Regarding driving while sleepy

my personal experience to share:

 

had a little accident with a kerb at ~60km/h while driving to my parents place.

i was feeling sleepy throughout the whole journey, while driving on right lane with no cars around.

there was a slight bend, my mind switched off momentarily and the next thing i knew, BANG!.

 

i was jolted wide awake, and when i reached parent's place, i inspected the right side of the car and the rims were badly scratched.

luckily i was alone and i didnt bang against any other car or persons

 

at the impact, my right ear was jarred and my right arm felt slightly numb. heh

 

moral of the story: sleepy drivers should either stop driving for awhile and rest or stay away from the road.

 

I had an Ex-colleague who was killed by a sleeping driver few years back!

 

He stopped his scooter at the red light (few blocks away from his house), waiting for it to turn green. Suddenly a van mowed him down!

 

He died on the spot, leaving behind a young widow and two toddlers!

 

The van driver was jolted out of his sleep, and cried at the scene, saying that he was working night shift the night before and OT. But it was no remedy!

yup... while driving on the road, must be responsible for ur actions. it will affect not juz the fellow roadusers but their family as well.

 

when something happen, its no point saying sorrie and being remorseful. the wrong has aldy been done... too late.

very true, thats why looking back, im very lucky that i didnt hit anybody/anything except for the kerb.

i think car makers should come up with a device that check if a person is sleepy... i think VW or Volvo... it's a European car definately has come up with such device in their future models.... but not many Singaporeans can afford these cars....

I often felt tired as I am driving so long on the road, but my "training" from my NSF days as a mortar driver serves me well. Driving after 3 days of field training at 50km/h on expressways with FBO is no joke!

What I always do.. wind down the windows and blast radio.. it works for me. If you have a CD you like, play it and just KTV in your car.

What my friends in US did during long drives, practise lane changing occasionally and overtaking other vehicles.

One experience I will never forget...

 

When I was studying in Canada, I drove my Civic from London Ontario to a town near Toronto early morning...drive is about 2 hrs. The way there was ok but on the way back, I feel asleep!...Damn! I woke up to find myself driving towards the railings so I quickly countersteered but I guess I steered too much, the car lost control and went down into a ditch. The ditch is about 2m in depth. At that time, I was really fully awake and panicking.

 

The engine was still running so I drove the car up the ditch and parked it at the side. Car body was moderately damaged but most of the damage was from the undercarriage. In the end, the car had to be towed back. After inspection by insurance company, it was writen off coz undercarriage was beyond repair.

 

Only consolation was that insurance paid me back $10.5K but I only paid $10k for the car. In the end, bought an Accord instead for $6K.

 

It's true, u always think u can tahan to your destination but sometimes juz cannot control and will close the eyes.

 

 

My friend had a similar experience, driving from Ottawa to Toronto at midnight. Whole car of 4 passengers fell asleep at Kingston area. Car went into center ditch and flipped over. Lucky no injuries but car total lost. Good thing is that the car is some tough American model. One strange sidenote, according to my friend, some ppl actually stopped, took some photos and drove off, but they did not offered help.

 

Yea, driving while sleepy is dangerous. Sometimes could just fell alsleep without knowing. Experience that last time in army after few days in the field.

When I'm sleepy... I'll pull over... walk for awhile.... then continue the journey.... if u are very sleepy... try doing jumping jacks....

I hit the expressway barrier at 110Kmph, sleeping at the wheel, car totally bashed up.

But my life was changed. So, if you are sleepy, take the small roads, dont take expressways. It might take longer, but you will stay awake and trust me, no sweets, fresh air or anything can keep you awake, if you are really sleepy.

Some years back I had a similar experience. I was still riding my Aprilia Bike, I was going home at about 1am after a long shift. Travelling from Clementi towards Alexander. I was turning right to the AYE when my mind doze off for about 15 sec. Than I felt my bike wobble & when I open my eyes I am heading for the curb. I tried to maintain my balance but fail & I skidded. Luckily no car behind me. Had a painful lesson. Now when ever I am sleepy when driving, I would tune up my radio keep me awake.

There is a citroen that has this feature. It has sensor at the front to detect straight lines. once you start skewing away from the lines, the your chair will start shaking to wake u up.
