Madarmour Neutral Newbie January 12, 2003 Share January 12, 2003 The last time I got my R1Rs, I bought them from the local distributor, SBT Tyres, 10 Kaki Bt Rd 1, #01-34/35. Tel: 6-846 1118. Got them at a discount during the Autosalon. Although, Leong Seng/Yap Bros may not stock them, they can indent for you, and probably at a cheaper price then what SBT can give you. After all, SBT need to charge you at list price to protect their agents. Just like Stamford, although they are the local distributors for Falken and Conti Tyres, you can get those tyres cheaper elsewhere. For Leong Seng, they quoted me about S$145 per piece... Hmmm...With the T1-S even more expensive than the SO3s (assume SO3s are around S$130 per piece), I'm actually having second thoughts?? And it looks as if the tyre is slightly deflated already...Hope it can last till tomorrow... Any idea what time Leong Seng in Ubi opens? Went down during lunch time and picked up a set of Toyo Proxies T1-S for about S$138 per piece from Yap Bros!! Still running in the tyres (only 70km, thus far), but initial impressions as follows (mainly in the dry, but with light rain at night): Strengths: 1) Extremely quiet - Hardly any road noise except for a slight humming sound during cruising. Especially in MSCPs, it is virtually noiseless compared to the Kumhos!! The Kumhos used to protest loudly when I do a sharp turn, but these seem to utter nothing at all!! Honestly, they seem pretty on par with my earlier AspecDBs. However, I've yet to run them in and time will tell... 2) Comfortable - Believe it or not, I found it (at the same tyre pressure) tons more comfortable than the Kumhos and even the AspecDBs?? It doesn't feel like a performance tyre at all. Somehow, the ride feels way softer... 3) Grip - Not really tested yet, as awaiting the dots to get scrubbed in first. But I did do an intermediate launch, where it didn't feel like it was losing grip at all, and dared me to push it more... Weaknesses: 1) Not as Communicative: Having driven the Kumhos for a while, where I'm accustomed to feeling every nook and cranny on the road, the Toyos don't leave me the same kinda feeling of control. Like other reviewers have found, it fails to inspire initial confidence, but simply requires the driver to trust the tyres more, especially with its passive nature...Still, I guess it'll take some experimentation and getting used to, before I can share similar sentiments... Especially braking, where I could feel my previous Kumhos forcing a slower initial stop, but harder stop at the end, primarily due to its firmer ride. With the Toyos, I can't really feel the grip offered as well?? It actually stops faster, but its just simply that the driver can't feel the road jarring in as much. Need to get familiar with its new characteristics, otherwise I may end up misjudging stop-lines... Hmmm...Maybe I need to pump more Nitrogen into moi tyres for the added feel... 2) The car does feel slightly draggier than the Kumhos, although it may be because of its added grip. It sometimes need between 200-300km for proper scrubbing so reserve your judgement for the tyre later. It can only improve. About the noise or rather lack of, I found the same with the R1R. I believe it's due to it being of a softer compound. Ride was surprisingly comfortable due to the same reason. Of course don't expect it to last as long as the Kumhos! You'll notice, after properly scrubbed, that it hardly make any noise at the same cornering speed when the kumhos begin to screech. That increased drag part is unfortunately true......watch out for the fuel consumption! Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Earlier, I had to really step on the brakes to stop the car - which has gotten me sloghtly worried. In any case, it did improve during my drive home tonight... It has accumulated about 170km. I'm running stock PSI (recommended by Nissan) at 32psi front (I think) and 30psi rears, and it still feels a tad soft. Whilst it should provide firmer handling, does it impact braking performance at all?? Would it give the illusion of greater grip?? Madarmour Neutral Newbie January 28, 2003 Share January 28, 2003 I think for us, or at least me, pressure is used more for ride comfort adjustment rather than handling tuning. However, a lower pressure will lead to an improved grip and vice versa. If your rear tyres has a higher pressure than the front, at the limit of traction, the rear wheels will give way first. That will kind of give you an oversteering effect. If the front pressure is higher you may increase the understeering characteristics of the FWD car. Don't ask me about the figures and what's the difference in pressure becos I don't know! My advise is to follow your manual. If they say front 32 and rear 30 psi, your can increase the pressures to, say, 34 and 32 respectively and test the ride comfort. If you have the time and place to test, then you can check out the handling aspect of pressure tuning. Just my $0.02. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Koolaba 1st Gear January 28, 2003 Share January 28, 2003 I'm using 33PSI for e front n 31PSI for e rear. It still feels soft on my ride, probably due to my "semi-retiring" shocks. Wymun Neutral Newbie January 28, 2003 Share January 28, 2003 Problem is that with my earlier Kumhos 712, the ride was much firmer. With the Toyos, it seems that I'm riding on comforty tyres!! Especially taking bends at relatively high speeds, the car feels as if it rolls more on the Toyos...?? So perhaps I should firm up my suspension, which wouldn't feel as bad now with the added softness c.f. with what I would have felt on my harder Kumhos... I had thought alignment only necessary when steering wheel vibrates at high speeds?? Did my alignment about 3 months back, having driven the Kumhos for a while... Yeah, will try that as a first tier of troubleshooting....Perhaps I should dial in some negative camber... Thanks for the advice... I actually got a backache (compression) just by driving on expressways after a week!! Eventually I reverted to Monroes...Guess getting old liao... So I was thinking, that with the softer Toyo T1-S, it may even out...
