  1. Indeed a touching story. Read on. Boy, 8, youngest to climb Old Man of Hoy whilst fundraising for terminally ill mother https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/06/09/boy-8-youngest-climb-old-man-hoy/ An eight-year-old boy has become the youngest climber to scale the 450ft high sea stack the Old Man of Hoy. Edward Mills, from Dunnet, Caithness, completed the challenging climb to raise money for charity Climbers Against Cancer as his mother, Bekki Christian, has terminal breast cancer. The family, who are originally from Stroud, Gloucestershire, had believed Bekki, 38, might not live long enough to see her son take on the sea stack off the coast of Orkney. But she watched from a boat as he reached the top on Friday. She said: "I am so proud of him. Proud of the way that he focused on just getting his head down and doing it. "Full of admiration for him as I know he will look around and take in the view, he loves the sensation of being up high. "He will be able to treasure the memory forever. And I am grateful to him, wanting to see him do this has given me purpose over the last few months as my health has declined and I was told in February that I wouldn't be here to see it. "I know that he is doing it for me. That feels really so very special." Edward takes the title of youngest climber to scale the stack from Ollie Buckle of Flax Bourton near Bristol, who was 10 when he made it to the top in 2016. The eight-year-old had raised more than £22,000 by Sunday morning, more than double his original target of £10,000. He said: "My mum taught us to love the outdoors, so she will be with us wherever we go. "When I climb I don't think about anything else. "When my arms ache and my fingers are red I like to eat fish and chips to fill me up after climbing. "I feel very pleased with what I have achieved. I think my mum is very proud." Edward did the climb alongside Ben West and Cailean Harker, elite climbers from Bristol. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/edwardandtheoldman

Sorry for misleading title Chinese boy, 11, who lost legs in car accident, just fails in attempt to climb sacred mountain with his hands http://m.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2018383/chinese-boy-11-who-lost-legs-car-accident-just-fails-attempt Chinese boy Gao Zhiyu, 11, climbed 900 metres up Mount Lao, in China’s eastern Shandong province, before having to stop because of severe blister. Photo: SCMP Pictures. A Chinese boy of 11 who lost his legs in a car accident has just failed in his attempt to climb to the top of a more than 1,100 metre-high sacred mountain – just using his arms and hands, mainland media reports. Gao Zhiyu had been trying to reach the summit of Mount Lao, the birthplace of Taoism, in Qingdao, on the coast of the Shandong Peninsula, Qingdao Evening News reported. He managed to reach a height of 900 metres – using wooden boxes held in his hands as “shoes” as he climbed the route made of stone steps – before giving up his attempt because of severe blisters on his hands. “If I was given more time, I could slowly climb to the summit ... next time, I must make it to the top,” Gao, from Qingdao, was quoted by the newspaper as saying. He was accompanied on his first attempt at climbing a mountain by Chen Zhou, a man who also lost both his legs in an accident. Chen has walked to more than 700 cities on the mainland on his hands. The self-help lecturer has also climbed to the top of more than 100 mountains, including Mount Tai and Mount Huang. Chen said he had felt obliged to try to give Gao a little support when he heard about his planned climb up the mountain. He said it was a shame that Gao did not make it to the summit. “I don’t think he is trying to conquer nature, nor other people. All the challenges he takes on are just to conquer his own fears about his limitations,” he said. Bad weather during their climb, including a thunderstorm and heavy rain, had make their attempt very difficult, the report said. The steps up the mountain were also steep and winding, and became slippery from the rain. After they had reached a height of 500 metres the climbers both needed to take a rest after almost every turn. The two began their climb at 9.30am on Saturday, but by 3.30pm Gao had to admit defeat because of the severe blisters on his hands.

ST Apr 8, 2011 Adventurer Khoo Swee Chiow to climb Everest again By Neo Wen Tong ADVENTURER Khoo Swee Chiow is at it again. He will be attempting to climb Mount Everest for the third time, as part of a eight-mountain expedition in collaboration with AirAsia X, the Malaysian based long-haul, low fare affiliate of AirAsia. The expedition, Altitude X, will see Mr Khoo scaling eight of the highest peaks in AirAsia X's network - Mount Everest in China, Ben Nevis, Scotland, Mont Blanc, Western Europe, Mount Damavand in Iran, Mount Fuji in Japan, Hallasan in South Korea, Yushan in Taiwan, and Mount Cook in New Zealand. Other than the mountains in Scotland, South Korea and New Zealand, Mr Khoo is no stranger to the rest. He will be leaving Singapore on Friday for Chengdu, where he will then travel to Tibet and start the expedition by - once again - scaling the highest peak in the world. The expedition is planned to take until December to complete. Mr Khoo first scaled Mount Everest in 1998, and the second in 2006. He will be the first person in South-east Asia to scale it thrice. Said the 47-year-old: 'If possible, I'd love to climb Mount Everest again when I'm 50, 60 or even 70, if health permits.'
