Went to molest Sealion 8.

Its BIG.

Seats very comfy.

Sound system seems better than SL7. Equaliser at least 5 band instead of the stingy 4 in the SL7.

Plastic used for cabin switches and windows look and feel very cheap compared to SL7.

Its BIG.

If you need a huge tall SUV. I think its very good value. The SL7 next to it looked like a low slung coupe from the SL8 seat.

Its BIG.

Which service centre you went to?

Surprised there's no Carbon Dioxide (C02) sensor built into the cabin of the Sealion 7 to bring in fresh air and purge the accumulation of a potential dangerous gas. At least BYD has acknowledged the problem in the video below from BYD Buddy.

Aim is to to keep cabin (indoor) CO2 below about 1,000 ppm for comfort and cognition; it’s a widely used benchmark for acceptable ventilation based on ASHRAE standard.

So what levels of CO2 are typical indoor and outdoor? The following is the CO2 parts per million (ppm) levels in what it typically means/feels like with key sources given in brackets.

  • around 400–450 : Typical outdoor air in 2025 (source: NOAA GML)
  • from 600–1,000 : Well‑ventilated indoors; most people feel fine (source: ASHRAE FAQ/Background)
  • from 1,000–1,500 : Stale/"sleepy" air; attention and decision‑making can dip (source: EHP 2012/2015; Harvard Healthy Buildings)
  • from 1,500–2,500 : Headaches, drowsiness more common; performance drops more clearly (source: EHP 2012; MDH; industry summaries)
  • from 2,500–5,000 : Sleepiness, reduced concentration; some experience palpitations (source: MDH; industry/occupational notes)
  • from 5,000 (8‑hour Time Weighted Average) : Regulatory workplace limit for an 8‑hour shift (source: NIOSH/OSHA)
  • from 30,000 (15‑min) : Maximum short‑term exposure limit; avoid unless controlled (source: NIOSH (STEL))‍
  • from 40,000 (4%) : Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) (source: NIOSH/OSHA)

Charles has found a work around, seems to be to activate the demister if one's feeling sleepy due to high levels of C02 in the cabin. Other option is switch to fan mode or just open the windows to purge the accumulated CO2.

At least the Sealion 8 still easy for ingress and egress. This one Denza B5 literally have to climb on board into cabin and jump down when exiting. It's massive. Phew!

There's an on-going discussion over at the Atto 2 thread on they type of cooling BYD employs for their traction battery. @Ake109 Have obtained a slide deck from BYD's training center on the Sealion 7 which clearly shows that the direct refrigerant method is used to cool the traction battery of the Sealion 7. Below is slide 75 of 144 which shows how the thermal management system's refrigerant loop is used to cool the cabin.

image.thumb.png.7a08e7ab456b7be91cab57aeebf1f8ea.png

On slide number 76 of 144, the same thermal management system shows how the refrigerant loop is extended to cool the traction battery.

image.thumb.png.7d0236ab9a33ea6263b0353d836598fa.png

The same refrigerant loop can be combined to cool both the cabin and traction battery at the same time as shown below in slide number 77 of 144.

For the Sealion 7, BYD is copying BMW's ge-kiang cost saving idea of utilizing the AC refrigerant loop to take care of everything, this includes cooling the traction battery. From BMW's perspective the idea is theoretically a touch of genius on paper. In practice it ended being a disaster for some BMW i3/i8 and 330e owners. It's now known affectionately as the BMW i3 black death.

The flaw in BMW's genius design is risk of the air conditioning compressor failure and contamination of the refrigerant loop. It's no longer possible to cool the traction battery and possibly turning the ride into a brick with a subsequent large repair bill.

Good thing is that BYD has an army of engineers and happens to manufacture the air conditioning compressor themselves, so it would be covered by their 6 year or 150,000 kms warranty (which ever expires first). Not sure what safeguards BYD has put in place to prevent total failure of the ride and large repair bill if the compressor fails. Would think a micron filter to protect the cold plates of the traction battery as a minimum. This is to prevent contamination of the battery refrigerant loop.

The thing is, when I pop the panels, can definitely see a glycol loop. Which is absent from the diagrams you pasted.

image.png.090352e3ffcc7c49eb48dc10b280a91a.png

You cant see in the pic but behind/under that glycol tank is a large metal plate which the a/c lines run thru to cool the glycol.

Also see this link:

https://www.bitauto.com/au/news/100192731736.html

It shows the whole widget with the cooling plate.
