Green condominium in Upper Bukit Timah. State Coroner Imran Abdul Hamid, while saying he found that the death was accidental yesterday, urged those who look after young children to check possible dangers in their homes and put in safety measures. He pointed out that there are online groups offering solutions to make homes safe. "While I don't think anyone can guarantee that the suggested solutions will be 100 per cent effective, at the very least caregivers can have the peace of mind that what could possibly be done to make the home safe for young children, has been done," he said.
  6. What a close call, thumbs up to the alert driver. For the parents, please take good care of the kids, can never be too careful! I see the video, I sweat... http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/singaporeseen/this-urban-jungle/alert-drivers-jam-on-their-brakes-after-toddler-dashes-on-to-road-at-ang-mo-kio Alert drivers jam on their brakes after toddler dashes on to road at Ang Mo Kio Posted on 07 September 2014 | 5,061 views | 6 comments More Sharing Services Stomper Brent and other drivers were forced to jam on their brakes after a toddler dashed onto the road at Ang Mo Kio at 12.38pm today (Sep 9). The drivers were taken aback as the kid ran onto the road out of the blue, but were alert enough to avoid hitting him. "I was so worried I kept honking and honking to alert both the kid and other drivers," said Brent. "I also steered my vehicle to block the car on the second lane from coming closer. "What a close one," exclaimed the Stomper.
  7. let me state that this is not a bashing nor a "who's fault" thread hor. i was shocked after watching the video and i'm now very consciously aware that not only should i watch out for adults, but also potentially toddlers dashing onto the road. before the usual "it's the stupid kid's fault, he deserve it" comments, i want to say that the little tod don't look more than 3-4 years old, i.e: their behaviour are led more by impulses and stimulus and very little on logic and consequence. for people who don't have personal experience with your own kids, please do some research on child development before you start commenting. this further strengthens my belief that there should be absolute discipline when it comes to roadside behaviour with my kid. hand-holding is a must when walking beside the road, traffic crossing, walking in carpark area.. etc. i do not hesitate to discipline with a smack if basic rules are not followed. i can't help but worry for those toddlers who are given a free rein when walking in areas with moving vehicles.

  10. It's only natural for today's children, even toddlers, to play with their parents' smartphones, at least so it seems. Even my 2-year old niece is used to playing her mother's iPad. Well, most of the time, nothing of a big deal would actually happen as she would only play games or watch some videos on the tablet. However, it seems that this toddler seen in the video is just one step ahead of other kids of her age in terms of being tech savvy. While playing with his Dad's smartphone, Sorella Stoute (a 13-month old toddler living in Portland, Oregon, America) happened to successfully place a bid - which she finally won - on eBay for a 1962 Austin Healey Sprite! When eBay sent the car to Paul Stoute, the toddler's father, he was all shocked as he had never even placed any bid on the '62 Austin. He also wrote to eBay mentioning that it was his daughter who accidentally placed that bid, which later caused the auction site to consider the previous highest bidder. However, when eBay mentioned that Paul's daughter had such an eye for a nice car, he changed his mind and borrowed some money from his family to pay for the car. Now, what Paul has in mind is to place the car as a gift for her daughter's 16th birthday. He has also set up a website from which people can donate some money to help him fix the car before her daughter finally reaches 16. One great thing about the car I'll have to say is that despite it being made back in 1962, it has almost no rust on it, at least that's what Paul noted on his website. For your information, though, the car would need its roof, brakes, transmission, and engine replaced if Paul really wants to give his daughter a working car on her 16th birthday. The car costs $225 in total and Stoute mentioned that it was lucky for him that his daughter didn't happen to buy the Porsche he was also looking at on the auction site before his daughter tampered with his smartphone. Had the 13-month old bought the Porsche instead, Stoute would have had to pay a total of $38,000! It seems that this is really going to be a good lesson to remind us never to leave our smartphones unattended. As for Stoute, he has now secured his smartphone with a new PIN and also a face recognition application. Seriously, how many toddlers can share their pride of having actually carried out online shopping successfully?! Photo credit: CBS News

  13. How on earth their child could be locked inside a car? Could it be they left their son who might be sleeping inside and went for makan session in Jalan Kayu? Or they left him temporarily inside the car to pack stuff inside the boot and the toddler then accidentally locked himself or what? Really puzzling... In any case, it was a big relieve that no harm was done to the kid. Given the sizzling weather we are having lately, it is unimaginable for a child to be trapped in a car under a open-air car park... From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_767409.html Locked in car 'My wife and I thank the people who stayed on to help.' MR LAWRENCE QUEK: 'On Feb 4, after dinner, my 19-month-old son accidentally locked himself in the car, with key inside, at the Jalan Kayu open carpark. While my wife and I tried to distract him so that he would not hurt himself, a few people came by and stayed with us to ensure that our son was safe. We eventually had to break the car window and retrieve the key. My wife and I thank the people who stayed on to help us.'
  14. Keeping little ones facing rearward and in their infant seats well past their first birthday, and perhaps into toddlerdom, will help keep them safe and sound. The conventional advice was that you should transition kids into a forward-facing seat at just one year. But based on new research and updated recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the new recommendation is that parents should keep toddlers in rear-facing car seats until age 2 or until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat. The decision follows a 2007 study from the journal, Injury Prevention, that first suggested rear-facing seats for children under the age of 2 bring a 75-percent lower chance of death or severe injury compared to front-facing seats. "A rear-facing child safety seat does a better job of supporting the head, neck and spine of infants and toddlers in a crash, because it distributes the force of the collision over the entire body," said Dr. Dennis Durbin, the lead author of the policy paper. According to Durbin, parents should wait until a child has fully outgrown the rear-facing seat before placing him or her in the booster seat. Depending on the child's relative size, some parents might want to make the transition to forward-facing seats before 2 years old, while others might wait even longer. Children should ride in a booster seat until they are 4'-9" tall and between 8 and 12 years of age, recommends the APP. In addition, kids should always ride in the back seat until they are at least 13 years old, and under no situation should a baby or child seat be placed in the front seat.

  16. Hi, I need some advices from drivers and parents who went to Australia... I will be travelling with my family and includes a 2year old toddler. I will be touring Sydney and thought of borrowing a car from a relative who lives in Sydney. Que: I need to bring in milk powder for my boy for his consumption. That is probably not a problem on the flight but how do I bring the powder past the Australian customs? Que: I also need to bring in medication for him, basic medication eg flu, fever, cough. Do I need to check them in or can I hand carry them? If so, do I need to declare or obtain pedi's letter? Que: If I were to borrow my relative's car to drive in Sydney, anything special I need to look out for? Also, is their parking in places of interest expensive? Que: I was told Australian police go down tough on drivers who drive without a childseat for their child. I have a childseat here in SGP but is there a way to rent the carseat in Australia? If so, where and price? Que: If I were to bring in my own stroller, how do I check that in? Put it compartment above passenger seats? Any other advices will be helpful. This is my first trip overseas with my child. Thank you..

  18. HIS mother had hoped that her lover would become his stepfather and help to raise him after her marriage ended. Instead, her boyfriend became jealous of the toddler because he felt she cared more for her son than him. As they argued frequently, his temper became worse and he grew more impatient with the boy. On the day Muhammad Izzul Salihin Muhammad Farzid turned 3 on 14 Jan last year, tragedy struck. MISSED: In this file picture, Mr Muhammad Farzid shows a photo of his son as a baby in his wallet. TNP FILE PICTURES The boyfriend bashed him so brutally that the toddler became brain-dead and died in hospital four days later. Firdaus Abdullah, 27, was yesterday jailed for seven years and given 12 strokes of the cane after a nine-day trial. He was convicted of causing grievous hurt and ill-treating the boy. The day before the tragedy, the couple had fought over Izzul. His mother, Madam Nadiyana Yacoub, shouted at Firdaus to leave her flat as she wanted to find a better stepfather for her son. This incensed Firdaus. The next day at about 7.30am, Madam Nadiyana went to the Syariah Court for her divorce proceedings, leaving Firdaus to look after Izzul. Soon after she left, the boy started crying because he wanted his mother. Firdaus tried to pacify him but to no avail. Frustrated by the incessant crying, Firdaus shouted at Izzul and made him stand in the bedroom and face the wall. When the boy ended up crying even louder, Firdaus snapped. He hit and punched Izzul's face and forehead again and again. He also hit the boy's chin with an upward punch. He then grabbed Izzul's face, lifted him and swung him in the air before slamming his head against the bedroom's door frame. He pulled down the boy's diapers, grabbed his penis, then shook, squeezed, pinched and pulled it violently. Firdaus then bit his genitals, right thigh and nose. He finally gave Izzul a hard slap on his back. By the time he was done, the boy's cries had become softer. Sensing something amiss, Firdaus went to ask his neighbours for help to call for an ambulance. The boy was rushed to KK Women's and Children's Hospital with multiple injuries. He underwent emergency surgery and was warded in the intensive care unit. But he died without waking four days later. Earlier attack The court also heard that Firdaus had also hit Izzul two days before the fatal attack. He was angry after the boy kept crying and refused to let Firdaus towel him dry after his shower. Firdaus clenched his fist and hit the boy on his head, causing him to fall on his buttocks. He hit Izzul so hard that his own knuckles became swollen. Firdaus had moved in with Madam Nadiyana in her rental flat at Jalan Minyak, off Chin Swee Road, in late 2007 and agreed to be Izzul's stepfather, the court was told. But he became jealous because he felt she was closer to her son. He complained about how she paid more attention to the boy and also about how she spent more time with him. They argued frequently over this and by December 2007, Firdaus had become bad-tempered, frustrated, stressed and impatient with the boy. He was originally charged with murder, but it was later reduced to one charge of causing grievous hurt and two charges of ill-treating a child. In his defence, he claimed that the boy had fallen down twice after the beatings. He also said that he had tried to resuscitate the boy after his fall. But Deputy Public Prosecutor Royce Wee said that even if Firdaus did try to save the boy, it was clearly 'too little, too late'. He added that his brutal and savage attacks had inflicted serious injuries on a young and defenceless child, causing him to die. Firdaus did not have a lawyer. He had nothing to say in his mitigation. Izzul's father, Mr Muhammad Farzid, 30, and grandmother were in court yesterday for the sentencing. His mother did not show up. Till today, Mr Muhammad Farzid still can't understand how Firdaus could have attacked his son so viciously. He told The New Paper that he had doted on his only child so much that he could not bear to scold or beat him when he misbehaved. He said it really hurt to see how badly he was beaten up, and that it's still painful just to think of him now. He carries a photo of Izzul in his wallet, and there isn't a day when he doesn't think of him. The photograph is all that he's left with now, he said. Mr Muhammad Farzid, who used to be a general worker at a mosque, visits his son's grave at the Choa Chu Kang Muslim Cemetery every month. He is no longer in touch with his ex-wife. Their marriage fell apart in 2007 and he moved out. He last saw his son a week before the tragedy when the boy accompanied his mother to court. Izzul was lively and cheerful and had called him 'daddy', he recalled. Mr Muhammad Farzid said the day Izzul was born, on 14 Jan, 2005, was the happiest day of his life. 'He's my first child and his birth symbolised my next generation,' he said. 'That day, I put down my work and rushed to the hospital to witness his birth. I was so happy.' Izzul was born two months' premature and had to be warded for three months. Exactly three years later, he was back at the same hospital, praying for his little boy to pull through. 'He should have been celebrating his third birthday instead, cutting his birthday cake and surrounded by people who love him,' said Mr Muhammad Farzid, tears welling up. 'I only managed to celebrate two birthdays with him, and then he was gone.' For causing grievous hurt, Firdaus could have been jailed seven years and caned. For ill-treating a child, he could have been jailed four years and fined $4,000. ******************************************************************************** *************************** Reading this story really make my blood boiled, this type of man also have... a innocent young life is lost just because of some lousy fellow.... Really feel sad for the young boy..

  20. Toddler falls from car... And is run over by it ONE family's plan to spend an evening out shopping was tragically cut short when their 21-month-old son fell out of the moving car and was run over by it. The accident took place at about 5.30pm on Saturday near Sungai Petani, Kedah, reported Berita Harian Malaysia. Young Mohd Firdaus Shahbuddin and his elder sister, Aishah, 5, were in the back seat of the Mitsubishi Galant as it was heading from the family home in Lunas to a shopping centre in Bakar Arang. Their father, Mr Shahbuddin Md Saad, 36, was driving and his wife, who was not named by the local media, was next to him in the front passenger seat. According to Lianhe Wanbao, the children were playing at the back when Aishah suddenly opened the car door. ROUNDING A BEND The car was rounding a bend by a school at that time. Aishah screamed that a back door was open. The mother turned around and tried to grab hold of her two children. But she was too late. Her son had tumbled out of the car onto the road. Panicking, the father could not stop the car in time. The toddler was run over by the family car. Mr Shahbuddin immediately stopped his car and rushed out. He saw his son lying on the ground and bleeding. A police source told Harian Metro that the car had run over the boy's head. The father was in such shock that he could not drive anymore. He managed to persuade passers-by to help him send his son to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital. But the boy could not be saved. Mohd Firdaus died within minutes and his body was sent for autopsy. At the hospital morgue, Mr Shahbuddin was too dazed and upset to speak to reporters. At a media conference on Sunday, a police spokesman said: 'The victim was believed to have fallen out when the door of the Mitsubishi Galant driven by the father opened as it was passing by a school. 'The boy was then run over by the rear wheel of the said vehicle.' He added that Kuala Muda district's traffic police are still investigating the case, in particular, how the back door ended up being opened during the journey. Media reports did not say if the children were belted up or in child safety seats in the car. I always checked is the Door Before I Move

  24. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...19.html?vgnmr=1 Maid jailed three months for sitting on boy's groin AN INDONESIAN maid who sat on the groin area of a naked two-year-old boy while she was naked from the waist down was jailed for three months on Friday. The 30-year-old domestic worker pleaded guilty last month to committing an obscene act at a condominium in Serangoon on June 22 this year. Deputy Public Prosecutor Crystal Ong had told the court that the maid did this to anger her employer who had taken away her mobile phone. The pony-tailed woman did not want to work any more after one and a half years and wanted to be sent home. That afternoon, the boy's 29-year-old mother was checking on him in his bedroom when she opened the door and found the semi-naked maid clad only in T-shirt, coming into contact with the victim's groin area. On seeing her employer, the maid immediately got up. Shocked, the child's mother called her husband, who came home and later took the maid to the agency. Pressing for a jail sentence, DPP Ong said the maid had abused her position and made use of the victim for her own heinous means. She had no regard for the victim whom she exploited as part of her plan. What she did was revolting and offensive, she added.
