in reference to the refugee boat which sank off greece that had an estimated 100+ children on board 😔

There's some suggestion that the greek coast guard just ignored it.

I think those comments missed the point. This was near north AM,  and involved American company. Nowhere near Greece.

The US coast guard regularly carry out rescue missions of ordinary fisherman and sailors without making the news. "Deadliest Catch" series also show.

Even if single out the EU issue on its own. The ground sentiments have soured and hardened greatly against illegal immigrants. Terrorism, crime, non integration,  welfare leeching, religious conflicts etc have seen the increasing rise of so called "far right" parties that oppose actively seeking out those boats because it actually worsens the problem.

Hard truth is, that sinking wasnt even an issue in the recent greek elections.

It may not be a nice thing to say but in reality this is what is happening.

No one can denied it that it's happening in this world.... :we-all-gonna-die:

If you & me went missing, nobodies cares but if Elon Musk or Warran Bettie missing, UN will organise a search. [sly]

In a simpler example, there are those who extend help willingly to strangers in other parts of the world, yet won't bother with own family members in need. No, not a cent or a finger lifted. Better die early somemore. Perhaps, familiarity really breeds contempt here.

Haiz. This is a very sad state of humanity.

Which country willing to feed and house these? Not talking about a meal or one, two days or weeks accommodation. Their own country can't be bothered. Will the citizens of the helping country be happy? Using tax payers money to help others when own country's poor and homeless are themselves in need?

Not easy ya. But easy to talk and point fingers. Is there a solution? Got, everyone stop giving birth.

Yada-ing. Dun be offended. I am also in many minds over this type of situation. Stay safe and keep well. Cheers

I think it's just the news coverage is all biased cos it's a good story.

Whereas, there's overall apathy to large numbers of people dying at sea from migrant boats vs 5 people who were almost certainly dead from the start.

Certainly sg has never accepted any migrant boats during the end of the vietnam war and we cannot afford to.
So I'm not saying it's wrong to reject migrant boats or just bo chap them. It's an unenviable problem.

Why do Asean care about rohingya welfare in myanmar? It's cos if all of them started fleeing genocide by boats, malaysia/indonesia will be swarmed with boat people.

if go western forum. the other side of the story is:

Why so many refugee young men bypass so many countrys just to go EU. But Ukranian refugee is mainly woman and children?

Their own young people cannot afford to get married , let alone have children, because housing is so crazy expensive job dual income also cannot survive. But they see millions of people just come, get free housing/hotels and welfare for whole family, but many not working cos unemployable or refuse to.

For years Sweden is called the rape capitol of the world due to immigration... this is a very VERY emotional issue. Not just in Sweden.

Terrorism and religious, cultural conflicts... why leave existing country, but insist to make new country become the same as the old one.

they see themselves losing their countrys, and far rights politicians are coming to fill the demnd, yup.... no easy answers.

im pretty sure if any party in singapore tried to impose what germanys Merkel did.... sure lose election.

This Sweden rape capital claim is repeated alot but fact check by Swedes themselves: https://www.thelocal.se/20170221/why-sweden-is-not-the-rape-capital-of-the-world

So main thing is coz Sweden is so woke it protect womens rights against all kinds of sexual misconduct that other countries dont define as rape, it became rape capital... lol

This is known in econs paradox as increased reporting does not constitute increased crime... in fact could lead to decrease, which in Sweden you can see happening from the stats since 2010

It's a emotional issue not because of definition of rape or woke etc. Its the perception of who... and stats does seem to support...  is over represented  in these crimes.

https://unherd.com/2021/04/swedens-migrant-rape-crisis/

These stats are similar in other EU too... but to be fair, it's not about immigrants,  but "uncontrolled" levels.

If it happened here... the reactions would be worse.

thrill-seekers and adventurers need an element of risk.

no risk = no thrill, no adventure

only issue is how far along the "risk" scale.

unfortunately society needs this type of people to drive innovation.

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/commentary/titanic-sub-rich-people-stupid-risks-oceangate-titan-3597376

"Are billionaires like this ultimately just vain or stupid? Or is reckless risk-taking in their DNA?

It turns out there is a good deal of research on why rich people take risks that encompasses a number of areas of psychology. One paper, published in Nature, investigated how the personalities of 1,125 people in Germany with a net wealth of at least US$1.08 million (so not everyone was “super rich”) differed from the rest of us.

The study nevertheless showed that people on these comparatively higher incomes were typically extroverts and, importantly, tolerant of risk. That means they might indeed be more drawn to thrill-seeking and risk-taking, in terms of adventuring and extreme sports."
