  5. NIMBY Version 3.0 [shakehead] From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1260600/1/.html Petition against setting up of childcare centre at rooftop garden By Lip Kwok Wai | Posted: 17 March 2013 2214 hrs Ow Bin Bing SINGAPORE: Some Punggol residents are petitioning against the set-up of a childcare centre at the rooftop garden of a multi-storey carpark. A closed-door dialogue session was held with residents on Sunday. It's understood that officers from the HDB and the Social and Family Development Ministry were also present. Some residents told Channel NewsAsia they were informed about the plans to set up the centre at Block 180 Edgefield Plains, last week. Some were concerned about the safety of the children, adding that there's already a childcare centre within the vicinity. Others felt that doing so goes against the government's push to allocate more green spaces within housing estates. Still, there were residents who felt the rooftop garden has been under-utilised and can be put to better use. One resident said she's garnered about 20 to 30 signatures for the petition. Ow Bin Bing said: "If the small kids - two months old baby to seven years small kids, if anything happened, how can they run for their life? Let's say if there was a fire or anything, I have been teaching for 27 years, I know the small kids are very active, if anything were to happen, who will be responsible for their safety?" When contacted, MP for the area Penny Low said there are plans to build more childcare centres in Punggol. She said some locations are suitable, while others are not. And added that ground consultations and innovative use of space are needed, to make sure residents' needs are met. - CNA/ck
  6. ST Jul 15, 2011 Jump in applications for childcare subsidies By Judith Tan THE number of applications for subsidies for kindergarten and childcare fees has gone through the roof since the income ceiling for eligibility was raised. For the Kindergarten Financial Assistance Scheme (KiFAS), the number of applicants has swelled by 163 per cent, growing from 469 in April last year to 1,233 in April this year. Figures for the Centre-based Financial Assistance Scheme for Childcare (CFAC) are less dramatic but applications have still increased by a third, from 608 to 808 over the period. Since April, families with a monthly household income of up to $3,500 have been eligible to apply for assistance under the two schemes. The previous ceiling was $1,800. With the higher ceiling, 24,000 children from lower-income families now benefit from the schemes. This is double the previous figure. Among them are the Ong twins, aged five, who attend the Big Apple Child Care & Development Centre in Tampines. Their father Tony Ong earns $1,800 a month as a technician while their mother Mary brings home $1,000 as an office assistant, so previously the two girls were not eligible to receive subsidies for their childcare fees.
  7. Sian, yesterday received a note from my kid's childcare centre that they are going to raise their fee by $50 in August and next January by another $50. This has been almost annually, yearly affair and the explanation is standard lame, "due to the raising cost........" Nowaday, seem like when the Gov raise the child subsidy to childcare centre, the childcare centre will followed suit instantly, so in the end, parents are basically paying the same and no sign of improvement in food quality, lessons and every cents really counts for them. They are still afterall talking about being an educator but still a commercial institution and very profit driven in the end! My kid's centre is not those famous one. Can I ask if the quality of education/food either at PAP or NTUC centre on par with private centre to make a similar comparision? I may have consider to change if my kid is not in K2 this year.
  8. Feb 21, 2011 Cut the costs of quality childcare I REFER to last Thursday's report ("More help urged for women caregivers") in which the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware) urged the Government to beef up the quality of childcare centres. However, beyond just the quality, more effort must be made to reduce the rapidly escalating cost of childcare. Currently, quality childcare costs have surpassed the cost of university tuition. This is extremely worrying as it makes it hard for parents to save for essentials like university education and health care. Affordable childcare is a necessary requirement for working parents, not a luxury. As Singaporeans tend to have children when they are much older, their parents might not be able to provide free childcare for them and maids are getting increasingly expensive even for middle-income families. In France, the childcare system is extensive and covers everyone. The model is based on the idea that caring for the next generation should be a shared responsibility of the state and parents. The French do not rely on maids to bring up the children. This being the case, the French are willing to be taxed for quality childcare. To ensure that all strata of society can afford childcare, parents pay on a sliding scale based on household income and residential address. It is unsustainable to allow our childcare costs to continue to escalate faster than university tuition costs. Hopefully, the French model, though not without its flaws, provides us with ideas on how to move forward. Laurelle He (Ms) Another one who simply wants the gahmen to solve their problems for them. She willing to pay tax same rate as in France? Raise problem but got no solution to offer. Really dislike this type of people. Didn't she know that having and raising kids is the PARENTS' responsibility and not the gahmen's?

  11. childcare fees increased from 345 to 375. u think is fair? 2% increase for 345 should be roughly 7 dollars rite?
  12. Just received childcare centre letter stating that they are increasing our fee due to the GST & etc... Thou it has increased by S$20 & this is quite reasonable, but for my case, will be S$690 for both my children. We have used up our CDA on March2008 & thus, we have to pay by cash... With our miserable pay, we are facing financial problem. We are currently looking for childcare centre located @ AMK Ave 10 or nearby. Hoping that the fee there will be much more cheaper. (Don't think about getting a maid cos I don't really trust them after the abusing case) Honestly speaking, most of the childcare centre services more or less are the same. Only that are there any homeworks or spelling given. Ours don't have at all. So, I do not know what's my kids standard. My K1 doesn't know how to spell "Hand" "Leg", etc at this moment. So this survey might help us a little.. If possible, appreciate if you able to state the location of the childcare centre.
