Thiago Silva joins Chelsea. I’ll be following this player with interest as without doubt he is a classy defender but his age n injury record is against him. We shall see how he progresses.

Van de Beek supposed to join Real Madrid but I don't know what happened. This guy is supposedly a good box to box MF but United got so many MF don't know why they still want to buy? McTominay, Fred, Matic, Pogba, Fernandes, Lingaard, Mata, Pereira and as they normally play 4-3-3, only 3 MF needed.

I still hv doubts Messi will leave although this time he really TL. Trouble with him is that his pay is so high who can afford him and also there is dispute over the buy out clause which even if reduced to 200mil is a big stumbling block. In short, I believe he will stay.

U r right United needs a defender. In fact, most teams looking out for defenders.

Up to 1-2 seasons ago, strikers were almost always the most in demand players but times hv changed. Lack of quality defenders worldwide is an issue till Chelsea prefer to get a 35yr old defender. Koulibaly is supposedly the best defender available but his age and price tag is against him. After him, maybe Dayot Upamecano who just signed an extension with Leipzig and then can hardly name anyone else. Pool raised eyebrows when they paid 75mil for VVD but it has since proven to be an astute buy despite the hefty price tag.

ha ha ha... yes, not to mention that Pep decided he can't find defender better than fernandinho... before they bougth Ake... In fact, i wonder whether Ake or fernandinho will start at CB 😄

what happened to all the good defenders? Last time Italians were defender experts, even that Korean captain (what's his name...) when they co-hosted WC, was a very solid defender... Carra was played as midfielder for England before, as there were so many good CBs then...

now every decent player dowan to play defender anymore, it seems... 😆

All players will make mistakes. Just that the better ones make less and tend to be consistent with good focus and mental strength as skill wise, most of the top players are of the same standard.

Think the trouble is that the modern game expect the defenders to play our from the back which not many are capable of doing although admittedly there has been an improvement as work has been done on the training ground in this aspect. So the defenders not only have to win the ball n shut out attacks but also be expected to start their own team attacks by carrying the ball forward or long over the top passes.

I doubt even the great Italian defenders of the past can do this although some like Maldini and Nesta are technically competent but the hatchet man type like Chiellini and Gentile are more known for their defensive prowess which includes underhanded means as well.

No worries, Maguire is very strong in defence cos he is a "fighter" to the extend of going to courts if needs too.... :XD:

Not only that. Modern football rules protects  attacker alot. It make it even harder for hard tackering defender  to excel or play  their  game

yah, agree with that. Also dunno when it started that teams started playing out from the back, but now seems like everyone is doing it. I think should get a tall decent defensive midfielder to convert to CB, maybe can be to good effect. If there was a tall mescherano, i can imagine he would have become a top top CB... although it would be a waste of his talent not to be a midfielder...

i think it start from barc and spain , they start with the procession football stuff. keep passing non stop. even the defender got extremely good ball control passing and dribbling ability.

(but then holland got the total football vesion ages ago , not to mention the johan cruyff football philosophy all involve defender to have good ball skills i think )

and johan cruyff football philosophy got alot of influence on barc till today

Yes Cruyff started this tiki taka but that is more about keeping possession of the ball with the theory being the more possession u have, the more likely u will score. Opponents got impatient to get the ball back from Barca and in their anxiety, gaps will appear and Barca punished them. Opponents then became wiser by letting Barca have the ball and sat back to defend deep with the theory being, u can hv all the possession in the World but if u can't penetrate us, u won't score. N then it was Barca who became impatient and were vulnerable to counter attacking teams.

Other innovative coaches then moved to playing out from the back with the theory being to draw opponents out by tempting them to steal the ball from u but this meant gaps will appear as opponents come in search of the ball. Klopp then came with his pressing style which was high tempo and with the focus being quick ball retrieval when possession is lost. Currently, this pressing stall is used by most of the top teams till now tiki taka has become passe but new Barca Mgr Koeman has vowed to stick to their traditional way of playing.

on a side note, i hope Messi will stay and retire at Barcelona

otherwise it's like a bad messy divorce and will leave a sour end to his legacy
